Members of Mortgage Victims' Platform (PAH), celebrate after learning an eviction was stopped in Navarra, northern Spain

(ANSAmed) - MADRID - Evictions in Spain are continuing to cause suicides as the problem is growing in a country where half a million families can't pay mortgage loans or rents due to the economic crisis. On Sunday afternoon a woman jumped off a window on the third floor of her apartment in Penafiel, a town 180 km north of Madrid - the sixth suicide over an eviction in the last two months.

The woman, 62, had reportedly received the order to leave her apartment after she had failed to pay rent for several months. When a group of youths who were in a bar rushed to help her she was already dead.

On November 28, a 59-year-old man committed suicide in Santesteban (he had not paid 4,200 euros worth of rent); on November 9 a former city councilor took his life as well as 53-year-old in Granada on October 25. Also in October another two people in Valencia committed suicide as they were being evicted from their apartments while a woman in Madrid took her life right after receiving the order to leave her home.
