A multi-billion dollar mix-use development broke ground in the Otay Ranch area of Chula Vista Thursday.

The Millenia project is expected to include one or two hotels, retail space and office parks along with six parks, an elementary school, a fire station and a library south of Otay Ranch Town Center.
The first phase will focus on a small percentage of the area near the southeast corner of Birch Road and the South Bay Expressway.
Two projects announced Thursday were a 270-unit apartment complex and another condo project bringing in 215 units. These may be available in late 2014.
The development would equate to 80 blocks in downtown San Diego broken up into several "districts" of work, shop and live.
“The project has something for everybody. You're going to either work here or you'll come to enjoy the shopping and the dining opportunities, you'll come maybe to watch a movie in the park, or maybe you're just one of those people that wants to live in a place where you can walk or bike instead of drive your car and we’ll have it all here in Millenia,” said Todd Galarneau, Senior VP of Land Development.
Galarneau estimated the development would generate 9,000 jobs on top of construction jobs.
The Millenia project has been 10 years in the making.
