Robin Rieger GLASSBORO (CBS 3) ― A student at Rowan University died after a brutal assault on campus during the school's homecoming weekend. Police released a sketch of one suspect involved in the incident and are seeking help from the public.

Police said 19-year-old Donald Farrell was walking with several students on the Glassboro campus at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday night when he was approached by a group of approximately five males on Old Heston Road near the Triad Apartments.

The group apparently asked Farrell, a sophomore from Boonton, N.J., about a party in the area, then beat and stabbed him, police said.

The suspects robbed the student of his wallet and cell phone before fleeing the scene.

Farrell was rushed to Cooper University Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He died from his injuries Sunday afternoon.

The victim's grief-stricken friends said Farrell was well liked.

"He was always smiling, joking around like a real positive kid, just the kind that's enjoyable to be around," said Sean Dorney.

"That's the tragedy in the whole thing. It appears to be so random and that's what really shocked everyone," said Rowan University Public Safety Director Timothy Michener.

Others though said they are not surprised because this was the fifth assault on a Rowan University student this semester.

"People get jumped. We get notices about that all the time," said an unidentified student.

Public safety officials on campus believe the suspects were not students at the school. However, Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton did not rule out the possibility that the suspect or the group of students he was with may be students at the school.

"Every time we have something like this we accept it as an affront, an assault on all of our campus," said Michener. "These were outsiders that came to campus for the sole purpose of committing a crime against one of our students."

Investigators are looking over surveillance tape from a convenience store that the victim entered prior to the attack.

Police described one of two assailants as a black male in his early 20s, about 5' 10" to 6" tall, with a thin build, medium skin tone, slightly scruffy facial hair and some acne scars. He was wearing a red baseball cap over corn rolls and a hooded sweatshirt with a gray front and a red back. There was a British flag emblem on the front, left side of the hood.

Rowan students gathered at the campus gymnasium at about 4 p.m. Monday afternoon to discuss new security measures being taken at Rowan.
