'America' gains steam, tops Michael Moore film

Movie described as 'a juggernaut that is building'

Published: 23 hours ago Jerome R. Corsi About
Jerome R. Corsi, a Harvard Ph.D., is a WND senior staff reporter. He has authored many books, including No. 1 N.Y. Times best-sellers "The Obama Nation" and "Unfit for Command." Corsi's latest book is "Who Really Killed Kennedy?"

NEW YORK – This weekend, Dinesh D’Souza’s documentary film, “America: Imagine the World Without Her,” earned an estimated $2.4 million to surpass Michael Moore’s genre-defining film, “Roger & Me,” en route to becoming the 7th-highest grossing political documentary of all time.
“America” was up 31 percent on Friday (from its previous Friday box office), grossing an estimated $947,000 on Saturday in 1,105 movie theaters nationwide to place “America” at No. 12 overall in the domestic film marketplace.

Through Saturday, “America” had grossed a cumulative total of $8,267,980, achieving the unusual feat of becoming a film that grosses virtually as much in the second week of distribution as in the first, instead of dropping off some 30 to 40 percent as is typical in the film industry.

“‘America’ is a juggernaut that is building,” co-writer and co-producer of the film John Sullivan told WND when the box-office results became available on Sunday.

Controversy swirled last week after WND broke the story on Monday that the retail giant Costco had made a decision to pull D’Souza’s book “America: Imagine a World Without Her” on July 1, the day before D’Souza’s film was scheduled to open in movie theaters over the July 4 weekend.

The next day, on Tuesday, WND reported Costco gave in to pressure from irate customers and decided to reverse its decision, placing with the publisher Regnery a re-order for 25,000 copies to be delivered as soon as possible.

On Sunday, D’Souza’s book “America” was ranked the No. 1 bestselling book on Amazon.com, a rank the D’Souza book has maintained since the Costco controversy broke last week.

Dinesh D’Souza’s bestselling books are available at the WND Superstore

Order the sought-after “America” book from WND’s Superstore right now!
While Costco estimated that only some 20 stores nationwide still had copies of “America” that had not yet been returned, copies are scheduled to be in all Costco stores nationwide within two weeks.

In an appearance on Fox News this weekend on Mike Huckabee’s show, politically conservative Oscar-winning Jon Voight expressed his concern for the future of the United States, while endorsing D’Souza’s book “America” and encouraging the television audience to see the film by the same name:

    America

    America The Movie

    Synopsis

Someone once observed: "America is great because she is good; if she ever ceases to be good she will cease to be great." Today that notion of the essential goodness of America is under attack, replaced by another story in which theft and plunder are seen as the defining features of American history—from the theft of Native American and Mexican lands and the exploitation of African labor to a contemporary foreign policy said to be based on stealing oil and a capitalist system that robs people of their "fair share".

Our founding fathers warned us that, although the freedoms they gave us were hard fought, they could very easily be lost. America stands at a crossroads, and the way we understand our past will determine our future. America the movie takes 21st-century Americans into the future by first visiting our past.

Gerald Molen, the Academy-award winning producer of Schindler's List, and Dinesh D'Souza, the creator of 2016: Obama's America, invite you on a journey of discovery that will bring you face-to-face with the heroes who built America, in the times in which they lived, bled, and sacrificed in order to build a great nation: Christopher Columbus, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and others. You'll be there as Columbus sets foot on American soil, as bullets whiz by Washington's head, as Douglass demands that America live up to the promises of her Founding Fathers, and as Lincoln sacrifices thousands of lives, including his own, to right a great wrong of history.

We'll also meet their present-day critics, hear their stories, and then let you decide which America you believe in.

    Film Critics Hate 'America'

    Published: 7/12/2014 9:22 AM ET

By L. Brent Bozell III & Tim Graham

Dinesh D’Souza shocked the movie world in 2012 with his anti-Obama documentary "2016," which became the second highest-grossing documentary in U.S. movie history. On July 2, he unveiled his new documentary called "America: Imagine the World Without Her." It has already grossed $5 million in its first week.. One fictional competitor, the abortion-promoting comedy “Obvious Child,” barely grossed $2 million in its first month.
But there’s a more dramatic contrast. Film critics are supposed to judge art, but their liberal politics are smeared all over their reviews. Metacritic.com collects and analyzes movie reviews. “Obvious Child” drew a high Metacritic.com score of 75 (out of 100). For D’Souza’s “America,” it was a ridiculously low score of 14.
Then take the highest-grossing documentary in our history, Michael Moore’s 2004 hatchet job “Fahrenheit 911." Editor & Publisher magazine reported nine of ten newspaper movie critics recommended the film.
The Washington Post gushed over Moore’s prankumentary. "Its trajectory is guided with pinpoint accuracy," wrote Desson Thomson, and it "obviously skews facts to its own advantage, but that's what the game is all about. What counts is the emotional power of Moore's persuasion."
“Fahrenheit” was loaded with bizarre and unproven charges against Bush, most offensively suggesting the Bush family and Osama bin Laden’s family were in cahoots over 9-11. Moore concluded the film with a conspiracy theory: “In principle, the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects.” All of that was just fine.
But when it came to the new D’Souza film, the same newspaper’s Mark Jenkins suddenly found perceived fact-skewing and one-sidedness to be just awful. “‘America’ is less successful as a debate, since it isn’t one. D’Souza controls the conversation, and thus goes unchallenged when he tries to make real-world points with make-believe scenarios.”
Then there’s The New York Times. In 2004, Dana Stevens wrote that while the facts of “Fahrenheit 911" could be debated, ”it should first of all be appreciated as a high-spirited and unruly exercise in democratic self-expression.” As for D’Souza’s self-expression? The Times critics have yet to bother reviewing the movie.
The movie’s only questionable note is the egocentric turn at the end as D’Souza shows himself in handcuffs and notes his own prosecution for making $20,000 in straw donations in a U.S. Senate race in New York. D’Souza has a point about selective prosecution under Obama, but it loses its punch when the accuser has admitted his guilt.
But overall, D’Souza’s approach is far more serious and substantive than Michael Moore’s conspiratorial claptrap. Moore’s idea of a “debate” was mocking Bush’s golf game and reading “My Pet Goat” to schoolchildren when the news of 9-11 arrived, or showing Paul Wolfowitz as he combed down his hair with his own spit. D’Souza deals respectfully, even gently with radical leftists from Noam Chomsky to Ward Churchill to Michael Eric Dyson. Churchill, for example, thinks a nuclear strike on America might be justified.

D’Souza underlines their argument: “Today that notion of the essential goodness of America is under attack, replaced by another story in which theft and plunder are seen as the defining features of American history.” D’Souza argues that the “conquest ethic” is the global norm, and that America is unique in trying to depart from it for higher ideals. He includes a rousing clip at the end with Irish rock star Bono, who hails the United States as “a great idea.”

For those who’ve felt the leftist American-greed-and-imperialism narrative shoved down their throats, this movie is a welcome rebuttal. The fact that liberal film critics can’t stand watching it makes it only more attractive.

Google Misdirects Readers Searching for D’Souza’s “America” – Says It “Needs Time” to Fix Glitch

Posted by Jim Hoft on Sunday, July 13, 2014, 6:00 AM

America, Imagine the World Without Her
Dinesh D’Souza scores another home run in his latest critique of the far left in America.

But for some reason Google can’t seem to find the movie times on its search engine.
    Weird, huh?

America filmmakers shot off a letter to Google demanding the search engine correct problems that are hampering the ability for consumers to find out movie times to D’Souza’s latest documentary.
    Via The Hollywood Reporter:

The move comes on the heels of Costco allegedly removing the movie’s source material, Dinesh D’Souza’s book “America: Imagine a World Without Her,” from its store shelves.
Lawyers representing Dinesh D’Souza’s newest film, America, have fired off a letter to Google demanding that the search engine correct problems that they say are hampering the ability of consumers to figure out where the movie is playing.
The letter claims that Google has been confusing America with 2016: Obama’s America, which was D’Souza’s first movie and has been out of theaters for two years, while Lionsgate released America on July 2 and it is currently playing in about 1,100 theaters nationwide.
Google, according to the letter, has been “misdirecting many users who mistakenly believed the film was not playing in theaters. We understand this was brought to your attention for correction five days ago, yet the problem persists.”
The letter, obtained exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, was sent Monday to Google chief legal officer David Drummond and comes from AmericaFilm LLC.
In response to the letter, Google said it will “need time” to fix the glitch that caused the search engine error.
    The Times of India reported:

Google has said that they it would take some time to fix the confusion regarding the title of the movie ‘America’ in their Google search results.
Google recently responded to accusations that it has been dragging its heels for a week while failing to fix a search problem that has made it difficult for users to locate theaters playing America, the new movie from conservative author Dinesh D’Souza, the Hollywood Reporter reported.
The giant Internet firm’s spokesperson said that their systems have unfortunately confused the title of the movie America because it’s a common term but they have updated the Knowledge Graph, their database that stores this type of information, however, it will still take some time to display showtimes and other details for the
