US Arab group sues Rice, Rumsfeld over Lebanon evacuation

An Arab-American group sued top Bush administration officials, claiming it bungled the evacuation from Lebanon of US nationals, leaving them vulnerable to the Israeli military offensive.

In their suit against US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld filed in a Detroit, Michigan federal court, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) asked the court to order the government to stop shipping weapons to Israel as long as US citizens remain in danger inside Lebanon.

"At no time has President (George W.) Bush, Secretary of State Rice, or Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld called for a ceasefire in Lebanon," said ADC president Mary Rose Oakar.

"To the contrary, the Bush administration has encouraged the violence by sending an urgent shipment of bombs to Israel, giving that country the green light to continue in its indiscriminate bombing of Lebanon," Oakar said in a statement.

"This has placed innocent civilians, including thousands of US citizens, in harm's way and has resulted in injuring several US citizens in Lebanon."

The suit, filed by the ADC and 34 Lebanese-Americans who have either left Lebanon or are trying still to get out, charges the government with violating their constitutional rights to protection with the much-criticized, slow evacuation of US nationals, and by aiding Israel's attacks, which threaten to harm US nationals.

The suit asks for an emergency court order to stop the US sending more weapons to Israel as long as US citizens are in danger in Lebanon.

It also asks that the court order Rice and Rumsfeld to seek a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah militia to enable US nationals to flee Lebanon, and to make better efforts to help them depart the country.

This really makes my blood boil! The State department issued a warning about travelling to Lebanon, and these people went anyway. Then, when they get in trouble, due to their own bad decisions, they want us to bail them out. I'm sick and tired of people not taking responsibility for their own actions. It's the same when a guy goes mountain climbing, falls and breaks a leg, then we have to spend thousands of dollars to go rescue him. If people are going to engage in risky behavior, they should have to face the consequences on their own.

And watch, President Bush will say that they did a good job evacuating, (I agree), but then he will bow down to their wishes because that's all he knows how to do anymore is to bow down to whoever has a problem with us.

WE have to please everybody. That's the new Bush Policy in my mind.

Has George Bush been reading Jimmy Carter books or something ??

Oh, c'mon now -- that would give him credit for being able to read, tsk, tsk, tsk!!!

That's why he has to have staff give him "good reports" on the newspapers.

Hey Wavtek, You and I think alike! I always thought about mountain climbers, put themselves at risk, and when in trouble, they put others at risk!

Seriously, I really do not think our hyphenated citizens are as loyal and patriotic as our citizens who have roots going way back.

Now I am going to be really un-PC....after 911, I noticed everytime the news interviewed Arabs, they (Arabs), lost their temper so quickly, they were so defensive and demanding.....even now, when they are interviewed they act this way.

Then I heard Benjamin Netnatyu (sic) say the "Arabs are always inflamed about something."

Now these illegals that are here are becoming demanding......think about this....both are from HOT, sun beating down on head all day long, countries.....maybe this has something to do with it..... Crime rates always go up here when it's hot.

    New cause for fried brains.

I've been listning to some of the interviews from evacuees, especially those from Lebanon and it does make my blood boil as well. They were evacuated and that's all that counts. My sympathies are with VACATIONEERS......not those with dual-citizenships who are hyphenating their allegances and using whichever citizenship serves their purpose for the moment. Did ya get out? Job done. Don't complain.

Wonder how mad they would have been if they got billed for the evacuation like nomral.

What I find most amusing is this is another attempt of some "special interest" group trying to make up and enforce international policy.
I don't care what you call me, so long as you call me AMERICAN.
