Mexico says no signs of salmonella in any produce

MEXICO CITY, July 6 (Reuters) - Mexico said on Sunday there was no evidence that a salmonella outbreak in the United States came from Mexican produce, amid reports U.S. officials will probe jalapeno peppers grown south of the border.

"In Mexico there has been no salmonella outbreak in recent months, and definitely not of the type (of salmonella) being seen in the United States," Mexican agriculture ministry spokesman Marco Antonio Sifuentes told Reuters.

Sifuentes said Mexico has not been told of any U.S. plans to expand a probe into Mexican produce beginning on Monday, which was reported by CNN on Thursday. "Nobody has told us anything," Sifuentes said.

U.S. health officials are struggling to find the source of the outbreak.

Tomatoes continue to be the primary focus of the probe but officials have expanded the investigation to include produce commonly eaten with them like cilantro, jalapeno peppers, serrano peppers, scallions and bulb onions, CNN reported.

Mexico has not detected salmonella in any of these products, Sifuentes said.

There have been at least 943 reported cases of salmonella food poisoning nationwide since mid-April, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on its Web site. The FDA says at least 130 people have been hospitalized.

An FDA spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

U.S. inspectors are currently in the western Mexican state of Sinaloa taking samples at tomato farms to try to verify Mexican claims no salmonella is present there, Sifuentes said.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Salmonella Saintpaul, the strain involved in the outbreak, is rare. Typically, the CDC sees only about 400 cases of Saintpaul infections in humans each year.

Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, according to the FDA. (Reporting by Jason Lange; Editing by Eric Beech)

If the produce itself is not contaminated with salmonella at growing sites there is the possibility it becomes contaminated when illegal drugs are smuggled with the produce. Who knows where and under what conditions the packaged drugs were stored.

Customs officers found 805 wrapped packages of marijuana weighing more than 5,500 pounds hidden in numerous boxes of peppers, Bond said Friday. The truck also had boxes of cucumbers, jicama and husk tomatoes.

And we do not have 20-40 million illegal immigrants here either.

The thing that really bothers me is the fact that the tainting of our food may be happening intentionally.

Who can we really trust on this issue.I think that the country of origin stickers should be enacted asap and at least give people the chance to pick what they want to buy to feed themselves and thier families.

This really ticks me off that our government is full of cowards that piss them selves at the thought of mexico or china officials being up set with them.

Did any one see what king george said about insulting the chinese by not attending the opening ceremonies of the olympics?

I wonder if the chinese worried about the deaths caused by thier tainted pharmecuticals they shipped here that killed half a dozen Americans?

I wish that our spineless, traitorous, lying, cheating, back room amnesty and more guest worker dealing at a time when our country is loosing thousands of jobs per month government would grow a set of bollocks and start acting like some of the great leaders we have had in the past.

Could any one even 10 years ago even imagined the direction that our government would take us ?
We can't deport them all ? Just think of the fun we could have trying!

That's because they are waiting for it to cross the border.

Yea sure...this coming from a government official in a country ruled by drug cartles and where you cannot even turn on the faucet and get a drink of water because the water system is so polluted.

I would love it if just for once...just one time, Bush would take the side of the United States instead of some corrupt, foreign country who only sees the US as a dollar sign.

china and mexico are not our FRIENDS!
