LEWISTON, MAINE- A car plowed onto a sidewalk near Kennedy Park Thursday night and ran over a stroller with a baby boy inside.

Almost everyone at the scene assumed the worst. But after an evaluation at Central Maine Medical Center, the child was turned over to his parents without a bump, scratch or bruise.

The identities of those involved were not available late Thursday night.

Hours after the 7 p.m. incident, police were attempting to determine what caused the driver of the four-door Chrysler to drive onto the sidewalk.

It happened as the baby's parents were pushing the stroller near the fenced-in basketball courts, police said. The driver of the Chrysler had been parked at the curb and was leaving the area when the car went forward instead of backward.

The car knocked over the stroller, crushing it. Nearby, police Detective Roland Godbout and officer Thomas Murphy were sorting out a complaint at the skateboard park when they heard screams.

They found the parents of the baby removing the injured child from the stroller. The officers tended to the baby until paramedics arrived and took the child to CMMC.

When the stroller was struck, the basketball courts and skateboard park were jammed with people who ran to the scene of the crash. The result was a swarm of people at the edge of the park and into Park Street.

Several said they had not seen the car strike the stroller but heard the screams of the parents.
