One of the state’s leading economists forecast the jobless rate reaching 17 percent before it begins to decline.

The worse-case scenario is the jobless rate reaching 17 percent, said Keith Schwer, director of UNLV’s Business and Economic Research Center, who gave the most pessimistic estimate.

Americans have landed with a thud economically, so of course, with no job there is no money to waste on stuff like vacations, when food is needed on the table. It sounds like Vegas and Reno have put all their chips on the entertainment/gambling/resort industry, just as Florida relies much on tourism. And the heck with the "official numbers." There is a large segment of the work force not counted, like the sole businessman or the independent contractor that will not be eligible for unemployment when their business disappears. Friends in FLA tell me it is probably closer to 25 percent.

And how many illegal aliens are in the state taking jobs US citizens want? I hope Nevadans press Harry Reid on this issue during his re-election campaign.
