I-540 section could become toll road

I-540 section could become toll road
RALEIGH (AP) – The state Turnpike Authority would place toll booths on a portion of Interstate 540 under construction in a bill that the state House approved Tuesday.
The state now doesn’t permit tolls on existing roads such as I-540, an out*er beltway which ultimate*ly will pass through the suburbs around Raleigh. The bill would allow tolls to be charged on a segment in Wake and Durham counties stretching from I* 40 to N.C. Highway 55.
The toll revenues gener*ated would help pay solely for that segment’s con*struction or for a contigu*ous toll road. The authori*ty is already considering a proposed Triangle Park*way toll road in Research Tri*angle Park.
Placing a toll on the I-540 segment, expected to open next year, could make both toll projects fiscally stronger, ac*cording to an authority con*sultant. The stretch would connect the Triangle Parkway with the portion of I-540 yet to be built in western Wake C o u n t y.
The idea, approved by a vote of 93-14, now returns to the Senate, which approved a slightly different version of the bill last month.

O thought the gas taxes that they keep increasing was supposed to pay for the roads. These toll roads will be a slippery slope, we need to tell them to stop this and now.

I know I'm not in your state and I don't have any verification for my feelings concerning this but I have a strong sense that the SPP/N American Triad and the 'new' toll roads across the country are related.

We have had toll roads in oklahoma for as long as I can remember, they were only suppose to be temporary, they just keep on going up every year. One 19 mile section that goes from southeastern okla to the Paris Tx exit, has jumped from 5o cents to 1.75 in the past 6 months, folks this is just going to be the new way of paying taxes, we in Oklahoma last year voted down a gas tax of 5 cents,( how they had the nerve to think about taxing gasoline is beyond me), to build bridges, we were so proud of ourselves until the toll road tax was hiked! They are going to stick it to us any way they can if not in a clear tax rise then the underhanded way of raising everything else to get it!
Build the dam fence post haste!

Not only that but the plan is for all roads to be toll roads. Then you will be taxed per mile that you drive. An average person drives 12k miles a year multiply that say by .25 cents per mile. That's $3,000.00 a year.

They will track your driving habits with the wonderful RFID Stickers i.e. EasyPass or something similar.
