Some say voter ID bill a factor in news of 2008 school election complaints

AUSTIN – Irregularities in a 2008 South Texas school board election are causing suspicion to sprout around the Capitol, where a contentious war is about to be waged between Republicans and Democrats over a voter ID bill.

Rep. Chuck Hopson, chairman of the House's general investigative committee, said Friday that he plans to launch an immediate inquiry into whether complaints lodged during the school board election are legitimate or "possibly bogus claims of voter impersonation."

If they are legitimate, they deserve to be prosecuted by the proper authorities, Hopson, D-Jacksonville, said in a written statement. And if they are trumped-up examples to give credence for the need of a voter ID bill, then those shenanigans would deserve exposure also, he said.

At issue are about a dozen affidavits from observers and voters in the May 2008 Progresso Independent School District election in Hidalgo County.

Some are relatively minor complaints about election judges standing too close to voters. But several allege that two or three people were given a slate of candidates and $10 and then given someone else's voter registration card to cast a ballot.

The affidavits were similarly worded and authenticated by the same notary, raising some eyebrows. They were forwarded to the Texas Attorney General's office in August, and the Hidalgo County district attorney said Friday that he had no knowledge of them.

The attorney general's office, contacted late Friday, said it is investigating voter fraud complaints.

The records came to light only this week after Advocacy Inc., a group that works for equal access for the disabled, found them in a stack of documents they had requested from the attorney general on voting problems.

Rep. Rafael Anchia, D-Dallas, said that discovery of the records was suspicious because the Senate next week is debating the highly charged issue of whether Texans should be required to present a picture ID before they can vote.

Anchia, who has been tasked by the House with investigating the prevalence of voter fraud, said he learned of the documents Thursday, despite earlier requests for all attorney general documents relating to voter fraud.

"We're highly suspicious of these affidavits," Anchia said. "We wonder if they were going to be used in a Matlock-like moment," during the Senate debate – a sort of dramatic revelation when there has been no previous prosecution for voter impersonation in Texas.

I think disputing the need for this legislation is suspicious.

Another dirty Obama "Special Interest" group.

    I saw this on www.whathappenedtomyamerica.com

This is an article from an Amnesty group that is angry that Obama is not stopping work place raids after they (illegals) voted for him.

    Call to Action:
Communities must fight back against the
    FIRST WORKSITE RAID
    of the Obama Administration in
Washington state on 2/24/09Yesterday, 28 undocumented immigrants were chained and arrested in a factory in Bellingham, WA as part of ICE enforcement operations.Raids hurt our businesses, our communities, workers and immigrants. Raids victimize the very people that helped to bring change to the White House and elect President Obama. We showed up to the polls to vote for Obama. We heard his promises of change. We have seen the countless reports that Bush-era immigration enforcement tactics are both financially and humanely costly. And now, we are getting more of the same.In this time of economic hardship it is completely unacceptable for the Obama administration to be executing raids on our workers, businesses and communities - IT IS TIME HE HEARS

I totally agree!!! Do those who oppose this bill also protest against the SSA, state driver's license offices, passport agencies, and numerous other organizations for requiring photo ID's??? You even have to present a photo ID to pick up a package at UPS or FedEx! This is the ONLY fair alternative to guarantee voting integrity! Why don't those opposed to the bill channel their resources and efforts into helping those LEGAL CITIZENS who don't have photo ID's to obtain them instead!!! Is that simply too logical???
