I-65 crash kills one; five taken to hospital

The Courier-Journal

A stretch of northbound Interstate 65 in downtown Louisville was temporarily shut down for more than two hours this morning after a one-vehicle crash near Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

One man, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was ejected from a Ford Aerostar van that overturned on the highway around 10:30 a.m.

Witnesses told police the van was traveling at a high rate of speed when it tried to switch lanes to avoid a slowing vehicle near the exit ramp to I-64. But Alicia Smiley, a police spokeswoman, later said that speed was not a factor in the crash and that no charges were expected.

Lt. Doug Sweeney, head of the metro traffic unit, said five other passengers in the van were taken to University Hospital following the crash. The occupants in the van were all Hispanic males, but Sweeney said their names and hometowns were not available. The van had Mississippi license plates. Smiley said the injuries to the five men were not life-threatening.
