Rep. John Murtha, chairman of the House subcommittee on defense, has died at the age of 77, his family reports.

Update at 2:54 p.m. ET: The Vietnam veteran, a longtime hawk, was a key player on defense legislation and created a political stir during the Bush administration by coming out against the Iraq war.
