Salmonella investigation focuses on NC restaurant

July 11, 2008

RALEIGH, N.C. — Health investigators have converged on a Charlotte-area restaurant as a source of several salmonella-related illnesses.

Investigators are analyzing the facility's suppliers to find links to a national outbreak that has sickened more than 1,000 people.

Officials said Friday that North Carolina food protection experts took 42 samples from the restaurant, including a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and spices. By analyzing the food and patrons that mixed over a few-day period last month, investigators hope to identify specific links between the food and the bacteria.

None of the items taken from the unidentified restaurant came from North Carolina. Officials declined to further discuss their origins until tests are completed next week.

Six people in Charlotte's Mecklenburg County have confirmed cases of the salmonella subtype.
