French mayor girds for influx from Dec. 2012 Mayan 'apocalypse'

    06:48 PM

Two years from now, on Dec. 21, 2012, the world will end, assuming you believe the Mayan calendar. And, if you believe some of the believers, one of the only places to escape Armageddon is a tiny village in southwestern France, whose mayor is threatening to call out the army if New Age survivalists converge.

As The (London) Daily Telegraph explains, the farming village of Bugarach (pop. 189) sits beneath the highest mountain in the Corbières wine-growing region, which New Agers believe is an "alien garage" filled with extraterrestrials who will take a few humans with them at the end.

Already people are scouting Bugarach for signs of alien activity. While most mayors would envy his tourism troubles, Jean-Pierre Delord says "we risk having a flood from all the corners of the earth."

"This is no laughing matter," the mayor said. "If tomorrow 10,000 people turn up, as a village of 200 people we will not be able to cope. I have informed the regional authorities of our concerns and want the army to be at hand if necessary come December 2012."

He said that U.S. websites are selling excursions and that believers are organizing prayer and meditation workshops.

"Many come and pray on the mountainside. I've even seen one man doing some ritual totally nude up there," Delord said.

Why Bugarach? It was Jules Verne's inspiration for A Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind allegedly emerged after Stephen Spielberg visited the "magic mountain." (He used Devil's Tower in Wyoming.) Interest rekindled about 10 years ago when a local man wrote in to a UFO review.

"He claimed he had seen aliens and heard the humming of their spacecraft under the mountain," Delord said.

Does the Mayans' "long" calendar predict the apocalypse in two years? Read on.

In other UFO-related news today, New Zealand's military released thousands of files on alleged sightings of unidentified flying objects between 1952 and 2009.

The New Zealand Herald has the details.
