Mexican legislature to investigate ex-president's wealth

The lower house of Mexico's legislature, the Chamber of Deputies,on Monday agreed to set up a commission to investigate the finances of former President Vicente Fox, a legislator said.

"We have agreed to set up the commission," said Hector Larios, head of the ruling National Action Party in the lower house. Fox, president from 2000 to 2006, and the sitting president, Felipe Calderon, are all from the National Action Party.

Allegations of corruption emerged in Mexico when Quien magazine -- which focuses on the lavish lifestyles of Mexico's rich and famous people -- published a feature and some photographs of Fox's newly renovated mansion at the ranch he shares with his wife, Marta Sahagun, in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato.

Ricardo Monreal Avila, a senator from the left-wing Revolutionary Democratic Party, then sent a writ to the Attorney General's Office, accusing Fox of several wrongdoings including corruption and abuse of power.
