To draw a phrase from the late, great William F. Buckley Jr.’s words as he founded National Review, someone must stand athwart the federal ethanol program yelling, “Stop!â€

I was listening to a raido show and they were saying ethanol manufacturing uses tremendous amounts of water and causes alot of environmental damage as well.

I for one never thought any food source should be used for fuel as long as there's any place where poverty is present. Something like grain is too vunerable to weather and all sorts of things to be considered a viable source. Thats like saying the answer to Africa's starving population is to starve Americans instead. The way to fix Mexico's criminal element is to send them here. The way to fix child molestation is just make it legal.

Did they have one of their multi-million dollar studies to THINK through this issue? Or just jump in with both feet without a thought?

I watched a show about biofuels on the Discovery channel and the said that switchgrass produces much more fuel per acre than corn or sugar cane and it grows wild in the US.

Since it grows wild without fertilizer, mass quantities of water, etc., the government can't control it nor dole out subsidies to farmers at our expense. Therefore, they'll likely never support or allow it's development.

Which makes you pretty much believe they really don't want to fix the problem, or find any real answers.....

Between the Monsanto video I posted and this article, I got a feeling Monsanto lobbied for this program to increase their profit margin in their transgenetic corn. An extra bonus is that Monsanto corn is probably contaminating any local non-transgenetic corn, which will force even more farmers to buy corn seeds from Monsanto.

Monsanto: Corn That Glows In The Dark

[i]Getting farmers to use genetically-modified seeds has not been easy. Consumers are also wary of eating food that comes from these products. The EU and India actually have bans on the seeds.

But, with the rising need for alternative fuels and the shortage of corn to make ethanol the "non green" seed products are in demand. Funny how money makes people change their minds.

Monsanto (MON) said that its genetically-modified corn seed sold out this year. Farmers need more yield per acre and want to plant corn in soil that was previously ill-suited for the task.

Then, of course, there are the problems that global warming seems to be creating in the drought department. Having seeds that will grow in anything short of concrete can be very helpful.

India and the EU will change their minds on GM seed. They have to. The demand for food and alternative fuels is gaining too fast.

Monsanto may have been the ugly duckling of the agriculture industry, but that has changed.
