Chicago weekend shooting toll: 6 dead, 35 wounded

Six people were killed and at least 35 were wounded by gunfire in Chicago from Friday evening through Monday morning, police said.

The shootings bring the year's total to at least 1,871, according to an analysis of a Chicago Tribune database on city shootings.

That's an increase of more than 225 over last year and more than 370 over 2013, according to Tribune data.


The city has also seen more murders, according to a Tribune database on homicides. There were at least 307 slaying victims through Monday morning this year, 38 more than last year and 24 more than 2013.


All six of the men who died over the weekend in Chicago were killed on the West and South sides:


• Cory Fisher, 18, was shot in the head in Lawndale at 6:15 p.m. Friday; the shooting in the 3800 block of West Lexington also injured a 16-year-old. Fisher was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died less than 15 minutes after he was shot, authorities said.

• A 34-year-old man was found dead in a Garfield Ridge alley at 4:53 a.m. Saturday. The man, who has not yet been publicly identified, had been shot multiple times. Police found him dead in the 5200 block of South Menard Avenue.
• A 35-year-old man died at Mount Sinai Hospital after being shot in the chest and arm at 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the Brighton Park neighborhood, police said. The shooting in the 4000 block of South Albany Avenue also wounded a 26-year-old woman, who was grazed in the thigh.
• Raul Lagunas, 28, was killed in the Humboldt Park neighborhood at 6 a.m. Sunday, police said. Lagunas, who lived on the block where he was killed, was found shot in the neck and arm in the 1500 block of North Avers Avenue. He died on the scene.
• A 42-year-old man was driving in the South Austin neighborhood when he was shot and killed, police said. He was in the 1000 block of North Lamon Avenue at 8:35 p.m. Sunday when he was struck. He crashed into a parked car and died at the scene.
• A 30-year-old man was shot in Gage Park just minutes later, police said. He was found in the 2400 block of West 58th Street with gunshots to the abdomen, groin and shoulder. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The weekend’s oldest shooting victim was a 65-year-old woman who was grazed in the back by a bullet meant for someone else, police said. The shooting occurred Sunday afternoon in South Shore as the woman stood near on a corner in the 7000 block of South Merrill Avenue. At 2:25 p.m., someone fired shots at a nearby 21-year-old man, according to police. The man was hit in the abdomen and thighs. Both victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where the woman's condition was stabilized.
The only weekend shooting to occur outside the West and South sides happened in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side. A 40-year-old man was shot in the lower leg there at 2:55 a.m. Sunday, police said.
From Friday evening to Saturday morning, two people were killed and 10 were injured; from Saturday to Sunday morning, two were killed and 19 were wounded; and from Sunday to Monday morning, two were killed and six were wounded.
