Oregon veteran, 57, wins age discrimination suit

SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- A 57-year-old man starts work Monday in the Oregon secretary of state's audits division, on the orders of a judge.

Marion County Circuit Judge Dennis Graves sided with William Abel in three age discrimination suits he filed.

Abel first applied for a job in the office in 2000, and was turned down a dozen times in the next few years.

Graves said the hiring criteria used by the audits division seemed too subjective.

Abel is an Air Force veteran who has worked as a fiscal analyst for the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Secretary of State spokesman Don Hamilton says the office's hiring practices give equal preference to everyone, but the agency would be re-evaluating as a result of the lawsuit.

Well......since parents are having their kids and grandkids with them longer and longer.....getting displaced at middle-age with downsizing and jobs shipped overseas, at times using their retirement savings to get through, increased medical expenses at a time when problems are starting, cuts and more cuts with medicare and everything......they better darn realize we have alot of elderly and up-comming elderly that need to work too. It's enough to have to settle for teenage wages without being booted out for "age" long before retirement. Especially when by some unreal means we are supposed to put away 10-20-30 years of living expenses......some are lucky and can......others going week to week on basic necessities can't get the 6 mos. emergency savings going.......let alone the rest.
