A Peoria Heights restaurant owner facing bad check charges has left the country while out on bail, and authorities are not sure just how it happened.

And the alleged victims who say the man owes them thousands of dollars are wondering if they'll ever see their money.

Authorities say 27-year-old Kranthi Akula fled the country Thursday, a day after posting 10 percent of his $50,000 bond. He faces four criminal charges of deceptive practice for allegedly writing more than $36,000 in bad checks.

The Peoria County judge who set the bond ordered Akula to surrender his passport, but Akula failed to do so, and instead boarded a plane to Mumbai, India.
