(SPRINGFIELD) A constitutional amendment approved Tuesday could make Illinois the first state in the nation to lower its voting age to 17 without restrictions.

The Illinois House Elections and Campaign Reform Committee voted 5-3 to allow 17-year-olds to vote in both primary and general elections, according to a release from State Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie).

Eleven states allow 17-year-olds to vote in primaries if they will turn 18 by the general election. The Illinois law would allow 17-year-olds to vote without any such restrictions, the release said.
