JACKSON —Dozens of people rallied in downtown Jackson and marched to the Capitol Saturday to protest Confederate heritage month.

The called it the "not my heritage" rally.

A protester told WAPT "We're not OK with this," taking a stand against the Confederate flag and against Gov. Phil Bryant's declaration of the heritage month.

Although Bryant thinks Confederate heritage month is a way to remember some of the history in Mississippi and learn from it, protesters think there's another way to go about it.

"I believe we should do a Mississippi heritage month so we can celebrate the good things about this state. The people are so nice down here," said Los Angeles activist Nolan Hack.

Hack continued: "The food is amazing. There's so much great history about the music, white and black activists. Let's focus on that, not hate."

Kai Chambers also voiced concerns. "He's trying to turn Confederate heritage into a good thing, when it's not. It really shouldn't be celebrated, especially, we shouldn't celebrate owning people in the past. Nah, that's not good."

The NAACP started a petition calling for a Union army appreciation month.
