Madison — President Barack Obama's approval rating in Wisconsin dipped to 44% in a new poll, the lowest of his presidency.

The St. Norbert College Survey Center Poll, released Wednesday, shows his approval rating dropped to 44% from 50% in the fall and 60% from a year ago, shortly after his term began.

The approval rating for Congress was far lower at 14%. That was down dramatically from 39% in the spring but roughly equivalent of the 16% approval rating in the fall of 2008.

Thirty-eight percent say they think the country is headed in the right direction, the same as in the fall.

Feelings on economy
Also, a majority of Wisconsin residents surveyed in the poll say they think the national economy is either the same or better than a year ago.

The poll shows 42% think the economy is better while 23% think it is the same. Thirty-four percent think it's worse.

Opinions were mixed on how people felt about economic stimulus bills passed by Congress. Twenty-nine percent say they think the stimulus bills helped the economy, while 34% say they had no effect and another 34% say they think they hurt.

The telephone poll of 400 Wisconsin residents was done between March 23 and March 31, and it has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
