A 61-year-old man was killed on the Edens Expressway in Skokie Thursday night when a tire came off from a sport-utility vehicle and smashed through the windshield of his car.

In a separate incident a little more than two hours later, an 82-year-old man was killed in a crash on Chicago's Far Northwest Side.

On the Edens, Robert Maust was driving his 2007 Buick Lucerne in the southbound lanes about 8:30 p.m. at Golf Road when the front left tire of a northbound 1997 Nissan Pathfinder came off, Illinois State Police said.

The tire bounced over a concrete divider and slammed through Maust's windshield, hitting him in the head, state police said. Maust, 61, of the 5900 block of North Maplewood Avenue, Chicago, was pronounced dead at Rush North Shore Medical Center, Skokie, at 9:20 p.m.

Manuel Rios, 23, of north suburban Highwood, was ticketed for an equipment violation and driving without an insurance card. He was not hurt.

State police said he was also ticketed for driving on a suspended license after failing an emissions test for a vehicle. But they could not say if the Nissan was the vehicle that failed the state-mandated exam.

Separately, an 82-year-old man died after his vehicle crashed into a tree in the Wildwood neighborhood on Chicago's Far Northwest Side.

Robert Diehl was driving on the 6900 block of North Lehigh Avenue when the crash occurred at about 10:45 p.m.

Diehl, 82, of the 6800 block of North Wildwood Avenue, was pronounced dead at 11:11 p.m. at Resurrection Medical Center, a Cook County medical examiner's office spokesman said.

*Of course no mention as to whether or not this guy is an illegal alien. Since he was driving on a suspended license I wonder if that was fraudulently obtained in sanctuary Illinois.
