Democrats Score Lie of the Year for 2011

Lying in politics is as old as politics itself. In fact, it’s hard to find a politician these days that doesn’t lie to their constituents and others. But who are the biggest liars of them all?

In 2009 and 2010, the Republican Party was given the honors having come up with the biggest lies of the year. In this year’s contest, it was determined that the Democratic Party in general came up with the biggest lie of the year. Ironically, all three years, the biggest lie revolved around healthcare.

And this year’s #1 lie?

“Republicans voted to end Medicare.”

The Democrats purported this fabrication in response to the House Republicans voting to approve a budget that included an overhaul on Medicare proposed by Rep Paul Ryan (R-WI). Ryan’s proposal actually kept Medicare in place for all those currently enrolled and everyone ages 55-65. His proposal called for a privatization with government subsidies, but it did not end Medicare.

Since Ryan’s proposal which was included in the House budget, Democrats went on the attack with numerous falsehoods targeting Republicans. Among those falsehoods was the following commercial:

Other false accusations made by various Democrats and organizations supporting the Democrats were:

On March 31, 2011, Americans United for Change claimed that House Majority Leader Eric Canton was calling for the end of Social Security and Medicare.

On April 6, 2011, MoveOn.org posted that the House Republicans budget would abolish Medicare in ten years.

On April 18, 2011, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said that seniors will have to pay an additional $12,500 a year for health care because Republicans voted to end Medicare.

On May 17, 2011, The Agenda Project said that Ryan’s budget proposal would leave the county without Medicare.

On June 1, 2011, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee was at it again when they told Virginia voters that Rep Robert Hurt had voted to end Medicare and raise health care costs for seniors.

On June 6, 2011, Wisconsin State Rep Sandy Pasch (Dem) said that Ryan had promised to end health care for seniors.

On June 20, 2011, Sen Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the Republicans had a plan to end Medicare.

On July 8, 2011, Shelly Moore, a Democratic candidate for the state senate in Wisconsin’s 10th district said that Sen Sheila Harsdorf wanted to eliminate Medicare as we know it today.

On August 30, 2011, Vice President Joe Biden publicly stated that Rep Ryan’s proposal would end Medicare in ten years.

The list of Democratic statements concerning the Ryan proposal goes on and on and on and they have all been proven to be untrue, resulting in PolitiFact.com voting this as the #1 political lie for 2011.
