Mexicans refusing to pay electric bills

Villahermosa – Mexico's federally owned CFE electric utility reported accumulated losses of 2.28 billion pesos ($189 million) in the southeastern state of Tabasco, where roughly two-thirds of users have been refusing to pay for electricity.

The refusal to pay electric bills began in 1995 as a political protest by the leftist PRD party against a stolen gubernatorial election.

In recent years, however, non-PRD supporters have joined the boycott. Some because they think the rates are too high; others in retaliation for what they see as the role of CFE's management of hydroelectric dams in aggravating floods that devastated Tabasco in 2007.

"People don't pay for electricity because it's expensive," according to PRD state chairman Javier May.

At least 80,000 households here in Villahermosa, the state capital, are receiving electricity without paying for it.

CFE employees sent to PRD-governed rural communities in Tabasco to disconnect homes from the grid have been beaten by residents.

Tabasco Gov. Andres Grenier condemns PRD mayors and state lawmakers for encouraging the boycott by protecting non-payers from legal action by the CFE, while the Mexican government has rejected a proposal to wipe out past debts to the utility.

The CFE announced last year a special program allowing users whose accounts are delinquent to make up the arrears in installments.

Well then turn the power off to them. If you or I didn't pay the electric bill do you think the company would just leave it on?
