A Mesa helicopter builder has landed an Army contract worth nearly $200 million. The Arizona Republic reports MD Helicopters Inc. will initially build six helicopters to be used for training in Afghanistan.

The Army says as many as 54 aircraft would be manufactured at the company's Falcon Field Airport plant in Mesa over the life of the four-year contract.

MD officials say the contract will create jobs, but the company did not release any figures on just how many people will need to be hired.

The Republic reports MD is in discussions with the Boeing Co. on a contract to work together on the production of a light-attack/reconnaissance helicopter for the global market.
