Dallas, Los Angeles see largest increases in shoplifting as U.S. economy falters

Retail theft is up bigtime across the United States – but not necessarily in the places you might think.
According to a new report from the nonpartisan Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ), Los Angeles and Dallas saw the largest increases in retail theft during the first half of both 2022 and 2023.
Retail theft in Los Angeles was up 109 percent during these timeframes while Dallas saw a whopping 73 percent increase in shoplifting.
In 2020 when the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) "pandemic" was first being launched, shoplifting incidents across the United States fell dramatically in 24 of America's largest cities. This is because everything was shut down, and people were told to stay at home.
After the COVID sham started to fall apart, retail crime started to rebound. In the first half of 2023 compared to the first half of pre-"pandemic" 2019, incidents of retail theft were up 16 percent across America overall.
Compared to mid-year 2019, the two American cities that saw the biggest decreases in retail theft were St. Petersburg, Fla., at -78 percent and St. Paul, Minn., at -65 percent.
(Related: Earlier this year, outdoor goods retailer REI closed its last Portland location due to rampant theft.)
San Francisco, Seattle saw largest decreases in crime during first halves of 2022, 2023

It may come as a surprise to some, but the two cities that saw the largest decreases in retail crime during the first halves of both 2022 and 2023 were San Francisco and Seattle, which saw -35 percent and -31 percent decreases, respectively.

Across America as a whole, the median value of goods stolen during these time periods increased between 2019 and 2021, likely due to inflation. In 2019, the average shoplifting incident resulted in a loss of $75, while in 2021 it reached $100.
"Looking at 90 percent of incidents and excluding those in the top 10% in terms of value, the value of stolen goods in shoplifting incidents in 2021 was $756 or less, a $184 increase from 2019," CCJ reports.
As for more serious shoplifting incidents that count as felonies, these nearly doubled from the onset of the "pandemic" through now from eight percent to 16 percent.
More than 95 percent of shoplifting incidents in 2019, 2020 and 2021 across America involved one or two people, while 0.1 percent, or one out of every 1,000 incidents, involved more than six people.
At the same time, the percentage of cases lacking information on the number of people involved increased from 16 percent in 2019 to more than 25 percent in 2021. This could be due to the "protests" that erupted following the George Floyd psy-op, which essentially normalized retail theft.
More shoplifting incidents these days also involve violence compared to pre-"pandemic" levels. While store assaults were seven percent lower in the first half of 2023 compared to the first half of 2022, they were eight percent higher for the same time period compared to 2019 before anyone had ever even heard of COVID.
CCJ first started tracking all this almost immediately after COVID was unveiled on the world stage. The group highlights an increase in "smash and grab" incidents, which are all over the news these days as looters ransack grocery stores, high-end apparel stores, drug stores and whatever other businesses they can find to target.
In 2023, California apportioned $267 million to try to combat retail thefts. This past June, a similar effort was launched at the federal level as the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance held a hearing on rising rates of organized retail theft across America.
"The city-specific data included in this report are drawn from open-data sources from 24 cities that, over the past five years, have consistently reported specific shoplifting data," CCJ says about how it compiled all this data.
"Additional data come from the U.S. Justice Department's National Incident-Based Reporting Program (NIBRS).7 The NIBRS data include a sample of 3,812 local law enforcement agencies. The analyses examine the changing frequency of reported shoplifting, trends in other property offenses, changes in the value of stolen goods, offenses that co-occur with shoplifting and the number of people involved in each incident."

Grocery stores are LEAVING crime-ridden U.S. cities in droves, creating “food deserts”

    01/23/2024 // Ethan Huff // 1.9K Views

Times are getting so tough for many Americans that crime rates are through the roof, not to mention the politically motivated riots stemming from false flag incidents like George Floyd that continue to fuel rampant lawlessness. Consequently, America's inner cities are becoming "food deserts" as retailers hightail it out of them to protect their bottom line.
Take Boston, for instance. In the past several months, pharmacy chain Walgreens shut down four stores, prompting area residents and local officials to express "outrage" because they say companies like Walgreens have a civic duty to stay and service communities in need.
All across Massachusetts, in fact, retailers are closing up shop as they collectively lose $2 billion per year to theft.
The situation is much the same in San Francisco where some neighborhoods now lack a single grocery store. Area residents, if they want to eat, are having to travel great distances to other neighborhoods in order to buy food for their families.
In some cases, stores are trying to hide the reason why they are leaving. One excuse is that they are fleeing in order to "improve" the area by opening up land for new developments, but this is clearly not the case when simply looking at current trends.
(Related: Speaking of food deserts, Ukraine's farming sector, widely considered to be the "breadbasket of Europe," will not recover from the war for at least 20 years, according to a recent study.)
FBI data tweaking hides true crime rates in U.S. cities

Looking at the official crime data, it might not seem as though crime rates are anything other than ordinary. This is due to data tweaking that was implemented during the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) "pandemic" that effectively hides true crime rates until 2024 or even 2025.
Each U.S. city can still voluntarily report its true crime rates if it so chooses, but at least 30 percent of U.S. cities are opting for the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) data tweaking loophole, including San Francisco, which is choosing to hide its complete crime statistics until 2025.
When the true numbers remain hidden, it becomes easy for a city to claim that everything is a-okay. It is also easy to hide true crime rates when a city stops enforcing its laws, leading to fewer arrests and the appearance of improved safety.
In San Francisco, for instance, the police department's closure rate on cases remains dismally low due to the city district attorney's choice to prosecute fewer cases. For every 100 suspects arrested in San Francisco, as few as three are charged – and as few as one ends up getting convicted.
Before being recalled on July 8, 2022, San Francisco's DA was Chesa Boudin, a George Soros-backed radical.
Soros-backed radicals also work as district attorneys in other U.S. cities, including in Albuquerque, Austin, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Orlando, New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, San Antonio and three urban counties in northern Virginia around Washington, D.C.
Massachusetts also has a Soros-backed federal prosecutor named Rachael Rollins who was ultimately forced to resign after the Department of Justice's (DoJ) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and the Office of Special Counsel released a series of damning reports outlining her serious ethical lapses and partisan political activity.
In his book Discrimination and Disparities (2018, economist and philosopher Thomas Sowell tells the story of his brother confronting individuals who were looting and committing acts of arson.
Sowell's brother asked them simply, and in illustration of a major point of this article: "Where are you going to shop after you burn the store down?"

In-N-Out Burger announces CLOSURE of its Oakland, California location due to wave of car break-ins and robberies

In-N-Out Burger has announced that it will close its lone branch in Oakland, California – the first time in its 75-year history – due to a wave of car break-ins and robberies.
According to U.S. News and World Report, the crimes in Oakland have affected both employees and customers at the Oakland branch located near Oakland International Airport. Given this, the company will close the said location on March 24.
"[Despite] repeated steps to create safer conditions, our customers and associates are regularly victimized," In-N-Out CEO Denny Warnick said in a Jan. 24 statement. "We feel the frequency and severity of the crimes being encountered by our customers and associates leave us no alternative." (Related: Nordstrom to leave downtown San Francisco after 35 years due to city’s deteriorating conditions of high violence and crime.)
U.S. News continued that the In-N-Out set to close in March attracts both travelers headed to the airport and baseball fans who attend Oakland Athletics games at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. As per the San Francisco Chronicle, police have logged 1,335 incidents in the burger joint's vicinity on Oakport Street – more than any other location in the city – since 2019.
The Chronicle continued that Oakland has seen a spike in property crime and robberies. Based on data shared by the Oakland Police Department (OPD), that number includes nine robberies, two commercial burglaries, four domestic violence incidents and 1,174 car break-ins.
In response, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said more police officers have been assigned to the area. The OPD has also installed three "eye in the sky" cameras to monitor the area, she added.
"As mayor, I have prioritized this critical gateway to Oakland," Thao told KTVU 2. Despite this, she acknowledged that more needs to be done.
In-N-Out wasn't the only establishment forced to shut its doors due to the crime issue in California. The Chronicle recounted that a Starbucks at the Edgewater Drive Plaza closed down late last year, with placards advising motorists to protect their belongings the only remnants of its former operation. Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers meanwhile took precautions, shutting down its dining room and moving employee parking to a gated lot.
Several people recount crimes at In-N-Out's Oakland location

Several people have recounted to the Chronicle instances of robberies at the soon-to-be-closed In-N-Out branch. Sean Crawford, who works in a building around the corner from the restaurant, is one of them.
He has watched robbery crews bust doors of work vans and has heard In-N-Out customers loudly confronting burglars. In one such incident last year, Crawford saw two people get out of a car and approach the In-N-Out drive-thru lane. The two suspects went from vehicle to vehicle, robbing people at gunpoint.
Juliana Velasquez, who works at the In-N-Out location, also recounted how thieves ransacked her vehicle. "They broke the windows on both passenger sides," she told the Chronicle.
"The situation became so dire that In-N-Out staff place sandwich boards outside the business' glass doors, warning people to lock their cars and not leave any valuables inside," the outlet stated.
"Similar signs deck businesses throughout the corridor, revealing the desperation of merchants and city leaders to instill order on roadways that should form a grand carpet into Oakland. Instead, this area has earned a grim distinction as one of the nation's hot spots for stickups and smash-and-grabs."

Houston Mayor John Whitmire says city is “broke” after decades of overspending

Houston Mayor John Whitmire, a Democrat elected in December, provided a bleak warning during a City Hall meeting about the city's "broke" finances as he proposed a five percent cut across all city spending to alleviate the cash flow problem."I think we can all agree that we're broke," Whitmire said, before proposing the planned cuts. "This gives us a chance to discuss the financial picture of this city. It is broken. It was broken when I got here.”
With an estimated current deficit of at least $160 million, Whitmire's current proposal is for a five percent across-the-board cut to the entire budget of the city's government, with exceptions for the budgets of firefighters and police.
"I don't like a five percent cut now, but you have to make tough decisions and folks put me in this position to make tough decisions, and I'm going to do my job," said Whitmire. (Related: Mayor of El Paso, Texas says his city is now at BREAKING POINT due to influx of ILLEGALS.)
Whitmire's short tenure has seen him cough up an additional $650 million from the city budget for seven years of back pay and an additional $180 million for annual wage hikes over the next five years following the conclusion of a long-festering labor dispute with city firefighters.
Analysts say the deal delivers taxpayers a substantial discount from the amount an arbitrator would have likely awarded the aggrieved firefighters.
"This is going to come down to a financial sacrifice by the City. Now we can either be $1.2 billion broke or we can be $650 million broke," said City Councilmember Willie Davis of the deal.

Councilmember Tiffany Thomas expressed alarm at the city's mounting debt and warned that the city government might start charging Houston residents more for services.
"Are we going to fee Houstonians? Is it a trash fee? Are we paying for parking after six? Are we going after Metro's money? I mean what are we doing?" asked Thomas.
The mayor says the search for additional funding is underway and could include asking the taxpayers to step up. "I'm not going to play games with people's lives. I'm not going to play politics with people's lives. So we have a responsibility to settle with the firefighters and protect Houstonians," said Whitmire.
Houston has had problems with inflated spending for years

Houston, the United States' fourth largest city, has had a problem with its spending for years. But the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the assistance the city received from the federal government during this time provided some leeway for the city to mask its overspending.
"COVID really silenced the conversation because we got so much money from the federal government that we were able to make our budgets work, but really, this problem started 20 years ago, almost a quarter of a century ago, with the pension funds," said John Diamond, director of the Center for Public Finance at Rice University.
Former Mayor Sylvester Turner, another Democrat who left office in January, falsely claimed he was leaving the city with a $420 million surplus.
"The budget surplus is largely thanks to $1 billion in federal recovery funds Houston received during the pandemic, which Turner has mostly used to cover city expenses while driving up its reserve account," wrote Houston Chronicle staff writer Dylan McGuinness.
During his time in office, Turner who could not run again due to term limits, was criticized by former Mayor Annise Parker, financial groups and even the city comptroller for his handling of public funds.
“Let me just say, the sky is not falling,” Turner told the local paper last year. But local critics insist Turner wasn't telling the truth.
"This has been obvious to anyone following the city's finances for well over a decade," said local businessman Bill King. "The you-know-what would have hit the fan in the last administration had it not been for this incredible influx of federal dollars."
A tax hike through a bond is expected in November.
"That's very likely what we're looking at, going to the voters this November and saying, 'Here's the plan, here's what it's going to cost, and we're asking you to chip in,'" City Controller Chris Hollins said.
Critics say the city should not default to taxing residents when they could raise the money by cutting the fat inside city hall and selling city property, including a very valuable art collection owned by the city. "The first thing we need to do is find where the money is first as opposed to the typical liberal answer to every problem: raise taxes on the people," conservative political analyst Gary Polland suggested.
