LAPD officers shoot, kill armed man in Echo Park

LAPD officers shoot, kill armed man in Echo Park [Updated]

    September 28, 2010 | 7:08 pm

Los Angeles police Tuesday afternoon shot and killed a heavily armed man who confronted officers during a traffic stop.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., three officers patrolling the city’s Echo Park neighborhood came upon a suspicious-looking vehicle. A check of its license plate revealed that the car had been reported stolen and the suspected thief was thought to be armed and dangerous, said LAPD Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger.

The officers stopped the car in the 1600 block of Temple Street, where the suspect exited and turned toward the officers; he was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle or similar weapon, Paysinger said. Two officers opened fire, killing the man, he said.

Paysinger said that along with the rifle, a handgun was discovered in the man’s back pocket.

It was not immediately known if the suspect fired on the officers, Paysinger said, and investigators were working to determine details of the pursuit and the shooting.

Aerial news photographs appeared to show a black rifle on the ground next to the suspect’s body, which had been lifted by officials onto a gurney and covered with a sheet.

The name of the dead man has not been released.

The shooting occurred about a mile from the scene of another fatal shooting by police earlier this month. That incident, in which a man reportedly was armed with a knife and threatening passersby, sparked several days of protests and violent skirmishes between police and demonstrators.

Paysinger said there were no signs of unrest by onlookers Tuesday.

[Updated, 8:45 p.m.: At least 139 people in Los Angeles County have been killed by law enforcement officers since January 2007, according to coroner's data collected by The Times.

    5:52 p.m. PDT, September 28, 2010

LOS ANGELES -- There was a deadly shooting Tuesday between LAPD officers and a felony suspect who opened fire on them with an AK-47 assault rifle.

The shooting happened late Tuesday afternoon in the 1600 block of Temple Ave, not far from Echo Park.

LAPD officials say officers were following the convicted felon through the Downtown L.A. area when suddenly he stopped, stepped out of his car and opened fire at officers with the assault rifle.

Officers immediately returned fire with their weapons, striking the gunman several times and killing him.

The AK-47 is the most popular assault rifle in the world. It is able to fire 600 rounds per minute at an approximate rate of 2,200 feet per second. The bullet is able to pass through most body armor.

None of the officers was hit in the gunfight nor were any innocent by-standers injured.

A 7.62X39 round will not penetrate level 111 & IV ceramic vests. The first article states that the dirt bag felon opened fire on the officers, the second states that he turned on the officers and was shot. The second article also states that the dirt bag was armed with an AK-47 assualt rifle or ''similar'' weapon and that it was unknown if the dirt bag actually opened fire on the officers.I thought a shootout consisted of the bad guys and the good guys shooting at each other.Outstanding journalism.

The police don't instantly release all info to the press during an on going investigation. The press tries to gather info from anyone who will talk to them. Some don't know what they are talking about, but act like they do. The people want info and the press is caught between lack of facts from the police and demand for info from the people. It's a no win situation.

Echo Park gunman fatally shot by LAPD had history of weapons convictions

    September 29, 2010 | 5:19 pm

A heavily armed man who was shot and killed by Los Angeles police officers after a confrontation during a traffic stop in Echo Park was identified Wednesday as Jack Schlesinger, whom authorities described as a parolee with multiple weapons convictions.

Schlesinger had convictions dating back to at least 2002, when he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years in state prison for shooting into an inhabited dwelling, authorities said. He was convicted several additional times between 2004 and 2008 for possessing a weapon in state prison.

After his release from prison April 22, 2010, Schlesinger failed to report to his parole officer and within a week was classified as a parolee at large.

Schlesinger's death comes two weeks after authorities identified parolee-at-large Omar Loera, who was released early from state prison after serving 23 months of his 32-month sentence, as the suspect in the July slaying of Valley Village resident Chere Osmanhodzic.

Paul M. Weber, president of the union representing LAPD officers, said the incident shows ongoing problems with the parole system.

"For two years, the [union] has been warning state leaders and residents that the [California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation's] various failures, from early release to failing to supervise parolees, represent a significant threat to the public," Weber said. "Schlesinger was only one of 13,000 dangerous felons that the CDCR was supposed to be supervising but who had not reported to his parole officer and therefore was classified as 'at large,' free to roam our streets."

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck also has questioned the parole system. In July, he asked the state corrections department to investigate how a parolee who fired nearly a dozen gunshots at two LAPD officers in the San Fernando Valley was able to gain early release and why he was classified as a low-level offender.

In his letter to the corrections secretary, Beck expressed concern that the suspect in that case, Javier Joseph Rueda, 28, of Panorama City, had been placed on "non-revocable parole" in May after serving just two years of a 10-year prison sentence.

LAPD detectives said that Schlesinger was suspected in a series of armed robberies in the Valley and that the car he was riding in Tuesday when he was stopped by police was reported stolen in a carjacking.

Officers stopped the car in the 1600 block of Temple Street. Schlesinger got out of the vehicle armed with an SKS assault rifle and turned toward the officers, police said. Two officers opened fire, killing him. Police recovered a handgun in the man’s back pocket.
