USF honors activist who risks deportation to fight for reform
May 17th, 2011
By George Raine
The University of San Francisco on May 20 will confer an honorary doctorate on Isabel Castillo, an undocumented immigration activist who can be deported at any time.
The 26-year-old, Mexican-born Virginian, who came to the U.S. with her family at the age of six, has seen her future stalled because of her immigration status, but her vigorous activism has made her one of the faces of a dogged campaign for citizenship for undocumented young people.
Castillo, of Harrisonburg, Va., a city of 48,000 in the Shenandoah Valley, has been an advocate for the Dream Act, legislation that would provide conditional permanent residency to certain undocumented students whose parents brought them to the U.S. illegally when they were children. The non-partisan Immigration Policy Center in Washington, D.C., estimates that there are 1.9 million undocumented children and young adults in the U.S. who might be eligible for legal status under the Dream Act.
The bill was approved by the House of Representatives last fall but it failed in the Senate in December as it lacked the necessary 60 votes for passage, at 55-41 in favor. It was reintroduced on May 11 by Democratic Sens. Richard Durbin of Illinois, Harry Reid of Nevada and Robert Menendez of New Jersey. The ebb and flow of the legislation have disappointed and emboldened Castillo and other immigration activists.

It's just another illegal breaking another law and putting another American out of work.
I have to wonder how much the restaurant she works at saves on their annual tax bill?Illegal, or unlawful, is used to describe something that is prohibited or not authorized by law
