BILLINGS, Mont. — A spokeswoman for a California company being investigated for its attempted take over of an empty Montana jail says the company will not provide financial documents and other information sought by the state's attorney general.

Monday was the deadline to provide the documents following revelations that Michael Hilton – the lead figure of American Police Force – has a lengthy criminal background.

Company spokeswoman Becky Shay says Hilton sent a one-page fax to the attorney general's office Monday saying he was no longer pursuing the project.

Hilton had convinced officials in rural Hardin to enter a deal that would have allowed him to take over the city's 464-bed jail. Hilton also said he wanted to build and run a law enforcement and military training center.

A spokesman for Attorney General Steve Bullock could not be reached immediately for comment.
