Using their majority, Democrats in the U.S. Congress plan to all but exclude Republicans in the first 100 hours of House debate in Washington, leaders say.
Many of the issues Democrats will address beginning Thursday were debated in the last 109th Congress, and are expected to be whisked to the Senate, where the Democrats have a razor-thin 51-49 majority, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.
In the House, Democrats have a 16-seat majority.
Among the bills to be moved through the House with little GOP input are ethics reform, raising the minimum wage, lowering student loan rates and allowing more stem cell research, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.
In the Nov. 7 midterm elections, Democrats promised to make the 110th Congress a civil one in which Democrats and Republicans work together to solve the problems, but the New York Times said there is some chomping at the bit among Democrats who have never been in a majority.
Of 233 Democrats who will be sworn in, 147, or 63 percent, were elected since Republicans took control of the House in 1994, and have never served in the majority party.
