No NAFTA Trucks on our Highways!

The administration is continuing its push to expand the NAFTA trucking program -- the controversial "pilot program" giving Mexico-based trucking companies full access to U.S. roads, without adequate measures to ensure public safety -- despite Congress de-funding this program specifically in an appropriations bill President Bush signed into law last month.

This expansion of the NAFTA trucks program blatantly disregards the newly passed federal law. The provision prohibits using any funds to "establish" a pilot program. The dictionary's definition of "establish" includes "to introduce and cause to grow and multiply."

However, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has told reporters that the law bars only the "establishment" of new pilot programs and that its current pilot program - the exact same one that prompted Congress to cut off funding - was "established" in September 2007. Yet, they continue to authorize new carriers, further "establishing" the program in any meaning of the term.

This dubious definition isn't just tortured logic ? it's a willful repudiation of the clear intent of Congress to end a flawed program it has repeatedly and overwhelmingly denounced as dangerous and unjustified.

The Bush administration insists on pushing forward, despite requirements to put the public's safety first. Act now and tell Congress to follow up on their work and demand Bush follow the law!

Sen. Dorgan sent a letter to the head of DOT on Jan. 2nd or 3rd and told her she was breaking the law, and that she and Bush new good and well it included the pilot program they have let go forward...

I e-maild Dorgan and several other Senators about this!!

We need to keep our eyes open to see what happens...The teamsters are pretty upset also.
