Metro police say a suspect who opened fire in a Antioch theater this afternoon also had a hatchet and may have injured one person with the hatchet.

Police said about 2:20 p.m. they were examining two backpacks, one on the suspect and one left in the theater, to make sure they are not dangerous. Police spokesman Don Aaron said officers entered the theater showing Mad Max through the projection room and engaged the suspect in gunfire.

"The officer started at the projection room and started clearing down," Aaron said. "He encountered the gunman. The gunman opened fire on the South Precinct officer. That officer returned his fire, and then backed away out of the theater."

The SWAT team responded and confronted the suspect, Aaron said.

"There was gunfire and the gunman is deceased just inside the movie theater," he said. "So we believe the imminent threat has been ended."

A police dispatcher said the shooting was reported at 1:13 p.m. at the theater at 901 Bell Road. The theater is Carmike Hickory 8, according to address records.

At about 1:50 p.m., police scanner traffic indicated it was still an active situation.

Minutes after 2 p.m., Metro Nashville police tweeted that the suspect was dead.

Extra police patrols have reportedly been assigned at Bellevue 8 movie theater. Dozens of police officers flooded the scene of the shooting and blocked traffic in the area.

Jeremy Cardoza, who works at Ford Ice Center nearby, said the business was on lockdown and no one was allowed in or to leave. He said there were about 25 people there at the time, mostly children.

"We're waiting on instructions from police, we have not been contacted yet," he said. "We had a parent come in and they kind of just told us that there were a bunch of cops posted outside."

these kinds of shooters are obviously trying to target the gun free zones of theaters. We should let conceal carry people go to theaters with their guns and much of this should stop!

Police: Tenn. theater attack suspect had been committed 4 times

    By Steve Almasy, CNN
Updated 9:45 PM ET, Wed August 5, 2015

(CNN)The man who was killed Wednesday by Nashville police after he allegedly went after moviegoers with a hatchet and pepper spray had been committed to a mental institution four times, police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters.

Vincente David Montano was committed twice in 2004 and twice in 2007, said Aaron, citing officials in Rutherford County.

Montano also had an airsoft pistol, police said in a tweet that showed a gun recovered at the scene. Such a weapon can fire plastic or BB pellets.

"We have no motive for this," Aaron said.

Aaron said Montano had been reported missing by his mother to Texas police two days ago and they had notified authorities in Tennessee.

Aaron told reporters that one patron at the screening of "Mad Max: Fury Road" suffered a minor cut on a shoulder from a hatchet before officers killed the suspect.

A man wielding a gun, a hatchet and pepper spray was killed inside a Tennessee movie theater after police responding to reports of an active shooter traded gunshots with the suspect, Nashville police said. Nashville Police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters that one moviegoer suffered a minor cut on a shoulder from a hatchet before police officers killed the suspect as he tried to go out the back door.

Police Chief Steve Anderson said the Montano was 29 years old.

Earlier, police had described him as a 51-year-old local man. He had identification on him, Anderson said, but authorities want to check fingerprints to confirm his identity.

The wounded man had a superficial injury to his arm, fire department spokesman Brian Haas said.

The man, who was identified as Steven, told reporters that police did a "phenomenal job" in responding to the calls for help. He was one of eight people in the theater, and one of three who were pepper sprayed by the assailant. He said his daughter was also sprayed.

"I am very, very grateful that no one else got injured here today -- other than the person who perpetrated this," Steven said.

No one was transported to a hospital, Haas said, but Steven, his daughter and another woman suffered irritation from pepper spray apparently used by the suspect, who was wearing a surgical mask.

The pepper spray contained red dye, Anderson said.

The suspect also had two backpacks with him, Aaron said. The bomb squad destroyed one backpack that contained a "hoax device," Aaron said.

Police were called to the Carmike Hickory 8 movie theater complex in the Nashville suburb of Antioch at 1:15 p.m. CT. Two officers were already at the mall working a car accident when people came running toward them. The officers were inside the complex withing two minutes, Aaron said.

One officer -- who entered the theater and fired at the man before backing away -- said he saw a gun. The SWAT team arrived and had to don gas masks due to the heavy chemical spray in the theater, Aaron said. The man tried to flee out the back door.

Brad Ransom, who told CNN he works across the street from the theater, said he saw four or five officers along the side of the building around the time of the fatal shooting.

More than a dozen gunshots, fired in rapid succession, can be heard in a video recorded during the fatal shooting. The video doesn't show the shooting.

A woman who worked at a Sprint store near the scene told CNN's Brooke Baldwin that about three hours earlier, a man with two backpacks tried to enter her store through their back door.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sent a team to help with the investigation.
