6 Arrests Made So Far

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Police make a major drug bust, and they said they aren't finished yet. Investigators believe methamphetamine they seized came straight from Mexico. So far, six arrests have been made and thousands of dollars in cash has also been confiscated. Louisville Metro, Jeffersontown and Shelbyville authorities were all involved in the bust. Investigators said the pieces began falling into place Wednesday afternoon. "The meth you see here has not been cut, (it has a) very high value on the street," said Jeffersontown Police Maj. Ken Hatmaker. It is just a portion of what police seized in Louisville and Shelbyville. It began when officers pulled over a vehicle at the intersection of Denver Lane and Mariemont Road in far southwestern Jefferson County. Two Hispanic men were arrested after methamphetamine was discovered in their car. That let police to Kentucky Street in Shelbyville, where they found a man believed to be the ringleader for methamphetamine distribution in the area. "We found almost four pounds of crystal meth in the house. It came from Mexico, it's pure," said Shelbyville Police Chief Bob Schutte. Another three arrests were made in Shelbyville. Based on what authorities learned in Shelbyville, officers obtained a search warrant for a home on Lower River Road in Louisville. "We went there and were able to obtain close to $30,000 of drug proceeds in the attic of a rental home out there," said Hatmaker. The arrest of the man living in the house on Lower River Road brought the number of men in jail so far to six. Police confiscated several guns, along with both liquid meth and crystal meth, about 10 pounds total. "We confiscated over $300,000 in drugs, just what we've done so far," said Hatmaker. The actual start of the investigation, according to police, began with a very small amount of meth that was seized around Christmas in the Jeffersontown area, and the investigation grew from there. More arrests are expected. The man arrested in Shelbyville, 30-year old Martel Alaniz, was labeled the ringleader. He has been turned over to federal authorities.
