Previous efforts to fix immigration laws have resulted in failure. The Greater Houston Partnership seeks to represent a reasonable voice for business and industry as leaders in Washington look for immigration reform and solutions. So far, such a voice has been missing from this debate. The Greater Houston Partnership, which represents the Houston-area business community, along with Americans for Immigration Reform, brings to Washington a unique perspective to the issue. The Houston region is home to about 3,000 international businesses, government offices and nonprofit organizations, and the headquarters of twenty-nine Fortune 500 companies. Some 90 foreign countries maintain consular offices in Houston.
There is no true ethnic majority in the Houston region, as no one group constitutes more than 50 percent of the population. One in five Houstonians is foreign-born, with one in ten identifying Mexico as their country of origin.
