HARTFORD, Conn. — Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez surrendered to Connecticut State Police for the second time this year amid a corruption investigation of city government.

Perez and former state Rep. Abraham Giles turned themselves in Wednesday and were charged with attempted extortion and conspiracy.

Both deny the allegations.

State prosecutors say Perez and Giles took part in a scheme to extort money from a person who was seeking to develop properties, including land that Giles was paying the city to use as a parking lot.

Prosecutors say the deal included a $100,000 lease-termination fee with Giles to vacate the lot so the development could move forward.

Perez was charged in January with taking a bribe. That case is pending
