Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap: AC/DC Drummer Phil Rudd Arrested in Murder-for-Hire Plot

Rock legend AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd, 60, was arrested and charged with procuring murder, threatening to kill and drug charges. However, one day after the arrest, the charges of procuring murder were dismissed for "insufficient evidence," but the drug and threatening to kill charges remained.

The sixty year old drummer from New Zealand had his home raided, which resulted in his arrest and charges filed against him. The murder-for-hire charge, which was an attempt to procure the murder of two men, was dropped the next day by Greg Hollister-Jones, Crown Solicitor of Tauranga, New Zealand in the Tauranga District Court.
According to the New Zealand Herald:

Police said this afternoon: "After a first appearance in court (Rudd) was bailed to reappear on 27 November. In matters of this nature the Crown Solicitor then becomes responsible for the prosecution.

"Today the Crown reviewed the charges and made the decision to withdraw the charge of attempting to procure murder. Other charges remain before the court."

Police refused to answer questions about their decision to charge Rudd and whether they stood by it. They also refused to say whether they regret not seeking Crown advice before arresting Rudd, or any distress the withdrawn charge caused him.

They would not say whether they were reviewing the decision to charge Rudd with attempting to procure murder, or the handling of the case in general.

Mr Hollister-Jones' office confirmed that after Rudd's appearance in court, the Crown Solicitor's office became responsible for his prosecution.

"The file was obtained today and reviewed. Mr Hollister-Jones made the decision that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the charge of attempting to procure a murder. The police and counsel for Mr Rudd were advised of the decision.

"No further comment can be because there are three other charges before the court."

Rudd entered no plea to the charges and will have to reappear in three weeks on November 27.
In a press release, Rudd attorney Paul Mabey QC said,

The decision to charge Mr Rudd was made by the New Zealand Police without consultation with the Tauranga Crown Solicitor.

I am engaged to represent Mr Rudd on instructions from his solicitor, Karen Gravatt, of Sharp Tudhope Solicitors, Tauranga. I met today with the Tauranga Crown Solicitor and Senior Members of the Police.

I was advised by the Crown Solicitor, Mr Hollister-Jones, that he had reviewed the Police file and the available evidence to support the charge of Attempting to Procure Murder. He had formed the view that there was insufficient evidence to justify that charge. He has now withdrawn the charge.

Mr Rudd has suffered unnecessary and extremely damaging publicity as a result of widespread and sensational reporting of a very serious allegation, which on any basis was never justified.

The damage to Mr Rudd is incalculable. Questions arise as to the degree of care taken by those responsible for arresting and charging him with Attempting to Procure Murder.

Sadly, procuring murder would have only had Rudd facing up to ten years in prison. I'd say that is a dirty deed done dirt cheap, eh?

Rudd was the drummer for AC/DC from 1975 to 1983 and then again from 1994 to the present. Rudd's wealth is enormous. He owns a fleet of luxury vehicles that are estimated at $8-10 million. The alleged hitman named him the "Hugh Hefner of Tauranga" in court documents.

However, is anyone really surprised by this? This is a man that played in a band that glorified debauchery and the very things he is charged with.

For those that don't know, the song Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap was released in 1976 on an album by the same name. Here are the lyrics to that song, which glorifies procuring murder.

One cannot promote these kinds of things without first thinking of doing them. Second, after decades of playing this song over and over for loyal and new fans, it is completely understandable that he would eventually begin to practice what he helped to preach.

Though Rudd was not the singer, he apparently agreed with the words of the song. Jesus said, "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh."

It seems that Rudd's actions are finally catching up to what is in his heart… as they always do.
