I know we remember this day as Veteran's Day, but it is actually the day that signified that on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month that the guns of August fell silent. Ending 4 years of bloodshed from 1914 to 1918.

I remember as a kid in school we would make paper poppies and sell them for a dollar. All the proceeds were counted up, and delivered to the Veteran's Hospital, and donated.

I was in 3rd or 4th grade when the Mrs. Schmitt, the principal came around to every room to tell us kids we made an astounding 2,800 dollar donation that year, which beat the old record of like 1900 dollars for the veterans. I don't think kids do that anymore. At least out here in Denver they don't.

    Found this,

    Author unknown

Why are they selling poppies, Mummy?
    Selling poppies in town today.
The poppies, child, are flowers of love.
For the men who marched away,
But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy?
    Why not a beautiful rose?
Because, my child, men fought and died,
In the fields where the poppies grow.
But why are the poppies so red, Mummy?
Why are the poppies so red?
Red is the colour of blood, my child.
The blood that our soldiers shed.
The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy.
Why does it have to be black?
Black, my child, is the symbol of grief.
For the men who never came back.
But why. Mummy, are you crying so?
Your tears are giving you pain.
My tears are my fears for you, my child,
For the world is forgetting again.
