Machine gun found in the water at Children's Pool

LA JOLLA — A machine pistol and several rounds of ammunition were discovered in the water Tuesday at the Children’s Pool in La Jolla.

Someone walking along the seawall spotted the high-powered MAC-10 in about 2 to 3 feet of water about 12:15 p.m. and notified a lifeguard, police Detective Gary Hassen said.

Officers secured the area and a police diver recovered the weapon and 44 assorted bullets of different calibers, Hassen said.

It did not appear that the unloaded weapon had been in the water very long, Hassen said.

Investigators impounded the assault weapon and are checking its serial number to see if they can find the owner.

MAC-10s are illegal to own in California without the proper permits.

Wikipedia describes the gun as a highly compact, blowback operated machine pistol developed by the Military Armament Corporation in 1964.

I saw this on the news last night.

First thought....gee whiz ya think it could it have come from a smuggler?

We've certainly had enough of them by boat lately!
