Nutmeg is a popular spice used on eggnog, desserts and various baked goods.
But did you know that nutmeg also offers some health benefits and contains beneficial antioxidants?
What is nutmeg?
Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) is a spice that is commonly used in baked goods, holiday treats, ethnic cuisine and different beverages.
Nutmeg is produced by grinding nutmeg seeds from a flowering plant of the Myristicaceae family, sometimes called the nutmeg family. The plant is native to Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands.
Nutmeg spice has a sweet taste and is often used with other sweet spices such as cinnamon, clove and allspice.
Nutrition profile of nutmeg, a spice with antioxidants
Some studies have found that nutmeg has antioxidant, antibacterial, antidiabetic, pain-relieving, liver-protecting and cancer-preventative properties.
Aside from its use as a flavoring spice in Asian, European, Middle Eastern and African cuisines and traditional American baked goods, nutmeg also has a history of medicinal use.
Data suggests that nutmeg has a long history of being used to relieve chronic pain. Findings from rat studies have also suggested that nutmeg oil may have potential as a chronic pain reliever.
According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), one serving (one teaspoon or 2.2 grams) of ground nutmeg provides 12 calories. The calories come from carbohydrates (1.08 g), protein (0.13 g) and fat (0.8 g).
Nutmeg contains a small amount of vitamins A and C, choline and folate, but not in amounts that will impact your daily recommended intake of those vitamins. It also contains minerals like calcium (3.7 mg), magnesium (3.7 mg), potassium (7.0 mg), phosphorus (4.3 mg) and small amounts of sodium and manganese. Tips for buying, preparing and storing nutmeg
You can buy nutmeg in whole or ground form. Ground nutmeg is commonly found in almost every grocery store.
If you want to buy whole nutmeg seeds to grind at home, you may need to visit a specialty market or purchase it online.
Keep in mind that ground nutmeg will lose its flavor quickly. This is why some cooks choose to buy it whole. Whole nutmeg seeds stay fresh indefinitely, so you can grind what you need at home and save the rest for later.
You can use nutmeg to flavor sweet baked goods such as apple pie, cookies and other desserts.
Nutmeg is used to make a bechamel sauce. The spice can also be used to make baked or stewed fruit and custards.
Nutmeg is also used when making curries, eggnog, punches, sauces (especially onion-based and milk sauces), pasta and vegetables, like spinach.
Lastly, nutmeg can also be used to flavor meats, like lamb or starchy vegetables.
Considerations before using nutmeg
While nutmeg is often used in cooking and baking, the spice or its essential oil can be used to gain a nutmeg high. Remember that using nutmeg-like this can have serious side effects.
According to some sources, nutmeg affects the nervous system and the imagination. Some experts have warned that nutmeg essential oil can have a hypnotic or hallucinogenic effect.
There are also published reports of nutmeg being used as a psychotropic drug with harmful consequences.
According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, nutmeg is safe when consumed in amounts typically found in food. However, the overconsumption of nutmeg may be risky and can cause adverse effects such as nausea, vomiting and hallucination.
There are reports of nutmeg poisoning dating back to the early 1900s, with symptoms including burning pain in the stomach, giddiness, or precordial anxiety. Scientists suggest that the toxic effects of nutmeg are due to the presence of myristicin oil, a natural organic compound found in the spice.
In one published report, scientists discovered that nutmeg poisoning is rare but probably underreported and should be considered in recreational substance users with acute psychotic symptoms and central nervous system symptoms.
Use nutmeg in moderation to make delicious desserts and savory sauces.

Health benefits of antioxidant-rich cranberries
Cranberries are a great source of nutrients and antioxidants and they can provide various health benefits when eaten as part of a balanced diet.
https://www.naturalnews.com/images/B...hLiveShows.jpg
Cranberries are native to North America. Now, cranberries are grown across the northern United States, Canada and Chile.
Can help with UTIs
Cranberries are often used as traditional treatments for UTIs.
The high level of antioxidant proanthocyanidins (PACs) in cranberries may help prevent certain bacteria from binding to the urinary tract walls. This suggests that PACs in cranberries may help prevent a urinary tract infection (UTI).
In a 2016 review, researchers found that medical professionals most commonly recommend cranberries for women with recurrent UTIs.
Another 2014 study of 516 participants revealed that taking a capsule of cranberry extract twice per day reduced the incidence of UTIs. (Related: Prevent urinary tract infections naturally with this antioxidant-rich superfood.)
May help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
According to a 2019 systematic review, supplementing cranberries in your diet may help you manage several risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). These include systolic blood pressure, which is the blood pressure during a contraction of the heart muscle.
The review also suggested that cranberry supplementation helped reduce body mass index (BMI) and improve levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or "good" cholesterol.
In another study from 2019, scientists examined 78 volunteers who were overweight or were obese. Their findings showed that consuming a single dose of a low-calorie cranberry beverage with a high content of plant compounds daily improved someone's regulation of blood sugar, chemical signs of inflammation and increased levels of HDL lipoprotein.
May help slow cancer progression
A 2016 review of 34 preclinical studies showed that cranberries or compounds in cranberries had several beneficial effects on cancer cells in test tubes.
These benefits included reducing inflammation, slowing the growth of cancer cells and triggering the death of cancer cells.
The 2016 review also found that cranberries can affect several other mechanisms that promote cancer growth and spread.
Can help promote oral health
The PACs in cranberries may also benefit oral health. A 2019 study revealed that PACs in fruits like cranberries may help teeth against a strand of bacteria that causes tooth decay.
Cranberries may also help protect against gum disease.
How to incorporate cranberries into a balanced diet
Farmers harvest fresh cranberries in September and October, so fall is the best time to purchase them. If you want to get cranberries the rest of the year, they are also available dried, frozen, or canned.
Another option is to refrigerate fresh cranberries or freeze them for later use.
Here are some suggestions on how to incorporate cranberries into a balanced diet:
- Add dried cranberries to oatmeal or whole-grain cereal for breakfast.
- Make a homemade trail mix with unsalted nuts and seeds of your choice and dried cranberries.
- Add a small handful of frozen cranberries to a fruit smoothie.
- Add dried or fresh cranberries into a muffin or cookie recipe.
- Add dried cranberries to a salad.
- Include fresh cranberries in an apple dessert, such as pies, for extra flavor.
- Make molded cranberry sauce.
- Bake a cranberry-cherry cobbler pie.
- Make cranberry mulled white wine.
- Make cranberry-walnut shortbread bars.
Keep in mind that some store-bought cranberry products may contain added sugars because cranberries are quite tart and may be difficult to consume without some added sweetener.
Always check the ingredients label and choose the product with the least added sugar.
Store-bought cranberry juice may contain other fruit juices and added sweeteners. When looking for cranberry juice that offers the most benefits, check labels that lists cranberry as the primary ingredient.
Considerations before eating cranberries
Cranberries are usually safe to consume, but if you are taking the blood-thinning drug warfarin (Jantoven), discuss your intake of cranberries with your doctor. Data suggests that it may interact with warfarin or other blood thinners and cause increased anticlotting effects.
Cranberry products may also cause a higher excretion of oxalate in urine. This could promote the formation of kidney stones if you are susceptible to calcium oxalate-type stones.
If you have a history of kidney stones, talk to your healthcare provider before increasing their intake of cranberries.
Follow a balanced diet and add cranberries to salads or bake goods to boost your intake of vitamin C and various nutrients.

Check out these 7 food additives that are BANNED in Europe but commonly used in the U.S.
11/17/2023 // Ethan Huff // 9.7K Views
Tags: additives, azodicarbonamide, badcancer, badfood, badhealth, BHA, BHT, brominated vegetable oil, cancer causes, cancer criminals, chemicals, clean food watch, food additives, food coloring, food police, food science, food supply, gras, grocery, Potassium bromate, rBGH, stop eating poison, Titanium Dioxide, toxic ingredients, toxins
https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...Background.jpg
Americans with health issues like gluten intolerance often notice that their symptoms go away when they visit Europe. The reason is that the American food supply is tainted with all sorts of toxic food additives that are banned in other countries.
One such additive is 1) titanium dioxide, a whitening agent often added to American flour, bread, candy, boxed macaroni and cheese, canned soup and prepackaged baked goods.
In May 2021, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) determined that titanium dioxide could be genotoxic, meaning it has the potential to impair DNA or chromosomes.
Titanium dioxide also breaks down into nanoparticles that can trigger inflammation, pulmonary damage, fibrosis and lung tumors in rodents – and is "possibly carcinogenic to humans," according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
2) Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are two other additives found in U.S. food but not European food. These two chemical preservatives, which prevent oils from being oxidized, trigger immune effects and are potentially carcinogenic.
Another big one is 3) synthetic food colorings. While most other countries seem to use natural food colorings, the U.S. allows petroleum-based food colorings in food such as Yellow No. 5 and Red No. 40, which are linked to hyperactivity and behavioral problems in children.
4) Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) is used in U.S. beverages as an emulsifier, though it was successfully removed from Coca-Cola in 2012 following a massive petition campaign that generated more than 200,000 signatures.
https://www.naturalnews.com/images/B...hLiveShows.jpg
BVO is banned in Europe, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) thinks it is just fine for Americans, even though BVO has been shown to cause neurological disease and reproductive harm.
(Related: Another food "additive," of sorts, to be concerned about is mRNA from COVID-"vaccinated" animal meat.)
Watch out for tainted U.S. flour and bread products
Many American flours, breads and other baked goods are infused with 5) azodicarbonamide (ADA), a bleaching agent that animal studies have shown is an organ and cellular toxin, and that can also cause respiratory complications in humans.
The European Union (EU) prohibits ADA as a food additive there, but here in the U.S. it is used in all sorts of things, despite causing "significant behavioral changes" in rats fed a diet containing it.
6) Potassium bromate is another flour, bread and baked goods additive that contains small amounts of bromate, a known carcinogen that has been banned in all European countries. California banned potassium bromate in October, though this will not take effect until 2027.
Animal studies show that potassium bromate triggers the formation of tumors, while other studies show that cancers of the thyroid, kidneys and other organs are also tied to consumption of this toxin.
"Despite the significant evidence of potassium bromate's harmful health effects, the food industry has long argued that it is of no concern in baked products," commented the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
Finally, 7) recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is another food additive, this one used in milk and dairy products, that is prohibited in the EU but allowed in the U.S.
While many milk and dairy producers in the U.S. voluntarily avoid the use of rBGH in their animals, others do not, which is a problem since rBGH has been linked to increased blood levels of growth hormone that can trigger hormone-related cancers such as breast and testicular.
"It causes a huge number of side effects in cows themselves and potentially has health risks for humans consuming these cows," warns Dr. Sheela Sathyanarayana.
"Overall, the EU takes a more precautionary approach in banning this substance to prevent impacts on human health, while the United States takes the approach of waiting until we see harmful effects before regulating."

A Medicinal Plant MAP That Should Be in Your Survival Kit
Monday, November 20, 2023 11:57
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...-Plant-Map.jpg
by C. DAVIS
A hundred years ago 70% of all medicines were made from plants.
Most of them are still being used today, but only a few people truly know about them.
The Pharmaceutical Industry almost made this knowledge obsolete. But in my opinion this knowledge should not be lost. We might need it when things go really bad. So please feel free to share or print this article (or the map) and put it in your bug-out-bag or your SHTF survival kit. You ca also grow your medicinal garden. For this purpose I put together a Medicinal Garden Kit. The Medicinal Garden Kit is a great way to turn a backyard into a pharmacy. The kit contains ten powerful herbal seed packages( 2,409 high-quality seeds, GMO Free) that can help us provide relief from illness. Moreover, there is no need to worry about how to care for them as the product comes with a detailed instruction manual on how to use these medicinal plants. If you like to try you can get yours HERE !https://beforeitsnews.com/contributo...%201%20(3).jpg
The map was printed in 1932 and it was commonly used by pharmacists who were making “vegetable drugs”. The plants shown on this map grow natively or were cultivated in the United States. This map depicts one or two important species that grew in each state, but not exclusively in that particular state… more like in that area or region.
Back then, most pharmacists relied almost entirely on their “back yard pharmacy”.
Make no mistake thinking that this information will completely replace antibiotics. Of course you can treat common diseases, wounds, etc … but you should also store some antibiotics for really, really bad situations.
Medicinal plants as they appear on map, by state:
Washington
1. Digitalis Purpurea (Foxglove or Lady’s Glove)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...2015/05/12.jpg “Cultivated and naturalized in the U.S. The dried leaves constitute the drug Digitalis or Foxglove.”
Digitalis causes a rise in Sodium and in Calcium, which causes the heart to beat stronger and with a more regular rhythm. It is used particularly for the irregular (and often fast) atrial fibrillation. (Source)
Digitalis is often prescribed (nowadays) for patients diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Digitalis was approved for heart failure in 1998 under current regulations by the FDA on the basis of prospective, randomized study and clinical trials. The drug is called digoxin.
Be careful: eating more dried leaves of Foxglove than necessary can be poisonous, due to an excess of the same substance that heals you. An overdose will induce nausea and vomiting within minutes of ingestion, preventing the patient from consuming more. All this information is meant to serve as an advice only when SHTF. If you want to take the “plant drug” now, go to a doctor first to prescribe you the dosages.
2. Hydrastis Canadensis (Goldenseal, Orangeroot or Yellow Puccoon)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten.../2015/05/2.jpg “Native of Eastern US and Canada. The dried rhizome and roots constitute the drug Hydrastis or Golden Seal.”
Goldenseal became so popular in the mid-nineteenth century that by 1932, that the herb almost became extinct in the US.
Its influence upon the mucous surfaces renders it the most important natural cure in catarrhal gastritis and gastric ulceration. It supersedes all known remedies as a local, and also as a constitutional tonic when this condition is present. (Source)
Goldenseal has an affinity for mucosa, and is cooling so should not be used if an infection is at an early stage or there are more chills than fever. Avoid Goldenseal during pregnancy, avoid overdoses!
Montana
3. Dryopteris Filix-mas (Male Fern)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten.../2015/05/3.jpg“Native of North Europe, Asia and Northern North America. The rhizome and leaf bases constitute the drug Aspidium or Male Fern.”
Male fern contains chemicals which kill intestinal worms such as tapeworms. Once the worms have been killed, saltwater (saline) is taken to flush them from the body.
Intestinal tapeworm infections usually aren’t complicated, although they cause deaths in the US even with proper medical care. For example, Cysticercosis – a parasitic infection caused by the larval form of the pork tapeworm, who migrated to the brain, spine, eye, etc – can be deadly! And in times of crisis, it is deadly!
The downside is that Male Fern is unsafe. It is a poison. You take a normal dosage and the worms die. You take too much… and you’ll have serious problems. The appropriate dose of male fern depends on several factors such as the user’s age, health, and several other conditions. Consult your pharmacist or physician or before using.
4. Hyoscyamus Niger (Henbane or Stinking Nightshade)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten.../2015/05/4.jpg “Native of Europe, Westrn Asia and Northern Africa. Naturalized and cultivated in Northern US and Canada. The dried leaves constitute the drug Hyoscyamus.”
Henbane contains chemicals, which might relax the muscles lining the digestive tract. Henbane also relieves muscle tremors and have a calming effect. Mainly, Henbane dried leafs were used to treat spasms of the digestive tract.
Some people apply henbane leaf oil directly to the skin for treating scar tissue.
Since henbane is toxic, the dose must be carefully chosen and side effects checked by a healthcare professional.
Texas
5. Punica Granatum (Pomegranate)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...2015/05/50.jpg “Native of Northern India and cultivated in Sub-tropical regions. The dried bark constitutes the drug Granatum or Pomegranate Bark”.
Pomegranates are not only a delicious food, but every part of the tree has medicinal properties.
The bark and root of the tree contain powerful chemicals, that when prepared into a decoction, will safely kill intestinal parasites. It also effectively treats dysentery and it is one of the most powerful treatments for tuberculosis.
The fruit is considered a SUPERFOOD, as it is highly nutritious, with vitamin C, A, B2, phosphorous, and quite a few others, and has antioxidant properties. Russians used it after the Chernobyl incident to decrease the symptoms of radioactivity.

6. Gossypium Barbadense (Sea Island Cotton)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...2015/05/49.jpg “Native of Asia and Africa, but cultivated in Tropical and Sub-tropical countries. The hairs of the seed constitute purified cotton. The bark of the root constitutes the drug Cottonroot Bark”.
Sea Island cotton is considered one of the highest grade cottons for fabrics. Its leaves and seeds have also been used medicinally since the time of slavery.
Female slaves used the leaves to induce abortion and regulate menstruation. The seeds were eaten as a form of birth control. Women would rub the oil of the seeds on their breasts to induce milk production.
Extract of the flowers is used by herbalists to treat ear infections.
North Dakota
7. Linum Usitatissimum (Common Flax or Linseed)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten.../2015/05/5.jpg “Cultivated in Temperate and Tropical Regions. The dried ripe seed constitute Linseed or Flaxseed.”
The seeds have been used in traditional medicine internally (directly soaked or as tea) and externally (as compresses or oil extracts) for treatment of disorders of the respiratory tract, eyes, infections, cold, flu or fever.
Linseed oil is obtained from the dried ripe seeds of Flaxis by pressing, followed by a stage of extraction. Cold-pressed oil obtained without solvent extraction is marketed as flaxseed oil.
8. Dioscorea Villosa (Wild Yam)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten.../2015/05/6.jpg“Native of Easter and Central US. The dried rhizome constitutes the drug Dioscorea or Colic Root.”
Today components of wild yam are chemically manufactured into the hormones progesterone or estrogen.
So it is easy to understand why is often promoted as a “natural alternative” to estrogen therapy for vaginal dryness in older women, PMS, menstrual cramps, osteoporosis or increasing energy and sexual drive in men and women, and even breast enlargement.
Minnesota
9. Cypripedium Pubescens (Large Yellow Lady Slipper)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten.../2015/05/7.jpg “Native of Easter and Central US and Canada. The dried rhizome and roots constitute the drug Cypripedium or Lady’s Slipper.”
The Cypripediums are rare and endangered orchids.
All of the species of Cypripedium resemble valerian in their effects. They are excellent nerve stimulants for weak women and nervous children. They are nevertheless important medicines, being of that type of drugs which silently do great good without marked physiological disturbance.
It dispels gloom and induces a calm and cheerful state of mind, and by thus inducing mental tranquility favors restful sleep. (Source) In a crisis situation, you may not be able to rest or sleep because of the stress. This could lead to accumulated fatigue which leads to “unawareness” and wrong decisions.
(Preparedness Guide – Video)
10. Aralia Racemosa (American Spikenard, Life-of-man, Petty Morel)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten.../2015/05/8.jpg “Native of Eastern US and Canada. The rhizome and roots constitute the drug Aralia or Spikenard.”
Spikenard has been used as a healing plant from ancient times. Even the Bible contains several references to the spikenard. In Catholic iconography it represents Saint Joseph.Spikenard is antiseptic, depurative, diaphoretic, which makes it useful in a wide range of conditions including gout, rheumatism, coughs and lung complaints.Wisconsin
Spikenard root tea is a traditional American folk medicine treatment and a purifying spring tonic. It is also considered healing to the skin. (Source)
11. Polygala Senega (Seneca Snakeroot, Senegaroot or Rattlesnake Root)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten.../2015/05/9.jpg “Native of N. Central and Eastern US and Canada. The dried root constitutes the drug Senega or Snakeroot.
The species name honors the Seneca people, a Native American group who used the plant to treat snakebites. (Source)
This plant had many uses among Native Americans. Some used it to treat common colds, bleeding wounds or toothaches.
Today, the plant is still in use as a herbal remedy for a wide range of respiratory complains. It is also added to cough syrups, teas, lozenges, and gargles. (Source) It is one of the best natural expectorants: Senega causes a decrease in the viscosity (of secretions), giving a productive cough (or what today’s drug Mucinex does).
Michigan
12. Mentha Spicata (Spearmint, Garden Mint )
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...2015/05/10.jpg “Originally from Europe, it has been naturalized and cultivated in the US. The dried leaves and tops constitute the drug Spearmint.”
Spearmint tea reduces the level of free testosterone in the blood, so it is mostly indicated for women. It can also treat a variety of digestive ailments.
Spearmint’s essential oil was found to be a pretty effective anti-fungal and antioxidant.
The herb is also very rich in minerals like potassium, calcium, manganese, iron (a lot), and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure.
13. Mentha Piperita (Peppermint)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...015/05/111.jpg“Originally from Europe, it has been naturalized and cultivated in the US. The dried leaves and tops constitute the drug Peppermint.”
Peppermint is a cross between watermint and spearmint (a hybrid). Peppermint has the highest menthol content (8 times more than Spearmint).
Menthol stimulates the cold-perceiving nerves so just after taking it a current of air at the ordinary temperature seems cold. Useful in gastrodynia and flatulent cold.
For cramps try boiling peppermint leaves in hot milk. Take a quick whiff of peppermint oil for nausea.
Missouri
14. Ulmus Fulva (Slippery Elm)
http://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...2015/05/38.jpg“Native of North Eastern and North Central US and Canada. The Dried Inner Bark constitutes the drug Ulmus or Slippery-Elm Bark”.
The inner bark of the slippery elm tree is a commonly used herbal remedy. It can reduce the inflammation, stomach pain, and bloating that’s associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It also gently loosens the bowels and alleviates constipation.
Slippery elm bark mucilage (the substance that oozes from the bark when mixed with water) has a soothing and coating effect on mucous membranes. It can be used as a healing salve for boils, burns, and any skin inflammation.
The bark can be ground, made into porridge, and eaten, which is beneficial because it’s nutritious and an antioxidant. During food crisis this was one of the most common foods.
Unfortunately, I can’t cover all states and plants in one article. (It would have been too long and it would have probably blocked my server). Plus I wanted to add larger photos. So I decided to put all the information in one book that covers more than 800 plants, with photos, across the U.S. It’s called ”The Lost Book Of Herbal Remedies” Written in collaboration with my friend Dr. Nicole Apelian, a naturalist, a trainer in survival skills, and a Ph.D. holder. Her undergraduate education was in Biology at McGill University, and she continued her herbal studies. Her life was spent among one of the most ancient cultures of the world, the San Bushmen. For the past 20 years, Dr. Nicole has been dealing with her Multiple sclerosis by using natural remedies and medicinal plants she grows in her backyard. She has also survived 57 days all alone in the wild, which was later featured on a history TV channel. Her journey from a wheelchair to living the fullest life. Whenever she has any health issue like headache, body pain, fever, or infection, she turns towards her little backyard pharmacy. You can get your hardtop copy of the book HERE!

The Alkaline Diet: Another Cancer and Diet Claim – Alkaline Diet: The Key to Longevity and Fighting Chronic Disease?
https://i0.wp.com/www.mydailyinforme...00%2C350&ssl=1
Amber William November 22, 2023 0 Comments
Health
Alkaline Diet, Cancer, Chronic Disease
Does an alkaline diet prevent cancer?
The alkaline diet is one that has proved to be popular in celebrity culture, with claims that the diet can help protect the body against medical conditions such as cancer and arthritis, as well as help you lose weight. The diet is supposedly able to protect you against cancer because it reduces the amount of acid your body produces. This theory is based on the claim that cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment and can’t survive in alkaline surroundings, so an “alkalizing diet” would promote a more alkaline environment in the body and prevent cancer from developing. However, there are problems with this claim.
The studies finding that cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment were done in a laboratory setting. Your body is very good at maintaining its pH levels, without dietary influence. It would be nearly impossible to alter the cell environment to create a less-acidic environment in our bodies. For example, the stomach is very acidic for proper digestion, so we wouldn’t want it more alkaline.
Our acid-base balance is well regulated – blood pH is tightly controlled normally by the body between 7.35 and 7.45. If the pH level becomes too acidic or alkaline, that could be life threatening and is typically an indication of a serious health problem, though it’s not the underlying cause.
It’s actually very difficult for you to change the pH levels in your blood, as your body works hard to regulate and maintain these levels. Other areas of your body contain different levels of acidity, with your stomach being more acidic in order to breakdown any food you consume. So whilst you might stick to a strict alkaline diet, the pay-off may not be what you expect.
The diet does encourage an individual to eat healthily, owing to the emphasis on fruit and vegetables and avoidance of processed foods, so it does help with weight loss. However, it doesn’t have strong influence over the pH balance of your body.
Which foods are considered alkaline and which aren’t?
Generally, vegetables, fruits and seeds are considered to be alkaline, whilst meats, beans, nuts and grains are acidic. So, an alkaline diet would be rich in vegetables and fruit with little meat consumption. Dairy, eggs and processed foods aren’t considered alkaline and would be avoided in this diet. A diet focused on plant-based ingredients is similar to AICR’s diet recommendations for lowering cancer risk – with red meat limited to no more than 18 oz. per week, and avoiding processed meat.
However, some very healthy foods are listed as “acidic” such as whole grains, beans and even some vegetables such as carrots. So keep it simple and follow AICR’s New American Plate to lower cancer risk simply by filling at least 2/3 of your plate with vegetables, fruits and whole grains, and 1/3 or less with meat, poultry and fish.
What is the alkaline diet?
The alkaline diet is where an individual consumes food and drink that is categorized as alkaline. This means that on the pH scale* the item has a pH between 7-14. The aim is to reduce the amount of acidic food and drink consumed. The diet is derived from the notion that the different foods we eat affect the overall pH balance of our bodies. A quick search on Google for “alkaline diet” or “pH diet” results in hundreds of thousands of hits, so yes, it is very popular. The diet is also known as the “alkaline ash diet”, or the “alkaline acid diet”. Food is considered alkaline or acid based on laboratory combustion of the food.**
What other health benefit does the alkaline diet claim to offer?
There are many claims about this diet including weight loss, more energy and solutions to other common problems, such as stronger bones, lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes improving brain and heart health, but according to the American Dietetic Association, “large, well-designed clinical trials on the effectiveness of the many claims made for the alkaline diet are lacking.”
Just a note: the pH of urine can be changed somewhat by diet because the kidney is key in maintaining the proper body pH. Some proponents of this diet encourage checking your urine pH to see if your diet is alkaline or acid. Keep in mind that an increase in acid or alkaline in the urine reflects the fact that the kidney is doing its job. A change in urine status does not indicate a change in “overall body pH.”
Alkaline diets (also known as the alkaline ash diets) have been shown to help:
- prevent plaque formation in blood vessels
- stop calcium from accumulating in urine
- prevent kidney stones
- build stronger bones
- reduce muscle wasting or spasms
- and much more

What Does “pH Level” Mean?
What we call pH is short for the potential of hydrogen. It’s a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of the body’s fluids and tissues.
It’s measured on a scale from 0 to 14. The more acidic a solution is, the lower its pH. The more alkaline, the higher the number is.
A pH of around 7 is considered neutral, but since the optimal human body tends to be around 7.4, we consider the healthiest pH to be one that’s slightly alkaline.
These levels also vary throughout the body, with the stomach the most acidic region. Even very tiny alterations in the pH level of various organisms can cause major problems.
For example, due to environmental concerns, such as increasing CO2 deposition, the pH of the ocean has dropped from 8.2 to 8.1, and various life forms living in the ocean have greatly suffered.
The pH level is also crucial for growing plants, and therefore it greatly affects the mineral content of the foods we eat. Minerals in the ocean, soil and human body are used as buffers to maintain optimal pH levels, so when acidity rises, minerals fall.
How an Alkaline Diet Works
Here’s some background on acid/alkalinity in the human diet, plus key points about how alkaline diets can be beneficial:
Researchers believe that when it comes to the total acid load of the human diet, “there have been considerable changes from hunter-gatherer civilizations to the present.” Following the agricultural revolution and then mass industrialization of our food supply over the last 200 years, the food we eat has significantly less potassium, magnesium and chloride, along with more sodium, compared to diets of the past.
Normally, the kidneys maintain our electrolyte levels (those of calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium). When we’re exposed to overly acidic substances, these electrolytes are used to combat acidity.
According to the Journal of Environmental Health review mentioned earlier, the ratio of potassium to sodium in most people’s diets has changed dramatically. Potassium used to outnumber sodium by 10:1, however now the ratio has dropped to 1:3. People eating a “Standard American Diet” now consume three times as much sodium as potassium on average! This contributes greatly to an alkaline environment in our bodies.
Many children and adults today consume a high-sodium diet that’s very low in not only magnesium and potassium, but also antioxidants, fiber and essential vitamins. On top of that, the typical Western diet is high in refined fats, simple sugars, sodium and chloride.
All of these changes to the human diet have resulted in increased “metabolic acidosis.” In other words, the pH levels of many people’s bodies are no longer optimal. On top of this, many are suffering from low nutrient intake and problems such as potassium and magnesium deficiency.
Health Benefits
Why is an alkaline diet good for you? Alkaline foods supply important nutrients that help stop accelerated signs of aging and a gradual loss of organ and cellular functions.
As explained more below, alkaline diet benefits may include helping slow down degeneration of tissues and bone mass, which can be compromised when too much acidity robs us of key minerals.
- Protects Bone Density and Muscle Mass
Your intake of minerals plays an important role in the development and maintenance of bone structures. Research suggests that the more alkalizing fruits and vegetables someone eats, the better protection that person might have from experiencing decreased bone strength and muscle wasting as she ages, known as sarcopenia.
An alkaline diet can support bone health by balancing the ratio of minerals that are important for building bones and maintaining lean muscle mass, including calcium, magnesium and phosphate.
The diet may also help improve production of growth hormones and vitamin D absorption, which further protects bones in addition to mitigating many other chronic diseases.
- Lowers Risk for Hypertension and Stroke
One of the anti-aging effects of an alkaline diet is that it decreases inflammation and causes an increase in growth hormone production.
This has been shown to improve cardiovascular health and offer protection against common problems like high cholesterol, hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney stones, stroke and even memory loss.
- Lowers Chronic Pain and Inflammation
Studies have found a connection between an alkaline diet and reduced levels of chronic pain. Chronic acidosis has been found to contribute to chronic back pain, headaches, muscle spasms, menstrual symptoms, inflammation and joint pain.
One study conducted by the Society for Minerals and Trace Elements in Germany found that when patients with chronic back pain were given an alkaline supplement daily for four weeks, 76 of 82 patients reported significant decreases in pain as measured by the “Arhus low back pain rating scale.”
- Boosts Vitamin Absorption and Helps Prevent Magnesium Deficiency
An increase in magnesium is required for the function of hundreds of enzyme systems and bodily processes. Many people are deficient in magnesium and as a result experience heart complications, muscle pains, headaches, sleep troubles and anxiety.
Available magnesium is also required to activate vitamin D and prevent vitamin D deficiency, which is important for overall immune and endocrine functioning.
https://i0.wp.com/www.mydailyinforme...26%2C526&ssl=1
- Helps Improve Immune Function and Possibly Cancer Protection
When cells lack enough minerals to properly dispose of waste or oxygenate the body fully, the whole body suffers. Vitamin absorption is compromised by mineral loss, while toxins and pathogens accumulate in the body and weaken the immune system.
Can an alkaline diet help prevent cancer? While the topic is controversial and still unproven, research published in the British Journal of Radiology found evidence that cancerous cell death (apoptosis) was more likely to occur in an alkaline body.
Cancer prevention is believed to be associated with an alkaline shift in pH due to an alteration in electric charges and the release of basic components of proteins. Alkalinity can help decrease inflammation and the risk for diseases like cancer — plus an alkaline diet has been shown to be more beneficial for some chemotherapeutic agents that require a higher pH to work appropriately.
- Can Help You Maintain a Healthy Weight
Although the diet isn’t solely focused on fat loss, following an alkaline diet meal plan for weight loss can certainly help protect against obesity.
Limiting consumption of acid-forming foods and eating more alkaline-forming foods may make it easier to lose weight due to the diet’s ability to decrease leptin levels and inflammation. This affects both your hunger and fat-burning abilities.
Since alkaline-forming foods are anti-inflammatory foods, consuming an alkaline diet gives your body a chance to achieve normal leptin levels and feel satisfied from eating the amount of calories you really need.
If weight loss is one of your main goals, one of the best approaches to try is a keto alkaline diet, which is low in carbs and high in healthy fats.
Buy Organic Alkaline Foods
Experts feel that one important consideration in regard to eating an alkaline diet is to become knowledgeable about what type of soil your produce was grown in — since fruits and vegetables that are grown in organic, mineral-dense soil tend to be more alkalizing. Research shows that the type of soil that plants are grown in can significantly influence their vitamin and mineral content, which means not all “alkaline foods” are created equally.
The ideal pH of soil for the best overall availability of essential nutrients in plants is between 6 and 7. Acidic soils below a pH of 6 may have reduced calcium and magnesium, and soil above a pH of 7 may result in chemically unavailable iron, manganese, copper and zinc.
Soil that’s well-rotated, organically sustained and exposed to wildlife/grazing cattle tends to be the healthiest.
- Eat More Alkaline Foods and a Lot Fewer Acidic Foods
See the list below of the best alkaline diet foods, plus those to avoid.- Drink Alkaline Water
Alkaline water has a pH of 9 to 11. Distilled water is just fine to drink. Water filtered with a reverse osmosis filter is slightly acidic, but it’s still a far better option than tap water or purified bottled water.
Adding pH drops, lemon or lime, or baking soda to your water can also boosts its alkalinity. You can also make your own electrolyte drink.
- (Optional) Test Your pH Level
If you’re curious to know your pH level before implementing the tips below, you can test your pH by purchasing strips at your local health food store or pharmacy. You can measure your pH with saliva or urine.
Your second urination of the morning will give you the best results. You compare the colors on your test strip to a chart that comes with your test strip kit.
During the day, the best time to test your pH is one hour before a meal and two hours after a meal. If you test with your saliva, you want to try to stay between 6.8 and 7.2.

Best Alkaline Foods
Although you don’t have to be strict vegetarian to eat a high-alkaline diet, the diet is mostly plant-based. Here is a list of foods to emphasize most:
Fresh fruits and vegetables promote alkalinity the most. Which are the best choices; for example, are bananas alkaline? What about broccoli? Some of the top picks include mushrooms, citrus, dates, raisins, spinach, grapefruit, tomatoes, avocado, summer black radish, alfalfa grass, barley grass, cucumber, kale, jicama, wheatgrass, broccoli, oregano, garlic, ginger, green beans, endive, cabbage, celery, red beet, watermelon, figs and ripe bananas.
All raw foods: Ideally try to consume a good portion of your produce raw. Uncooked fruits and vegetables are said to be biogenic or “life-giving.” Cooking foods depletes alkalizing minerals. Increase your intake of raw foods, and try juicing or lightly steaming fruits and vegetables.
Plant proteins: Almonds, navy beans, lima beans and most other beans are good choices.
Alkaline water.
Green drinks: Drinks made from green vegetables and grasses in powder form are loaded with alkaline-forming foods and chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is structurally similar to our own blood and helps alkalize the blood.
Other foods to eat on an alkaline diet include sprouts, wheatgrass, kamut, fermented soy, like natto or tempeh, and seeds.
Acidic Foods
What foods should you avoid when following an alkaline diet eating plan? Acidic foods such as the following:
High-sodium foods: Processed foods contain tons of sodium chloride — table salt — which constricts blood vessels and creates acidity.
Cold cuts and conventional meats
Processed cereals (such as corn flakes)
Eggs
Caffeinated drinks and alcohol
Oats and whole wheat products: All grains, whole or not, create acidity in the body. Americans ingest most of their plant food quota in the form of processed corn or wheat.
Milk: Calcium-rich dairy products cause some of the highest rates of osteoporosis. That’s because they create acidity in the body! When your bloodstream becomes too acidic, it steals calcium (a more alkaline substance) from the bones to try to balance out the pH level. The best way to prevent osteoporosis is to eat lots of alkaline green leafy veggies!
Peanuts and walnuts
Pasta, rice, bread and packaged grain products
What other kinds of habits can cause acidity in your body? The biggest offenders include:
Alcohol and drug use
High caffeine intake
Antibiotic overuse
Artificial sweeteners
Chronic stress
Declining nutrient levels in foods due to industrial farming
Low levels of fiber in the diet
Lack of exercise
Excess animal meats in the diet (from non-grass-fed sources)
Excess hormones from foods, health and beauty products, and plastics
Exposure to chemicals and radiation from household cleansers, building materials, computers, cell phones and microwaves
Food coloring and preservatives
Overexercise
Pesticides and herbicides
Pollution
Poor chewing and eating habits
Processed and refined foods
Shallow breathing
Vs. Paleo Diet
The Paleo diet and alkaline diet have many things in common and a lot of the same benefits, such as lowered risk for nutrient deficiencies, reduced inflammation levels, better digestion, weight loss or management, and so on.
Some things that the two have in common include eliminating added sugars, reducing intake of pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids, eliminating grains and processed carbs, decreasing or eliminating dairy/milk intake, and increasing intake of fruits and veggies.
However, there are several important things to consider if you plan to follow the Paleo diet. The Paleo diet eliminates all dairy products, including yogurt and kefir, which can be valuable sources of probiotics and minerals for many people — plus the Paleo diet doesn’t always emphasize eating organic foods or grass-fed/free-range meat (and in moderation/limited quantities).
Additionally, the Paleo diet tends to include lots of meat, pork and shellfish, which have their own drawbacks.
Eating too many animal sources of protein in general can actually contribute to acidity, not alkalinity. Beef, chicken, cold cuts, shellfish and pork can contribute to sulfuric acid buildup in the blood as amino acids are broken down. Try to obtain the best quality animal products you can, and vary your intake of protein foods to balance your pH level best.

Risk and Side Effects
Certain foods on the “highly acidic list” might surprise you, such as eggs and walnuts. These might be acidic in your body, but don’t let that scare you away from eating them. They contain a host of other health benefits, like antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, which still makes them valuable.
The bottom line is that a healthy balance is what we’re shooting for. As far as your pH is concerned, it’s possible to become too alkaline, and having some acidic foods is both expected and healthy.
Our problem is more a matter of not taking in enough alkaline-promoting foods rather than taking in too many acids from healthy, whole foods. Eat a variety of real, whole foods (especially vegetables and fruit) and limit consumption of packaged items, and you’ll be on your way.
Final Thoughts
What is an alkaline diet? It’s a mostly plant-based diet that includes whole foods that have positive effects on pH levels of the blood and urine.
Health benefits of an alkaline diet can include better heart health, stronger bones, decreased pain, help losing weight and reversal of nutrient deficiencies.
An alkaline eating plan includes plenty of whole fruits and vegetables, raw foods, green juices, beans, and nuts.
Foods that are acidic and therefore limited on an alkaline diet include high-sodium foods, processed grains, too much meat and animal protein, added sugars, and conventional milk.

Sweet potatoes are a staple for Thanksgiving dinners, but the vegetable deserves the spotlight year-round.
Sweet potatoes contain dietary fiber, vitamins and other essential nutrients. They also offer several health benefits, such as improving digestion.
Health benefits of sweet potatoes
While some people use the terms "sweet potato" and "yam" interchangeably, the two are not related. Yams have a drier texture and are more starchy compared to sweet potatoes.
Here are some of the health benefits of sweet potatoes:
Support digestive health and bowel regularity
The dietary fiber in sweet potatoes can help prevent constipation and promote regularity, which are important for a healthy digestive tract.
Studies have also found that high dietary fiber intake can help reduce the risk of colorectal cancers.
Reduce cancer risk
Sweet potatoes are a great source of beta-carotene, a plant pigment that acts as a potent antioxidant. It is also a provitamin.
Your body converts beta-carotene into the active form of vitamin A.
Antioxidants may help reduce the risk of different types of cancer, including lung and prostate cancer.
Antioxidants like beta-carotene can help prevent cellular damage from free radicals. If levels of free radicals in your body get too high, cellular damage can occur. This can increase the risk of some conditions.
Obtaining antioxidants from dietary sources like sweet potatoes may help prevent diseases like cancer.
Support eye health
After the age of 18, the Dietary Guidelines recommend an intake of 700 milligrams (mg) of vitamin A per day for women and 900 mg per day for men. The vitamin is crucial for protecting eye health.
https://www.naturalnews.com/images/B...hLiveShows.jpg
According to the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), a baked sweet potato with the skin on contains around 1,403 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin A, or 561 percent of the daily requirement.
Vitamin A also acts as an antioxidant. Combined with other antioxidants, it can help protect you from different health conditions.
Boost immune health
One 124-gram (g) serving of sweet potato provides 12.8 mg of vitamin C. Current guidelines recommend a daily intake of 75 mg of vitamin C for adult women and 90 mg for adult men.
If you consume little or no vitamin C, you can develop scurvy. Many of the symptoms of scurvy are due to tissue problems linked to impaired collagen production.
Vitamin C also supports the immune system and enhances iron absorption. A low vitamin C intake may increase your risk of iron deficiency anemia.
Helps maintain healthy blood pressure
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), it's best to avoid eating foods that contain high amounts of added salt. Instead, you should eat more potassium-rich foods to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.
A 124 g serving of mashed sweet potato provides 259 mg of potassium or around five percent of the daily requirements for an adult. Current guidelines recommend that adults consume 4,700 mg of potassium daily.
Improve insulin sensitivity
In one 2008 study, scientists reported that an extract of white-skinned sweet potato improved insulin sensitivity in people with Type 2 diabetes.
The dietary fiber in sweet potatoes is also good for you. According to research, people who consume more fiber appear to have a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
A 124 g serving of mashed sweet potato, or around half a cup, will provide 2.5 g of fiber.
The 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest that adults aged 19 years and above consume 22.4 to 33.6 g of fiber each day, depending on their age and sex. (Related: Support healthy blood sugar levels with this delicious sweet potato and pumpkin soup.)
Cooking with sweet potatoes
When buying and cooking sweet potatoes, always check if the potato is firm with smooth, taut skin. Store sweet potatoes in a cool, dry place for no longer than three to five weeks.
Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet and creamy. Roasting sweet potatoes will bring out their natural flavor so you can eat them without toppings.
Other ways to incorporate sweet potatoes into a balanced diet include adding roasted sweet potatoes and pecans to a salad and topping it with balsamic vinegar.
You can also add sweet potato to pancakes or hash browns.

Research suggests nutrient from meat and dairy can help KILL cancer cells

https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...ass-Nature.jpg
According to a study published in Nature Journal, a nutrient found in both dairy and meat products may help protect against cancer by killing cancer cells.
Researchers from the University of Chicago also reported that the nutrient showed promise for use in cancer treatments.
While conducting the study, the research team looked for compounds that could activate a group of immune cells called CD8+ T, which are known to kill cancerous or virally infected cells.
The researchers discovered that a nutrient called trans-vaccenic acid (TVA) was able to boost the ability of CD8+ T cells to infiltrate tumors and potentially kill cancer cells. TVA is a long-chain fatty acid found in meat and dairy products from grazing animals like cows and sheep.
Additionally, the study showed that cancer patients with higher TVA levels circulating in their blood responded better to immunotherapy. This indicated that TVA shows promise as "a nutritional supplement to complement clinical treatments for cancer."
In the human body, only 20 percent of the TVA is broken down into other byproducts and the remaining 80 percent circulates in the blood.
The research team used TVA while experimenting on mice. For the study, the mice were fed a diet rich in TVA. Data revealed that the TVA "significantly reduced the tumor growth potential of melanoma and colon cancer cells compared to mice fed a control diet."
The researchers also found that the TVA diet helped boost the ability of CD8+ T cells in mice to infiltrate tumors. TVA inactivates a receptor on the surface of CD8+ T cells, then activates a cellular signaling process involved in cellular growth, differentiation and survival.
Mice with the receptors of CD8+ T cells removed lacked improved tumor-fighting ability. The researchers also studied leukemia cells and found that TVA could help enhance "the ability of an immunotherapy drug to kill leukemia cells."
Jing Chen, one of the senior authors of the study, said it was "amazing and intriguing" to observe how a single nutrient like TVA "has a very targeted mechanism on a targeted immune cell type, with a very profound physiological response at the whole organism level."
TVA's future as a potential cancer treatment
Even though the study suggests TVA has potential as a dietary supplement in cancer treatments, Chen advised against focusing too much on the food source.
He explained that because research suggests that a diet with too much red meat or dairy can have adverse effects on overall health, the study should not be taken as an excuse to follow an unhealthy diet and consume a lot of fast food like cheeseburgers or pizza.
Chen added that the focus should be on using TVA nutrient supplements and learning more about the optimized amount to be used in treating cancer. He also suggested that there could be other nutrients that would potentially be able to perform the same function as TVA. (Related: STUDY: Carotenoid in brown seaweed has potent anticancer properties.)
"There is early data showing that other fatty acids from plants signal through a similar receptor, so we believe there is a high possibility that nutrients from plants can do the same thing," said Chen.
The research team also spoke of their plans to build a more comprehensive library of nutrients circulating in the human body to learn how they affect immunity and other biological processes.
An earlier study also revealed a potential positive impact of TVA on cancer. Researchers reviewed the impact of TVA on human nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a cancer that occurs in the nasopharynx located behind the nose and above the throat.
The results showed that TVA "significantly inhibited cell proliferation" of the NPC cancer cells. The study authors suggested that using TVA could offer an advantage in treating the illness.
In an earlier study from 2014, scientists reported that TVA exerted a "direct anti-carcinogenic effect" on human breast cancer cells.
Significant scientific breakthroughs in cancer research
The recent TVA study follows other significant scientific breakthroughs in the last few years concerning cancer research.
In October 2023, researchers from the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center in Sacramento, California, reported that they discovered a biological "switch" that could make cancer cells destroy themselves.
Through a UC Davis news release the research team reported that CD95 receptors (Fas) are called death receptors. "These protein receptors reside on cell membranes. When activated, they release a signal that causes the cells to self-destruct," the researchers explained.
On the other hand, researchers from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) discovered that a flavonoid in licorice root could inhibit the progression of pancreatic cancer. The HKBU researchers also said the chemical may boost the efficacy of chemotherapy drugs used to treat the illness.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) warns that cancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S. and that it is exceeded only by heart disease.
According to the ACS, more than 1.9 million cancer cases will be diagnosed in the country in 2023. The organization expects an estimated 609,820 deaths this year, which comes to around 1,670 deaths per day.
To reduce your cancer risk, avoid harmful habits like smoking. Following a balanced diet and eating a variety of nutritious foods can also help protect against cancer.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a popular superfood ingredient for beverages, salad dressings and pickled foods. It is also often used as a natural ingredient for non-toxic cleaning solutions.
This winter, you can also use apple cider vinegar to make a natural remedy that offers several health benefits, such as promoting digestive health and boosting your immune system.
Detailed below is a recipe from herbal medicine educator Erica Kuo, who shares that taking the apple cider vinegar mixture can help you boost your immune health this winter.
Warming spicy apple cider vinegar recipe
Apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting apple juice. ACV is a popular ingredient for natural health remedies.
According to Kuo, apple cider vinegar contains yeast that can help suppress appetite. Combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise, incorporating apple cider vinegar into your routine can help you achieve your weight management goals. (Related: Prepper essentials: The many survival uses of vinegar.)
During winter, use superfoods like honey, apple cider vinegar and warming spices and herbs to create an immune-boosting tonic.
In the West, this herbal tonic is often called oxymel. The ancient Greek word "oxymeli" translates to "acid and honey." Oxymel is an herbal extraction of vinegar and raw honey.
Below is Kuo's personal recipe for a spicy apple cider vinegar mixture.
Ingredients:
- 4 to 5 cups apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup horseradish
- 1/2 cup onion
- 1/4 cup garlic
- 1/4 cup ginger slices
- 1/4 cup ginseng
- 2 to 3 chili peppers
- 1/4 to 1/3 cup honey (To taste)
Preparation:
- Chop all of the ingredients and place them in a half-gallon sterilized glass bottle. Pour in the apple cider vinegar to cover all the ingredients by about two inches.
- Cover the bottle with baking paper and place the cap on the bottle to seal it.
- Shake the bottle every day for two weeks until all the ingredients are fully submerged and mixed well with the apple cider vinegar.
- Store the bottle in the warmest cabinet in your kitchen and let it sit for one month.
- After one month, pour and filter the residue. Pour the spicy apple cider vinegar into a clean container. Add honey until you reach your desired sweetness and stir well.
- Store the spicy apple cider vinegar mixture in a cool kitchen cabinet until next spring.
How to use:
- For mild cold symptoms, add one teaspoon of the spicy apple cider vinegar mixture to one cup of warm water before drinking. Take the mixture three to four times a day.
- Add the ACV mixture to salads for seasoning.
- Add the apple cider vinegar mixture to oranges, apples, blueberries and sesame leaves to make a healthy and nutritious side dish.
- Apply the spicy apple cider vinegar mixture on sore muscles and joints to relieve discomfort.
The superfood ingredients of warming apple cider vinegar
Combining raw apple cider vinegar, which offers unique health benefits, with other superfoods like honey, is a great way to enjoy the benefits of both.
You can also make ACV oxymel to extract and ingest supportive herbs, especially pungent ones that aren't always pleasant to take on their own.
Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) promotes gastric acid secretion and appetite. When a cold or fever sets in, horseradish can help induce sweating and improve respiratory and urinary infections.
Chili pepper supports heart function, especially irregular or weak heartbeat, poor blood circulation and cold limbs. Chili peppers also help invigorate the body and can promote gastrointestinal digestion and increase gastric secretion.
Ginger warms the stomach and intestines, promotes blood circulation, improves cold hands and feet in winter, enhances immune health and strengthens the body's anti-inflammatory function.
It can also help induce sweating, reduce fever, and relieve nausea caused by certain food smells. Additionally, ginger can promote healthy bowel function.
Onions and garlic are rich in beneficial flavonoids and polyphenols, of which allicin is the most important component. Both have antiviral, antioxidant, immune health-boosting and anti-inflammatory effects.
American or Korean ginseng can help activate blood circulation and enhance the body's resilience during stressful situations.
Aside from the ingredients used in the recipe above, some herbalists may recommend adding other medicinal herbs such as rosemary, thyme or turmeric.
Rosemary can help stimulate healthy blood circulation and support optimal brain function. Because it promotes intracranial blood circulation, recent studies suggest that rosemary, like sage, can help prevent Alzheimer's disease, dementia, memory loss, loss of smell and vision loss.
Rosemary also helps boost digestive health and relieves flatulence, dizziness, headaches and fever.
Thyme can boost your immune system and has antibacterial and antimicrobial effects.
Turmeric is a natural "cleansing" ingredient that can purify the blood, aid metabolism and promote liver health. The spice can also help relieve fever, cramps and menstrual pain.
Kuo warns that if you have low blood pressure, you should reduce your consumption of garlic and onions.
If you have hypertension (high blood pressure), add cinnamon to spicy apple cider vinegar to boost its flavor and sweetness. Cinnamon and garlic can prevent blood coagulation, so skip the cinnamon and garlic if you are taking anticoagulants.
If you don't have horseradish, replace it with turmeric.
You should avoid apple cider vinegar if:
- You have frequent gastroesophageal reflux. Although herbs are added to spicy apple cider vinegar, if you have a weak gastrointestinal tract you shouldn't consume it on an empty stomach. Drink it during or after meals.
- You have high blood pressure, diabetes, or are on diuretics. Start with a small amount to gradually adapt to taking apple cider vinegar.
- You have sensitive teeth. Always rinse your mouth immediately after drinking apple cider vinegar.

Vegetable oils are about as toxic as it gets: inflammation, oxidative stress, cancer and more

https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...-Vegetable.jpg
You have probably heard about the "dirty dozen," but what about the "hateful eight?" The hateful eight refers to the eight most damaging vegetable oils that pollute the food supply and destroy human health.
Dr. Simon Goddek compiled information for an X (formerly Twitter) post about the hateful eight, which include the following vegetable oils:
1) Sunflower oil
2) Soybean oil
3) Cottonseed oil
4) Safflower oil
5) Corn oil
6) Rice bran oil
7) Grapeseed oil
8 ) Canola oil
All eight of these vegetable oils are heavily processed well beyond the point of being even remotely healthy or nutritional.
(Related: Earlier this year, researchers discovered that vegetable oils like soy and canola have "remarkable estrogenic properties.")
Vegetable oil consumption linked to early death
In his post, Dr. Goddek, a PhD scientist in biotechnology and science journalist who works as CEO of Sunfluencer, provides seven reasons why vegetable oils from the hateful eight should be avoided at all costs:
1) Vegetable oils are unnaturally extracted and processed
Unlike coconut and olive oil, both of which are extracted through simple pressing, seed oils like canola, soybean, and corn have to be extracted with heat and harsh chemical solvents such as petroleum, which in turn oxidize and convert them into health-destroying trans fats.
2) "Vegetable" is a misnomer – the hateful eight oils are toxins
They might sound nice being called "vegetable" oils and all, but the truth is that the hateful eight are industrial seed oils that, prior to the 20th century, never, ever would have been consumed as food. In 1900, almost nobody consumed vegetable oils; today, the average person consumes 70 pounds of them per year.
"This dramatic increase corresponds with a surge in chronic health issues, suggesting a link between seed oil consumption and modern diseases," Dr. Goddek explains.
3) Industrial seed oils loaded with inflammatory omega-6
Unlike saturated fats that are good for the body, industrial seed oils are mono- and polyunsaturated oils that are high in omega-6 fatty acids, especially linoleic acid, which are a precursor to pro-inflammatory eicosanoids.
"These molecules can cause chronic inflammation and contribute to autoimmune diseases," Dr. Goddek says. "The excessive consumption of Omega-6, without the balance of Omega-3, exacerbates these health issues."
4) Vegetable oils cause oxidative stress, cancer
Linoleic acid and other omega-6 fatty acids create a host of health problems in the body, not the least of which include oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and genetic damage. This in turn can lead to the growth of cancer tumors with some studies suggesting that diets rich in vegetable oils come with a 400 percent increased risk of metastasis.
5) Vegetable oils contribute to death
A seven-year study found that consuming vegetable oils leads to a 62 percent increased risk of all-cause mortality, which is higher than the death risk associated with heavy smoking or obesity.
6) Consume vegetable oils, destroy your heart
The Minnesota Coronary Experiment further found that consuming vegetable oils like corn oil and margarine increases heart attack risk by 86 percent, despite vegetable oil consumers having lower cholesterol levels.
7) Vegetable oils increase cardiovascular death risk by 700 percent
Another study called the MARGARIN study found that consuming vegetable oils increases one's risk of suffering a stroke, heart attack, or cardiovascular death by 700 percent compared to people who consume more heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Study shows EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL can promote weight loss, reduce body fat and improve liver health

Coconut oil is known for its many beneficial properties, which include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Highly moisturizing and soothing to the skin, coconut oil is also widely used as an ingredient in many skincare products.
In recent years, many people have begun including "extra virgin" (unrefined and typically cold-pressed) coconut oil (EVCO) in their diets because of its reported weight loss benefits. EVCO is a rich source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), a healthy type of fat that is said to not only provide readily available and longer lasting energy than carbohydrates, but also promote fat-burning.
However, experts are still divided on the matter, citing the lack of larger, more comprehensive studies on the weight loss potential of MCTs and coconut oil's naturally high calorie content.
But according to a recent study published in the Journal of Functional Foods, regular consumption of EVCO can lead to weight loss instead of weight gain so long as intake is kept below 10 percent of one's total daily calorie intake, as recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
In addition, the study reported that aside from inducing weight loss, EVCO helped improve lipid metabolism and reduced fat accumulation in the liver of rats with diet-induced obesity. (Related: Study shows cherries can promote weight loss, boost heart health and treat gout.)
Phenolic compounds and MCTs in EVCO work in synergy to combat obesity
To investigate the anti-obesity effect of EVCO, the researchers divided 32 rats into four groups: two groups were fed a normal diet, with one group receiving 3,000 milligrams (mg) per kilogram (kg) body weight of EVCO daily for 16 weeks. Meanwhile, the other two groups were fed a cafeteria diet which consists of unhealthy foods commonly consumed by humans (e.g., hotdogs, muffins, etc.). Likewise, only one of the two groups received EVCO daily for 16 weeks.
The researchers reported that the obese rats exhibited hyperphagia, or insatiable hunger, and consumed almost three times more nutrients and calories than the healthy rats. But daily supplementation with EVCO helped reversed changes associated with obesity, such as body weight gain, high adiposity (body fat accumulation) index and increased abdominal circumference. (Related: Study shows ginger is a potent natural anti-obesity agent.)
The researchers proposed that these anti-obesity effects may be linked to an increase in energy expenditure caused by the MCTs in EVCOs, such as caprylic acid, capric acid and lauric acid. Because these MCTs are directly transported to the liver where they are utilized immediately for energy production, they are not stored as fat inside the body and don't contribute to weight gain or adiposity.
The researchers also noted that obese rats had larger adipocyte (fat cells) areas than healthy rats, but supplementation with EVCO reduced the size of these areas significantly. The researchers attributed this once again to MCTs, which are known to decrease the expression of genes that promote the accumulation of fat tissue. (Related: MCTs help prevent cardiovascular disease by improving the metabolism of cholesterol.)
On the other hand, the researchers credited the phenolic compounds in EVCO with improving insulin sensitivity in obese rats. These phenolic compounds, which include rutin, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, salicylic acid, quercetin, p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid and myricetin, have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
The researchers explained that chronic inflammation caused by the presence of excess body fat is a major contributor to insulin resistance. Studies have shown that pro-inflammatory signaling molecules can inhibit insulin signal transduction, resulting in a decreased response to insulin by cells. But the anti-inflammatory activities of the phenolic compounds in EVCO can help suppress obesity-induced inflammation, thus improving insulin sensitivity in obese rats.
Meanwhile, the synergistic effects of the MCTs and phenolic compounds in EVCO helped prevent hepatic steatosis in obese rats by reducing the deposition of fats, cholesterol and triglycerides in the liver. According to the researchers, the positive influence of these EVCO components on lipid metabolism in the liver led to the mobilization of fat, cholesterol and liver triglycerides into the blood, consequently increasing the excretion of fecal cholesterol.
Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that consumption of EVCO according to USDA guidelines could help promote weight loss and improve liver function, lipid metabolism and blood sugar control in people with obesity, thanks to the synergy between the MCTs and phenolic compounds in EVCO. A clinical trial involving adult men with obesity also reported that EVCO can improve a person's lipid profile by increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good cholesterol" levels.

Report: Ditching ALCOHOL can reduce your risk of CANCER

Ditching alcoholic drinks and going sober can reduce the risk of certain cancers, according to a new report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
The report published in the New England Journal of Medicine said there is sufficient evidence to classify alcohol as a carcinogenic substance for its ability to cause various kinds of cancers. These include oral, pharyngeal, laryngeal, esophageal, liver, colorectal and breast cancer. Related: Alcohol abuse leads to cancer, strokes, heart disease, brain damage.)
The report also pointed out that ethanol, the main form of alcohol comprising alcoholic beverages, is the most popular psychoactive substance in the world. Given this, the IARC – which is under the World Health Organization (WHO) – stated that "no safe amount of alcohol consumption for cancers and health can be established."
A study published in Lancet Oncology also attested to this finding. According to the paper, alcohol contributed to more than 740,000 new cancer cases in 2020.
Based on the study, male cancers accounted for three-fourths of alcohol-related cancers. Moreover, 98,300 of the 172,600 alcohol-related cancer cases diagnosed in women – more than half – were breast cancer.
Dr. Harriet Rumgay, the study's lead author and a researcher at the IARC, said their paper "highlighted the contribution of even relatively low levels of alcohol to the risk of new cancer cases."
"Fewer than one in three Americans recognize alcohol as a cause of cancer. The study showed that at least four percent of the world's diagnosed cases of breast, colon, esophageal, larynx, liver, mouth and rectal cancers in 2020 can be attributed to alcohol drinking."
Carina Ferreira Borges of the WHO's Regional Office for Europe said in a Jan. 3 news release: "We cannot talk about a so-called safe level of alcohol use. It doesn't matter how much you drink."
"The risk to the drinker's health starts from the first drop of any alcoholic beverage. The only thing that we can say for sure is that the more you drink, the more harmful it is. In other words, the less you drink, the safer it is."
How drinking alcohol increases a person's cancer risk
According to the University of Texas' MD Anderson Cancer Center, there are a few biological pathways that lead from alcohol consumption to a cancer diagnosis – which the IARC report confirmed.
- DNA damage. Ethanol, which is found in alcoholic beverages, is the only type of alcohol intended for consumption. Your body breaks this down to form a known carcinogen called acetaldehyde – a compound that damages DNA and stops your cells from repairing the damage or triggers DNA mutations – allowing cancerous cells to grow.
- Oxidative stress. The process of breaking down alcohol creates free radicals that cause oxidative stress by damaging cells, DNA lipids and proteins, explained Dr. Irene Orlow of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
- Hormonal changes. Alcohol increases the levels of hormones that signal cells to grow and divide, including estrogen – the more cells divide, the more chances there are for something to go wrong and for cancer to develop.
- Malabsorption. Alcohol also reduces your body's ability to absorb certain cancer-specific nutrients, including vitamins A, B9 (folate or folic acid), C, D and E.
In a separate study from March 2019, British researchers found that the risk of cancer from drinking one bottle of wine a week was equivalent to smoking 10 cigarettes a week for women and five cigarettes for men. The study authors also suggested that the lifetime risk of cancer for non-smoking men and women would increase by one percent for men and 1.4 percent for women if each drank a bottle of wine every week.
According to the researchers' estimate, drinking three bottles of wine per week could increase lifetime cancer risk by almost two percent in men (roughly eight cigarettes per week) and 3.6 percent in women (roughly 28 cigarettes per week).

LAWSUIT: Weight loss drug Ozempic blamed for causing woman to develop PERMANENT diarrhea, tooth loss
01/24/2024 // Ethan Huff // 270 Views
Tags: badhealth, badmedicine, Big Pharma, Dangerous Medicine, deception, diarrhea, digestion, eli lilly, gastroparesis, gut health, insanity, lawsuit, Mounjaro, Novo Nordisk, Ozempic, pharmaceutical fraud, Prescription drugs, Wegovy, women's health
https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...ea-problem.jpg
Patients across America are suing drug giant Novo Nordisk over the weight loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, which can allegedly cause crippling paralysis and forever diarrhea.
Injured patients say they experienced extreme side effects from the two drugs. Wegovy, by the way, is the only one of the two drugs that is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for weight loss – Ozempic was approved by the FDA to treat type-2 diabetes, though some doctors prescribe it off-label for weight management.
Though not technically the same medication, Ozempic and Wegovy both contain the same active ingredient: semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist linked to gastroparesis, also known as paralysis of the stomach.
"The condition, which can be life-threatening, causes a build-up of food in the gut and symptoms include nausea, vomiting and severe pain," one report explains about what Wegovy and Ozempic are doing to patients.
More than a dozen lawsuits have been filed against Novo Nordisk since last November by patients who took one or the other of the two drugs and were later diagnosed with gastroparesis. Some of them reported suffering "life-threatening" bowel injuries and now face lifelong consequences for their error.
In one of the cases, a 23-year-old woman named Brea Hand required five separate hospital visits before doctors finally figured out that she had developed gastroparesis from the drugs. In another case, Zakareeya Gregory had to be hospitalized for four weeks for the same complications.
All of the lawsuits accuse Novo Nordisk of failing to properly warn on the drugs' packaging about the risk of gastroparesis.
(Related: Another thing Ozempic did is cause a woman to vomit nonstop for years on end – "I wish I never touched it.")
Mounjaru by Eli Lilly also destroying women's digestion, bowels, say victims
Another similar drug called Mounjaro, manufactured by Eli Lilly, that is prescribed for diabetes works similarly to Ozempic and Wegovy, and is also prescribed off-label for weight loss. Like Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly faces charges of improper warnings about gastroparesis.
In yet another case, a woman who took both Ozempic and Mounjaru says after she was diagnosed with gastroparesis, she started vomiting so severely and so often that her teeth actually fell out of her mouth.
Another woman was diagnosed with a "life-threatening bowel injury" after using Ozempic and had to undergo surgery lasting nearly nine hours. Doctors told her following the procedure that she will now be in pain "for the rest of her life" and "will never have a solid bowel movement again."
In still another case, a woman who used Wegovy claims she was diagnosed with "severe gastroparesis" that resulted in her having to be hospitalized for symptoms that included going for an entire week without a single bowel movement.
All in all, some 40 cases have been filed in federal courts across America over these and other related cases. Attorneys are also said to be reviewing thousands more cases, many of which will be grouped together into multidistrict litigation (MDL) that will be centralized and settled before a single judge.
Attorney Cameron Stephenson of Levin Papantonio Rafferty told one media outlet that his firm currently has about 100 clients who were diagnosed with gastroparesis after taking one of the three aforementioned drugs. Stephenson says there are thousands more similar cases under review.
A bulk of the legal action centers around patients who were "medically diagnosed with obstruction or gastroparesis and required emergency treatment or hospital intervention," according to Stephenson, who also threw in the disclaimer that he has "no doubt" the drugs are still highly effective for some patients.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, according to the World Health Organization. Cancer refers to a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells in any organ or tissue of the body.
Hallmark features of cancer include the ability to evade apoptosis (programmed cell death), induce angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow), replicate limitlessly, produce growth signals that are self-sufficient, be insensitive to anti-growth signals, invade nearby tissue and metastasize (spread to another part of the body).
Fortunately, studies show that naturally occurring bioactive compounds from plants, also known as phytochemicals, can help reduce your risk of cancer. Many of these potent compounds also have the potential to be used in anticancer therapy. (Related: Plants against cancer: Eighteen 100% natural phytochemicals that prevent and treat cancers.)
Phytochemicals with known anticancer activities
Here are 12 natural cancer-fighting agents (in no particular order) and their plant sources:
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)
Research published in the journal Nutrients has found that a potent compound in green tea called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) can effectively stop the proliferation of human colorectal cancer cells. Cell culture studies show that EGCG works by arresting the cell cycle (a series of events that include cell growth and division) and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells.
Salidroside and Rosavin
A study published in the journal Current Pharmacology Reports also found that the herb Rhodiola rosea (golden root) contains two potent anticancer compounds, namely, salidroside and rosavin, that can inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in various human cancer cell lines. These include bladder cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, glioma (brain tumor), sarcoma (cancer of the bones and soft tissues) and lung cancer cells.
Curcumin
A study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences reported that curcumin, the active compound in turmeric (Curcuma longa) exhibits unique yet potent anticancer activities. Curcumin is said to work against breast cancer, lung cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, prostate cancer and brain tumors by inhibiting the proliferation and invasion of tumors, suppressing various cell signaling pathways and inducing apoptosis.
Fucoxanthin
The marine carotenoid, fucoxanthin, is a promising bioactive compound for cancer therapy, according to a study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. The study reported that fucoxanthin, which is found in brown seaweed, induces cell cycle arrest, apoptosis and/or autophagy in several cancer cell lines, such as lymphoma, leukemia, melanoma, sarcoma, lung, liver, gastric, colorectal, bladder, prostate, breast, cervical and neural cancer cell lines.
Punicalagin
Punicalagin is an ellagitannin found in the skin of pomegranates. In addition to antioxidant, anti-atherosclerotic and liver-protective properties, punicalagin also boasts antiproliferative and cancer-preventive activities. A study published in the journal Nutrients reported that punicalagin in pomegranate peel can suppress cancer cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in promyelocytic leukemia cells, colon cancer cells and glioma cells.
Beta-sitosterol
Beta-sitosterol is one of the most abundant plant sterols (phytosterols) in plants. Known for its potential to reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) levels, beta-sitosterol can be found in foods like rice bran, wheat germ, peanuts and soybeans, and in botanicals like saw palmetto, rye grass pollen, pygeum and stinging nettles.
A study published in the journal Frontiers in Oncology reported that beta-sitosterol exerts an anti-tumor effect on multiple malignant tumors, such as breast, gastric, lung, kidney, pancreatic and prostate cancers. It can also prevent the proliferation, invasion and metastasis of cancer cells and induce cancer cell apoptosis.
Genistein
According to epidemiological studies, high intake of the flavonoid known as genistein can decrease your risk of various human cancers. Genistein is said to work at the molecular level and stop cancer growth by activating tumor suppressor genes. Genistein can also trigger oxidative stress in cancer cells long enough to induce apoptosis. Genistein is a plant estrogen (phytoestrogen) commonly found in soy-based foods, such as soy milk, tofu, tempeh and miso. (Related: Healing cancer with food: Some recommendations.)
Saponins
Saponins are naturally occurring plant compounds that are known for their soap-forming nature. According to a study published in the journal Pathophysiology, different saponins have attracted scientific interest due to their anticancer activities, which include arresting the cell cycle, inhibiting cancer cell invasion and inducing apoptosis or autophagy (conserved degradation of cells). Some saponins have also been found to control the expression of proteins involved in cancer progression and metastasis.
The most abundant edible sources of saponins are legumes, such as alfalfa, lentils, chickpeas, lupins, kidney beans and soybeans. Triterpenoid saponins can also be found in sunflower seeds, ginseng root, tea leaves, licorice root, spinach seeds, quinoa and sugar beets.
Anthocyanins
A class of water-soluble flavonoids known as anthocyanins has also been reported to fight cancer effectively. Anthocyanins, which are blue, red and purple plant pigments, are highly abundant in many fruits and vegetables.
According to a study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, anthocyanins are capable of inhibiting the transformation of cells into cancerous cells, suppressing cancer cell proliferation, arresting cancer cell cycle at different phases of cell division, promoting the expression of anticancer genes and downregulating the expression of pro-cancer genes.
Corilagin
The gallotannin known as corilagin was first isolated from divi-divi (Caesalpinia coriaria), a tree native to the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and some parts of South America. It has also been found in the Alchornea glandulosa (amor seco) tree, which is native to South America, and the leaves of pomegranate shrubs.
According to a study published in the journal Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, corilagin has potent anti-inflammatory, liver-protective and anti-tumor properties that make it a promising therapeutic agent for clinical use. In cell culture studies, corilagin showed toxicity against hepatocellular carcinoma and ovarian cancer cells but not normal/healthy cells, suggesting that this anti-tumor agent may be a safer option for cancer therapy than conventional chemotherapeutic agents.
Sulforaphane
A sulfur-containing compound found exclusively in cruciferous vegetables, sulforaphane has been shown to reduce a person's cancer risk by multiple studies. According to a review published in the journal Frontiers in Oncology, sulforaphane can protect against cancer by inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells, arresting the cell cycle and enhancing the process of apoptosis. Meanwhile, sulforaphane derivatives have been shown to downregulate enzymes involved in cancer cell proliferation and angiogenesis.
To get high amounts of sulforaphane, include broccoli sprouts in your diet. Broccoli sprouts are the most abundant source of this anti-cancer compound and contain 20 to 50 times more sulforaphane than mature broccoli. (Related: Phytonutrients: Natural compounds in plant foods that help lower cancer risk.)
Plants are a veritable source of natural chemicals that can fight cancer just as fiercely as modern pharmaceuticals but without causing serious adverse effects. And the good news is, most of these cancer fighters are present in a wide variety of organic produce. To enjoy the anticancer benefits of these phytonutrients, add plenty of fruits and vegetables to your diet and make healthy lifestyle choices to maintain good overall health and prevent cancer.

Consumer Reports: PLASTICS CHEMICALS are present in many popular foods
01/31/2024 // Olivia Cook // 680 Views

https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...d-Chemical.jpg
A report by the New York-based Consumer Reports (CR) has found that chemicals in plastics are present in many popular food items.
The organization examined 85 food items for plastic chemicals such as phthalates and bisphenols – with the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) as one example of the latter. It found that 79 percent of foods tested – roughly four in five – contained bisphenols. Meanwhile, almost 99 percent of food items tested contained phthalates.
CR tested a variety of food items including "prepared meals; fruits and vegetables; milk and other dairy products; baby food; fast food; meat; and seafood – all packaged in cans, pouches, foil, or other material." It found that phthalate levels differed within specific items from food brands – meaning no single brand has completely safe food.
According to CR, phthalates are chemicals used to make plastic more durable and flexible. Meanwhile, bisphenols are used to manufacture polycarbonate plastics that are lighter, stronger and more resistant to impact and fractures than regular plastic.
Nevertheless, the nonprofit noted that phthalates and BPA are known endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which have scientifically been found to affect hormonal balance and change the development and function of hormone-dependent structures of the reproductive systems. (Related: Fetal exposure to BPA has now reached 100 percent; Plastics chemical contaminating everyone.)
Scientists have linked EDCs, like phthalates and BPA, among others, to numerous negative human health outcomes, including, but not limited to the following:
- Abnormalities in sex organs or genital malformations
- Altered nervous system function, causing widespread disruption of hormone receptors, enzymes and nerve signals
- Cardiovascular problems – a reduction in the level of adiponectin (a hormone in your fat tissue that helps with insulin sensitivity and inflammation), which may accelerate atherosclerosis (the hardening or thickening of the arteries)
- Certain cancers – even low doses of EDCs have been found to cause changes in cancer cells that could lead to its progression, such as in breast cancer cells
- Changes in sperm quality, sperm counts and compromised fertility
- Compromised immune function, increasing the susceptibility to diseases
- Diabetes – attributed to altered adrenal, gonadal and thyroid functions
- Early puberty – EDCs change metabolic programming during fetal and early childhood development, resulting in alternations in the metabolic and peripheral hormones associated with the onset of puberty
Phthalates are everywhere
High levels of phthalates were found in several brands of supermarket foods such as Del Monte, Chicken of the Sea, Gerber and General Mills – which owns the Annie's, Yoplait and Cheerios brands. Those from fast food chains such as Burger King, McDonald's and Wendy's also had elevated phthalate levels.
Reuters sent a request for comment to the brands mentioned in the CR report. Burger King, Wendy's and General Mills did not immediately respond to the news outlet.
Chicken of the Sea and Del Monte said they "do not add phthalates to their food and receive similar assurances from their suppliers." Both companies nevertheless acknowledged that "phthalates are widespread in the environment." Meanwhile, Gerber and McDonald’s said they "follow regulatory requirements – requiring rigorous testing for chemicals during packaging."
"Those problems typically develop slowly, sometimes over decades. Unlike a plane crash, where everyone dies at once, the people who die from these die over many years," explained pediatrician Dr. Philip Landrigan, director of the Global Public Health and the Common Good Program at Boston College.
Early efforts to limit plastic chemicals in food focused on packaging options. CR noted, however, that "phthalates can also get in food from the plastic used in the gloves; conveyor belts and tubing used during food processing; and … via contaminated soil and water."
"Determining an acceptable level for these chemicals in food is tricky. Regulators in the U.S. and Europe have set thresholds for only BPA and a few phthalates. None of the foods CR tested had amounts exceeding those limits."

Foraging tips: 17 Wild foods to forage for your winter stockpile
02/02/2024 // Zoey Sky // 640 Views

Food prices have gone up by at least 15 percent from October 2021 to October 2023. As a self-sufficient prepper, this means finding different ways to save on your grocery bills without sacrificing taste and nutrient value. If you don't want to spend money, winter foraging is one way to add more supplies to your prepper pantry for free. (h/t to SimpleFamilyPreparedness.com)
There are many benefits of learning how to forage, such as getting free food in the form of wild edibles. Foraging can also be fun for the whole family. It's also a good way to exercise, and foraging is one way to reconnect with nature.
And while foraging in winter seems harder compared to foraging in late summer, there are still plenty of wild edibles to harvest once you know where to look.
When SHTF, knowing how to forage year-round can also help you find food after the stores run out of supplies.
Winter is the hardest time to find wild food, but it’s not impossible. When you’re foraging, only harvest plants and mushrooms that you are sure are safe to eat. Don't go foraging without taking some classes or reviewing reference materials to avoid poisoning yourself and your family if you make a mistake.
Avoid these dangerous mistakes by using detailed guides or signing up for foraging or survival classes. You can also forage with a more experienced prepper so they can teach you as you harvest.
Whether you're winter foraging or hunting for wild edibles in spring or summer, you should always forage in a way that’s good for the environment. This means only taking what you need and leaving enough food for wildlife and future harvests.
Try following the rule of thirds. This means only taking a third, leaving one-third for the wildlife and leaving one-third to grow back or reproduce.
If you're not sure where to start, harvest fruits, nuts and leaves. Nuts and fruits can generally be harvested in abundance without causing any harm. Meanwhile, roots, shoots and tubers require the proper understanding of plants and their life cycles to ensure a sustainable harvest.
Acorns
Oak trees drop lots of acorns, and they're one of the most overlooked wild edibles to forage in winter. You can find them on the forest floor or lurking beneath the snow cover around the base of the oak tree.
Once you get rid of the tannins, acorns can be turned into flour.
Beechnuts
Beechnuts are tiny but full of flavor. You can eat them raw or roasted.
Beechnuts can be collected in the fall to use throughout winter. They’re full of fat and protein, making them a great snack when it's cold.
Chickweed
Chickweed is a hardy winter plant that grows almost anywhere. It should be ready to harvest when the snow melts.
Chicory root
Chicory root has a strong, earthy flavor and can be used as a coffee substitute when roasted and ground.
Crabapples
Crabapples get sweeter and full of pectin as winter goes on and they are great in desserts, jellies and syrups.
Many crabapple varieties stay on the tree into winter, and the fruit gets sweeter with time.
Crabapples can survive cold temperatures better than regular apples and you can usually find them clinging onto their branches well into the winter season.
Cranberries
Wild cranberries can be foraged from late fall to early winter, especially in boggy areas. You can also find some under the snow in winter.
The berries are tart and add a vibrant flavor to dishes, from sauces to baked goods.
Daisy greens
Daisy greens are a nutritious and edible wintergreen. They’re a bit bitter, like other leafy greens, and are great for winter salads.
Dandelions
Dandelions have edible leaves, roots and flowers.
In winter, dandelion leaves are milder. The leaves are great in salads or cooked like spinach.
Goosefoot seeds
Goosefoot or wild quinoa produces seeds that are a great alternative to expensive quinoa often sold in stores.
Goosefoot seeds are high in protein and can be used in various dishes, from stews to wraps.
Hop hornbeam seeds
Hop hornbeam trees produce nutty seeds. Pick these seeds and use them like you would grains or nuts in different dishes.
The seeds are great in bread or as cereal. Lightly toasting them brings out their flavor even more, so add them to give salads or homemade granola a natural crunch. (Related: Tips for responsibly and safely foraging and hunting for food.)
Jerusalem artichoke
Jerusalem artichokes or sunchokes are tubers that you can dig throughout winter. They are nutty and sweet, and a versatile ingredient.
Roast Jerusalem artichokes to make a caramelized treat. You can also boil and mash them, or slice them raw into salads for some crunch. Jerusalem artichokes are delicious and a natural source of iron and potassium.
Nettles
Nettles are a winter favorite, especially in milder climates.
Nettles are full of vitamins and minerals. You can use them like other tender greens once you cook them to remove the sting.
Use nettles for soups, stews or as steamed greens.
Oyster mushrooms
In winter, oyster mushrooms will grow on the sides of trees and are easy to spot because of their unique shape.
Oyster mushrooms are tender, slightly sweet and full of protein and vitamins. Serve oyster mushrooms sauteed, add them to various dishes like stir-fries, or use them to make creamy pasta sauces.
Pine nuts
Pine nuts have a buttery flavor, especially when toasted. Add pine nuts to pasta, pesto or salads.
Pine nuts are also a good source of energy and healthy fats and they are a great addition to your winter diet. However, you should make sure you’re picking from trees that are safe to eat from.
Pine nuts are an early winter forage item because squirrels love them and will gather as many as they can find before winter sets in.
Purple dead nettle
Purple dead nettle is easy to spot. Just look for its purple tops, even in winter.
Purple dead nettle is a little bitter but it mixes well with other greens.
Dry it out for homemade smoothies. You can also use purple dead nettle to make a healing salve that can help with inflammation and allergies.
Purple dead nettle can also be used to dye wool a beautiful spring green.
Watercress
You can find watercress growing near streams and rivers.
Watercress adds a fresh, peppery flavor to any dish. You can often find it all year round and is high in nutrients.
Watercress is remarkably spicy, making it a great green for winter meals like soups and stews.
Wild violet
Like other common plants, wild violets are beautiful and a versatile ingredient. Wild violet leaves and flowers are edible and will add a lovely dash of color and a sweet, floral flavor to winter salads or desserts.
If you love to bake, use wild violet flowers for decorating cakes and other desserts. Use the heart-shaped leaves to add a mild, sweet taste to salad greens.

Vintage Lemon Drizzle Cake
SATURDAY 3 FEBRUARY 2024
I usually like to have a cake in the cake-tin at the weekend. I like to relax and indulge in a spot of cake and a cup of hot tea while I do it, plus you never know when company is going to drop by. Its always nice to have a cake in the tin when they do.
This cake recipe I am sharing with you today was adapted from the baking book entitled, Vintage Cakes, tremendously good cakes for sharing and giving, by Jane Brocket. It is a British baking book.
I have several of Jane's books. One of them is a knitting/crocheting/homemaking book, which I just love. Her life is filled with joy and color, which is how I like my life to be also. Just because someone lives on their own that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy a bit of color.
It may look like the cake has sunk in the middle, but that is just where the lemon syrup has collected most of all, and there is a dip in the plate that it is sitting on. I can assure you that it is not fallen in the least, but that middle part is sooooo scrumptiously moist and lemony delicious! It is my favorite part.
Most modern lemon drizzle cakes are baked as loaves and will have a crunchy lemon drizzle on top. Those are mightly tasty for sure. Still others are like this one, baked in a single round layer and topped with a sticky lemon syrup.
The lemon syrup is applied while both are still warm, the cake and the syrup. The syrup soaks into the cake, leaving a lovely sticky surface, which is much closer to the vintage lemon drizzle cakes of yesteryear.

This is not a large cake. Only one 8-inch layer, but what it lacks in stature is more than made up by taste. This is a beautiful lemon cake with both lemon zest and juice being in the cake batter itself.
That sticky soaking syrup contains the juice of two whole lemons which gives it a lovely mouth puckeringly sweet lemon finish.
I enjoyed a slice warm, before it even cooled entirely. I could not wait. It was beautiful served with a hot cup of Forever Nuts by David's Tea. The perfect combination.
You just cannot beat a nice slice of a good Lemon Drizzle Cake, and this is one of the finest I have ever baked. Thank you Jane!

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE VINTAGE LEMON DRIZZLE CAKE
As I always say, simple, everyday, baking cupboard ingredients, and not a lot of them. This is citrus season so why not make the most of the fresh lemons that are available to us in the shops at the moment!
- 3./4 cup + 2/3 tsp (175g) butter, at room temperature
- 3/4 cup (175g) granulated sugar
- 3 large free range eggs
- 1 1/2 cups + 1 heaped TBS (175g) self raising flour
- the finely grated zest of 2 unwaxed or well scrubbed lemons
- the juice of 1/2 lemon
For the soaking syrup:
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
- the juice of two lemons
https://blogger.googleusercontent.co...20-%20Copy.JPG
It really is important that your ingredients are all at room temperature. This will ensure you the best cake possible when it comes to your finished cake! Do scrub your lemons, unwaxed or not, to remove any wax, or insect debris.
If you don't have self raising flour, it is very easy to make your own. For every cup of flour, simply measure out the flour and add 1 1/2 tsp of baking powder and 1/4 tsp of salt. I make mine up 3 to 4 cups worth at a time. Its very easy to make and always gets used up.
Most British cake recipes rely on self raising flour.

HOW TO MAKE VINTAGE LEMON DRIZZLE CAKE
If you follow the directions exactly and make sure all of your ingredients are at room temperature, you are in for a real treat!
Preheat the oven to 350*F/180*C/ gas mark 4. Butter an 8-inch round cake tin really well and then line the bottom with baking paper. (I use a loose bottom tin.)
Cream the butter and sugar together until pale in color and quite fluffy Beat in the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Beat in the lemon zest and lemon juice until well incorporated.
Sift the flour over top and then fold it in with a large metal spoon, gently but thoroughly. Spoon into the prepared cake tin, leveling the top off with the back of a spoon.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, until risen and golden brown, and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
https://blogger.googleusercontent.co...20-%20Copy.JPGhttps://blogger.googleusercontent.co...20-%20Copy.JPG
While the cake is baking make the lemon syrup. Combine the lemon juice and sugar in a small saucepan. Heat gently, without stirring, until the sugar melts into the lemon juice. Simmer over medium heat, without stirring until the mixture becomes syrupy.
Remove, set aside and keep warm.
When the cake it done, remove it from the oven and using a skewer or clean knitting needle poke holes in the top of the cake, about 12 to 15. Pour the warm syrup evenly over top of the cake, allowing it to soak in.
Leave the cake to cool completely in the tin before removing. Peel the paper off the bottom and cut into wedges to serve.
This will keep for several days if wrapped in greaseproof paper and stored in an airtight container.
https://blogger.googleusercontent.co...20-%20Copy.JPG
Simply put, this was a lovely cake. I enjoyed a wedge of it while it was still slightly warm and took two slices over to my sister for her and my dad to enjoy. I loved the sticky topping. Soft cake, sticky topping, a beautiful combination.
It had a lovely delicate lemon flavor and that sticky topping added a lovely sweet/tart finish. Perfectly at home with a nice hot cup of tea, herbal or otherwise. I highly recommend!

If you are a fan of the teatime cake, and who doesn't like a bit of cake with their tea, you might also want to check out the following teatime cake recipes!
VINTAGE CONDENSED MILK FRUITED SCONE LOAF - This recipe for this Fruited Scone Loaf hails from the 1950's. The original recipe called it a cake, but it is a very dense and crumbly cake, much more like a scone and so I have relabeled it as a Scone Loaf. Filled with lots of sticky raisins and candied cherries, it is lovely served thinly sliced and buttered with hot cups of tea.
MARMALADE CAKE - This is a beautiful teatime cake, filled with little bits of sticky orange marmalade. Moist and delicious, flavored with orange and topped with an orange glace icing. The marmalade adds just a hint of bittersweet in contrast to the normal sugar which is used. Not at all unpleasant. This is one of my favorite teatime cakes.

A deliciously moist cake with a delicate lemon flavor, and a lush lemon sugar drizzle glaze. For this cake the glaze is sticky, not crunchy. You might also be tempted to call this a lemon syrup cake. Inactive time reflect the time needed for the cake to cool in the tin before cutting.

Copycat Dolly Parton's Stampede Soup (small batch)
THURSDAY 8 FEBRUARY 2024
Today I am sharing a copycat recipe for Dolly Parton's Stampede Soup. I found the recipe on Dinner 321. It looked simple to make and delicious. I like simple and delicious. That is just how I roll if possible.
I had more than enough complicated cooking when I cooked at the Manor. In my retirement I no longer want to work my fingers to the bone unless I really have to. I can do it if required, but I prefer not to if I don't have to!
https://www.alipac.us/image/svg xml;...8 Cjwvc3ZnPgo=

Supposedly this is a copycat recipe which is said to taste very much like Dolly's at the Dixie Stampede. I have never been there so I cannot say for sure. I am a huge fan of Dolly's and have been since I was a girl.
But I have never travelled into the states any further south than Boston. I used to wish I could go to Nashville, but I think my travelling days are long over. I no longer have wander-lust in my bones.
When I was growing up I used to dream about travelling the world. We had an Encyclopedia that had Geography books included with it. I used to devour them and dream about visiting all of the places in its pages.
My parents could not afford to take us travelling. We did not get to go on summer holidays like some families did. I remember the people next door to us having a station wagon and there were travel decals on the back windows of all the places they had travelled to.
I spent a lot of time ogling those decals and thinking about all of the fantastic things they might have seen! My favorite one was the one from Disney World. Oh how I would have loved to have been able to go to Disney World! That would have been a dream come true.
As an adult I have travelled quite a bit and I have enjoyed all of my travels, but most of them have been on the other side of the pond! In any case, this is a delicious soup. I did take the liberty of small-batching it so that it only makes 2 hearty servings. Simply double it if you want more!
WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE COPYCAT DOLLY PARTON'S STAMPEDE SOUP
Very simple ingredients and not a lot of them. The vegetables can be easily adapted to whatever cooked vegetables you have to hand. I love recipes like this!
- 2 TBS (29g) butter
- 2 TBS (16g) all purpose, plain flour
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder (not salt)
- 1/2 tsp onion powder (not salt
- 1/4 tsp white pepper
- 1/4 tsp kosher salt
- 8 ounces (1 cup/240ml) good quality chicken stock
- 1/2 (15 oz/425g) tin of mixed vegetables, drained (save the other half for another purpose.)
- 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
- 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream
I used salted butter as that is the only butter I keep in my house. I still had to add a bit of salt at the end. It all depends I suppose on how salty you like things. My chicken stock was not overly salty either.
Do make sure you use garlic and onion powders and not the salts. The powders give you much more flavor without adding excess saltiness.
I am sure that black pepper would work as well as white pepper. I like the distinct flavor of white pepper and am quite happy to use that.
You can use any cooked vegetable. A can of veg-all drained works, as do cooked frozen vegetables, or any leftover cooked vegetable that you happen to have on hand.
The original recipe called for half and half. I did not have any of that. I think it is what is called single cream in the U.K. I used half milk and half heavy cream and the results were delicious.
HOW TO MAKE DOLLY PARTON'S STAMPEDE SOUP (COPYCAT)https://www.alipac.us/image/svg xml;...8 Cjwvc3ZnPgo=
This has to be one of the easiest soups to make. It went together in a flash and I was eating it within 15 minutes tops! I love it when that happens!
Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour, garlic and onion powders, white pepper and salt. Cook and stir for about a minute.
Whisk in the chicken stock, whisking constantly. Cook until the mixture bubble and thickens. Add the vegetables and simmer on low for 5 minutes.
At the end of that time mash the vegetables into the soup with a potato masher to give you your desired consistency. Whisk in the milk and the cream. Heat through until hot, again over medium heat, about 5 minutes.
Serve hot with your favorite soup side. Crackers, bread, biscuits, rolls, etc. I enjoyed mine with buttered homemade cheddar cheese bread and a healthy grinding of black pepper on top!
I only mashed my vegetables up coarsely. I like a bit of texture in my soup. You could also use an immersion blender and blitz it, but like I said, I wanted texture.
I used a can of mixed vegetables which had corn, carrots and green beans in it. You could cook your vegetables from scratch and use those, or use any leftover cooked vegetable that you have in the refrigerator. You could also add cooked pasta or rice to make it even heartier!
Never having been to Dolly's Dixie Stampede and eaten the soup there, I cannot say for sure if this tastes like the original or not. What I can tell you is that it was very simple and easy to make and it was delicious!
I enjoyed a nice hot bowl of it for my lunch along with a slice of buttered homemade Cheddar Cheese Bread and I was in soup and bread heaven! Cornbread would also be very nice with this as would a tasty buttermilk biscuit!
You can't beat a hot bowl of soup on a cold winter's day for comfort. Here are some other favorites of mine that are equally as simple to make!
QUICK AND EASY TOMATO BISQUE - Richer than regular tomato soup and a lot thicker, this makes for a deliciously hearty meal option. It is a great quick & easy soup to serve with grilled cheese sandwiches. I love to top it with croutons and a sprinkling of shredded cheddar cheese.
SIMPLE SCOTTISH TATTIE SOUP - This recipe is a huge testimony to Scottish thrift and their ability to make something incredibly tasty out of next to nothing. This is one very delicious pot of soup! Its also very economical, quick and easy to make!

13 Survival Foods You Should Always Have at Home
by ASHLEY HETRICK
February 23, 2018
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...print-icon.jpg
Most of us have heard that the average American has less than 3 days worth of food at home. That means we’re only 72 hours away from a food riot should supply lines be disrupted. Even if you don’t have the money on hand to invest in food storage, there are certain foods you should always keep on hand to form the basis of your survival meals.
Baby Formulahttp://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...by-formula.jpg
Really? Even if you don’t have babies? Yes!
Baby formula is designed to be everything a body needs to survive. Infants live exclusively on formula. No water. No solid food. Nothing else.
Powdered infant formula tastes a whole lot better than powdered milk, and it’s better for you. Dried and sealed, infant formula lasts for years.
Related: How To Choose, Use & Store Protein Powder for Preppers
Beyond that, if you’re planning to survive for the long haul, you never know when there may be an infant that needs tending. While breastfeeding is an obvious solution, there are many reasons why that might not be possible.
If you’re storing formula powder, make sure you use clean or sterilized water to reconstitute it.
If you’re adamantly against baby formula for whatever reason, consider protein powder. It wont help you feed infants, but it’s nearly as versatile when it comes to feeding adults and older children.
White Flourhttp://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...hite-flour.jpg
White flour lasts for a year, and has a surprising amount of protein. While historically, people living on a mostly white flour diet had trouble with nutritional deficiencies, modern flour has vitamins and minerals added to it.
Related: How to Make Acorn Flour
With a little know how, all you need is white flour, water and salt to make good bread using wild yeast.
Coconut Oilhttp://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...oconut-oil.jpg
Along with white flour, a ready source of fat will go a long way to boost moods and fill stomachs. Coconut oil has a long shelf life, and manufacturers say it should be good as the day it was bought for 2 years. Practically speaking, it’s good much longer than that, and you likely wont notice a difference if you’re eating 5 year old coconut oil that’s been properly stored.
Unlike many other types of oil, coconut oil has the added benefit that it’s tasty even if you don’t have facilities for cooking. Mash in a bit of sugar and coco powder and you’ve got yourself coconut oil truffles for comfort food and a ready source of energy, no cooking required.
Salthttp://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...18/02/salt.jpg
Salt is often touted as a survival food, but in reality you don’t actually need to eat much salt to survive. Very small amounts will keep you healthy, and you’ll need to learn to adjust from our modern salt heavy diet.
The real reason to keep salt is for food preservation. If you happen to be lucky enough to acquire fresh meat, salt is the only thing you need to keep it from spoiling. Charcuterie is the art of preserving every part of the animal with little more than salt and technique, and transforming it into something spectacular in the process.
Before you find yourself in a survival situation, learning the basics of preserving meat without refrigeration could mean the difference between surviving and thriving.
In a pinch, cover the meat in salt. A lot of salt. Cover it completely and keep it covered. It may not quite be the same as prosciutto, but it wont spoil.
Home-Canned Fruits, Vegetables & Meatshttp://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...bles-Meats.jpg
You’ll notice I say “home canned” rather than purchased. Why?
Because once you open up a can of home canned hamburger, pasta sauce or potatoes, you still have something very valuable: a canning jar.
Beyond that, if you canned them yourself you also have the knowledge to do it again. Store bought canned food will get you through the short term emergency, but the knowledge and equipment to refill those jars will carry you through the long haul.
If you’re going to spend money buying food, my personal preference would be dried fruit and meat. Dried fruits and meats are light and portable, and keeping a store of water and dried fruits is much more versatile than a store of canned foods.
Beyond that, in a cold climate, canned foods may freeze and blow their seals unless keeping the storage room climate controlled. I’d rather focus on keeping my family warm than having to worry about keeping the food at a good temperature at the same time.
Canned food is handy in many situations, because it’s instant. You can open up a can and eat it as is with no preparation. That convenience alone is worth keeping canned food around. But for the best use of my dollar, if I’m going to store canned food, it’s canned food that I’ve put up myself at little cost. Also, here are 14 must-have canned foods you didn’t know existed.
Dried Fruits and Meathttp://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...ied-fruits.jpg
As I’ve said, dried fruits and meats are versatile. They can be eaten out of hand or boiled along with other foods into a stew if you have cooking facilities. They’re light and travel well in an emergency.
Dried fruits in particular will help keep your digestive system healthy in a crisis. If your diet is otherwise nothing more than white flour and emergency survival foods, having raisins or prunes around to keep things moving along will make everyone a lot happier and healthier.
Related: 7 Super Cheap Foods To Stockpile That People Usually Throw Away
Peanut Butterhttp://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...nut-butter.jpg
Not only is peanut butter a comfort food, it’s also full of protein and healthy fats that will keep you satisfied long after a meal. It can be eaten right out of the container for a quick energy boost, and fully sealed containers last for years on the shelf.
Vitaminshttp://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...2/vitamins.jpg
Nutritional deficiency can destroy your health. In lean times, our ancestors had to contend with not only feeding themselves, but ensuring a balanced enough diet to prevent debilitating deficiencies.
A single cheap bottle of multi-vitamins can balance out nutritional gaps, and allow you to focus on calories rather than vitamin content. Most vitamin brands have way more than the recommended daily amount of most key vitamins, so even a single vitamin per week per person can mean a dramatic improvement to their health.
Granolahttp://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...02/granola.jpg
There are a lot of shelf stable snack foods. Why go with granola?
It’s high calorie, with roughly 700 calories per cup, and at the same time it’s nutritionally balanced. The mix of whole grains, nuts and sugars mean that granola is a complete meal that you can eat while on the move.
Granola also has a long shelf life, and it’s light and portable.
Dry Beans & Ricehttp://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...s-and-rice.jpg
I’m calling this a single item, because you should always keep both beans AND rice. Together they form a complete protein and the contents of a 5 gallon food storage bucket can feed you for a month for about $20. Assuming you have the fuel to cook, there’s no better way to store calories and nutrition than a balance of beans and rice.
Sugarhttp://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conten...8/02/sugar.jpg
With a grocery store just around the corner, sugar is cheap and readily available. For now. In an emergency, sugar is a excellent source of energy and it’ll be scarce without global trade.
Sugar can also be used in food preservation, which will expand your foraging options.

Mention caffeine and the first thing that often comes to mind is a cup of coffee. Often, a cup of joe is enjoyed in the morning. However, caffeine does so much more than keeping one awake – and here are some of its other health benefits.Caffeine contributes to pain relief
A brief literature review published March 2016 in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine found that caffeine helps address migraine when used as an adjuvant treatment. The paper's authors noted that caffeine acts on adenosine receptors that are involved in pain sensations, and the substance is present in some over-the-counter (OTC) pain medications. It noted that caffeine possesses potential to address hypnic headache and postdural puncture headache. (Related: 5 Caffeine FACTS and 5 caffeine MYTHS.)
Caffeine helps promote urination
According to a 2010 study published in Urology Annals, caffeine is a diuretic – something that promotes increased urination and excretion of waste materials in the body. The paper stated that caffeine at 4.5 mg/kg prompted increased urination, leading its authors to note that the substance can "promote early urgency and frequency of urination." However, they warned that those with symptoms of lower urinary tract disease should be cautious when consuming foods with caffeine – if not avoiding them altogether.
Caffeine affects blood vessels differently, depending on their location
A 2017 piece by Dr. Omar Haqqani of Vascular Health Clinics in Michigan explained that caffeine affects blood vessels differently, depending on where they are located.

Caffeine causes the blood vessels in the head and neck to narrow, which helps in headaches. The rush of blood to the brain causes swelling and pressure, with the pressure translating to the pain caused by a headache. Caffeine's vasoconstrictive relieves pressure and eliminates the pain.
Meanwhile, blood vessels in other parts of the body benefit from caffeine as it widens them. This allows greater blood flow, particularly in the muscles and the lungs. This vasodilative effect of caffeine results in increased muscle performance and improves breathing.
Potential negative effects of caffeine
Caffeine occurs naturally in more than 60 plants, with coffee beans being the most ubiquitous source. But aside from coffee beans, caffeine is also present in cacao pods used to make chocolate products and kola nuts used to flavor some soft drinks, not to mention tea leaves.
Synthetic caffeine also exists, and is often used as an additive to some food items and medicines. Pain relievers, cold medicines, OTC medicines for alertness, "energy-boosting" candies and energy drinks make use of synthetic caffeine at times.
However, caffeine also has negative effects on the cardiovascular system – most especially when consumed in large amounts. Excessive caffeine consumption can cause anxiety and difficulty sleeping. It is also possible to develop caffeine tolerance; this means that larger and larger amounts are needed to achieve the same effect.
Caffeine can also raise the heart rate and trigger palpitations, due to its effect on the adrenal glands that produce the stress hormone adrenaline. When faced with danger or fear, adrenaline is produced in preparation for the body's fight or flight response. This results in increased breathing and heart rates.
These caffeine-triggered adrenaline releases – particularly large amounts of it for long periods – can weaken the heart muscle and increase the risk of a heart attack over time. Those with diabetes are susceptible to this. Moreover, excess caffeine can cause high-blood pressure or make it worse in some that already experience it.
Regular use of more than 600 mg of caffeine might cause the short-term effects listed above. Long-term effects at this level may include chronic insomnia; constant anxiety; depression; gastrointestinal issues; headaches; irritability; jitteriness; muscle tremors; restlessness; sleep problems and possible cardiac issues. Therefore, enjoy -- in moderation.

Whoever thought a hot cup of joe could help address Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) infection? Indeed, two studies have shown the power of coffee against this pathogen.
The first study published in Cell & Bioscience last November found that drinking approximately one to two cups of coffee daily is enough to inhibit COVID-19 infections caused by different strains of SARS-CoV-2. In particular, it found that the consumption of coffee addressed infections caused by the original SARS-CoV-2 strain and its subsequent variants – the B117 alpha strain, the B16172 delta strain and the B11529 omicron strain.
The study authors from Taiwan examined coffee's ability to fight off COVID-19 infection by purchasing three kinds of coffee – ground, instant and decaffeinated – from supermarkets. They discovered that all the coffee types they scrutinized possess the ability to inhibit viral infection in cells.
The study authors also found that adding milk or sugar does not impact coffee's antiviral properties. Even decaffeinated coffee "still has the capability to interrupt SARS-CoV-2 infection, which is important to know for caffeine-sensitive populations." Moreover, they mentioned in their paper that "the optimal timeline for coffee to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection is within six hours" after drinking. (Related: Adding milk to coffee can help fight inflammation, suggests study.)
According to the researchers, there are two ways coffee protects human cells against SARS-CoV-2 infection. First, compounds in coffee inhibit the spike protein's ability to bind with human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in human cells. Second, they reduce the activity of transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2) and cathepsin L (CTSL).
"Taken together, drinking one to two cups of coffee as well as decaffeinated coffee daily can potentially reduce SARS-CoV-2 infection – including wild-type, alpha, delta and omicron variants," the researchers concluded.
Same antiviral properties also present in coffee leaves
Another study by the same research team from Taiwan focused on the ability of Coffea arabica leaves to address SARS-CoV-2 infection. Their earlier study published in July 2022 in the International Journal of Biological Sciences found that C. arabica leaves can inhibit the entry of the pathogen behind COVID-19 and its various strains into human cells.
This is because C. arabica leaf extracts have several phytochemicals that are also present in coffee beans. These include chlorogenic acid, caffeine, quinic acid and mangiferin. They inhibit infection by preventing the viral spike protein from binding with ACE2 receptors in human cells and reducing the activity of TMPRSS2.
During an appearance on the Taiwanese program "Health 1+1", professor emeritus Jin-Jian Zhang of the National Taiwanese University's College of Medicine expounded on the benefits of coffee. The professor with years of research experience in coffee under his belt said daily coffee consumption can alleviate inflammation, enhance immunity, and reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
According to Zhang, coffee's association with longevity is linked to the various bioactive compounds present in it – the same compounds that contribute to its antiviral properties. These compounds such as chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, trigonelline, cafestol and melanoidins form during the roasting process, and exhibit antioxidant properties to some extent.
The professor also pointed out that coffee can help address depression, citing two mechanisms. First, coffee can increase the population of beneficial bacteria in the gut – with higher populations of good bacteria contributing to improved sleep quality. Second, the aroma of coffee beans can trigger the release of feel-good hormones in the body – enhancing overall happiness in turn.
Zhang shared that he consumes coffee with added milk, mainly to mitigate its potential effects on the digestive system. However, newer research has found that coffee with added milk offers greater benefits as the cysteine in milk combines with coffee's polyphenols, enhancing the drink's anti-inflammatory activity.
However, the professor advised against adding non-dairy creamer or sugar to coffee. Non-dairy creamer mainly contains trans fats that aren't good for the body, while sugar may contribute unnecessary calories.

The Best Long-Lasting Protein Sources for a Crisis
https://mpg56.files.wordpress.com/20...tled.png?w=596Planning a survival stockpile can be a financial and logistical nightmare. It doesn’t take long before we realize that building that stockpile is going to be an expensive proposition. Regardless of how carefully we try to budget, it is challenging to make it work.
For many, the financial burden of building a stockpile forces them to seek out ways of reducing their financial outlay at any cost. Unfortunately, that cost might just end up being their health, especially if they don’t stockpile the right things.
More than anything, what I see people trying to do, in order to save money, is stock up on carbohydrates, while cutting back on proteins. But both are equally important to a survival diet.
When nutritionists talk about “proper diet”, we usually hear them talking about micronutrients, things like Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Basically, things the rest of us don’t really understand. Listening to them, you might think that those micronutrients are all we need, that there is no need for macronutrients. But a survival diet has to focus on the macronutrients, even if we ignore the micronutrients.
There are three macronutrients. We need to understand what they are and what they do, in order to put a realistic survival diet together. These three nutrients are:
#1. Carbohydrates (carbs)
Simple sugars are the fuel that our bodies run on, providing the necessary energy for our body’s muscles to move.
We get those simple sugars from the carbs and complex sugars that we eat (white sugar is a complex sugar).
Digestion starts in the mouth, with our teeth breaking food up and our saliva attacking those carbs and breaking them down to simple sugars. A survival diet should be 50% to 60% carbohydrates.
#2. Fats
The problem with carbohydrates is that they break down into those simple sugars quickly. Therefore are consumed quickly.
Once that happens, the individual “hits the wall” and is suddenly without energy. That’s where fats come in. They too are broken down into simple sugars, but it takes much longer than it does for carbs.
So, when the sugars from the carbs run out, the sugars from the fats take over. This gives us a one-two punch of energy. A survival diet should contain somewhere between 25% to 35% fats, mostly unsaturated fats (vegetable fats).
#3. Proteins
Of the three macronutrients, proteins are the only one we eat for a purpose other than providing energy.
While it is possible for proteins to be broken down into simple sugars, the process is much more complex, so the body only does it in emergencies.
Rather, proteins are the basic building-blocks of life, as all cells are made up out of proteins. Even DNA, the genetic code, is made up of proteins. Since the body is constantly making new cells, it needs a constant source of proteins. If it doesn’t have it, it will cannibalize itself to get those proteins. A survival diet should contain from 10% to 20% proteins.
Selecting Your Proteins
There are two problems with proteins, from the viewpoint of building a survival stockpile. The first is that they are generally the most expensive food we buy and the second is that they are the hardest foods to preserve.
Meat, where most of our proteins come from, naturally has a higher bacterial count than any other food source. That bacteria must be killed, for the meat to successfully be preserved.
Nevertheless, these are problems that we must overcome, in order to have a healthy survival diet. Fortunately, there are many methods which have been successfully used for preserving meat for centuries, all of which are available for us today.
There are also sources of protein available to us, other than animal proteins. By mixing our stockpile so that we have both animal proteins and other food sources which contain protein, we can build a stockpile that we can afford, while providing us with the nutrition that our bodies need.
Homemade Jerky
Jerky is nothing more than spiced, dried meat. But the most important part of that jerky, besides the meat itself, is salt.
Salt is a natural preservative, and absolutely essential to making jerky safe for storage.
Making your own saves you money and gives you the opportunity to make sure that it has ample salt, so as to protect the meat. Excess salt can always be rinsed off, before use.
You also want to store homemade jerky in airtight containers, with oxygen and moisture absorbers added. The containers need to be strong enough to make it impossible for rats to chew through them and get to the meat stored inside.
Salt Fish
Salt fish is kind of the fish equivalent of jerky, made in much the same way and with a large amount of salt. If anything, salt fish has more salt used in making it, than jerky does. This preserves it well. As with jerky, you’ll probably need to make your own.
Canned Meats
Canned meat is generally cheaper than fresh cuts of meat.
One of the reasons for this, is that canned meat is usually made from muscles of the animal which are tough and are therefore not usable for steaks and roasts.
The canning process provides ample opportunity to tenderize this meat and make it edible.
As with any other canned product, canned meats will last virtually forever. While they may not look very attractive when they come out of the can, they are nutritious and healthy to eat. Having your meat in cans also acts as portion control, helping you to ration out your food and make it last longer.
TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein)
Textured vegetable protein is a meat substitute, made purely out of plant products, mostly soy. It is made to take on the texture and flavor of different types of meat.
While it is not exactly the same texture or flavor, most people won’t recognize the difference in a casserole or other dish, if they are not told.
Beans
Beans have long been used as a source of protein. All sorts of legumes can be eaten, supplementing the protein received from animals. In many poorer cultures today, beans are the main source of protein, due to cost, rather than meat.
The nice thing about beans is that they are sold already dried, making it extremely easy to package them for long-term storage.
As with any other dry food, the major problem is packing them in airtight packaging, with oxygen absorbers and in a container which is strong enough to keep rodents out. That can be done by putting them in aluminized Mylar bags, inside of five-gallon buckets. Stored this way, they will keep for at least 20 years.
Nuts
Nuts have also been used as a survival protein source for centuries. In the early days of the American colonies, it was not uncommon to bury barrels and casks of nuts to preserve them for winter or other hard times. Most nuts keep well, in the shell, as long as rodents can be kept away from them.
All types of nuts can be turned into butters, not just peanut butter. They all provide a considerable amount of protein, in addition to being a comfort food.
Cheese
While cheese is harder to store for prolonged periods of time, it is possible. Actually, the making of cheese came from a desire to convert milk into storable products. Properly stored, cheese can actually last a considerable amount of time. Even when mold grows on it, the moldy edge of the cheese can be cut off, leaving perfectly good cheese for you to eat.
To preserve cheese for a prolonged period of time, triple dip it in wax (paraffin), allowing it to harden between each dipping. Check each dipping carefully, seeking for any pinholes in it, which might flow through. These must be sealed to help ensure that the cheese will keep.
Amaranth
Grains aren’t normally thought of as a good source of protein, but amaranth defies that definition. This amazing grain has 26 grams of protein per cup, the highest of any grain. It is the only grain which is considered a complete protein source, because it contains all of the essential amino acids.
Meat Products to Avoid
Sometimes, it’s not just what you do that matters, but what you don’t do. Some protein sources, especially animal proteins, may not keep for prolonged periods of time, even though they are supposedly “preserved”. You have to watch out for them.
Most of what we know as deli meats or cold cuts originated as “cured meats”. They were a way of taking meat from the animal, which may not otherwise be used, and turning it into usable meat, through the process of curing.
In addition to being preserved by curing, the process also serves to tenderize these meats.
The problem today though, is that what are sold as cured meats or cold cuts, aren’t cured in the same way as olden times. So they are not properly preserved and will not last for a prolonged period of time, unless you can them, in addition to being cured.
The other meat preserving process which is not done like in the olden days, is smoking. What is sold as “smoked meat” today is cold smoked to give it the smoke flavor. But it is not preserved. That requires hot smoking. So, unless you are going to hot smoke your own meats, don’t stockpile smoked meats. Even then, your hot smoked meats will not last as long as meats which are canned or made into jerky.
A Final Note About Fish
Of all the sources of food in the wild, the most abundant is fish. I don’t care where you go, you’re going to need water, and if you find water, there’s a really good chance that there will be fish swimming in it. You should always be ready to harvest those fish, providing yourself with not only food, but specifically with animal protein.
I was surprised to find out that of all the types of animal protein eaten in the world today, fish is the most common. I was expecting it to be chicken. But fish beats chicken by far. Part of that is the ready abundance of fish in the world’s oceans, providing food to us, virtually for free.
Your survival plan should include some means of harvesting whatever fish are available, wherever you are, and making them part of your diet. This means more than just having two little hooks, a bit of line and two lone weights. You need enough fishing gear to keep you fed for the long run, even considering the amount of fishing gear that often goes over the side and is lost forever.
