Toyota recalls 600,000 mini-vans over corrosion on spare-tire cable

Toyota says it is recalling 600,000 Sienna mini-vans because of corrosion on the cable holding the spare-tire carrier. The problem has surfaced on vehicles in cold climates with heavy use of road salt.

The recall covers 1998 through 2010 model years. The automaker write in its news release that "prolonged exposure" to road salts may cause "excessive corrosion" of the cable. "In the worst case," the company says, cable may fail and the spare tire could "become separated from the vehicle." That creates "a road hazard for following vehicles" and could cause a crash.

Toyota said it's working on a remedy. Until then, owners will receive customers "an interim notice" telling to take their vehicles to a dealership for an inspection.
