WASHINGTON, June 23 -- Rep. Dean Heller, R-Nev. (2nd CD), issued the following news release:

Today U.S. Congressman Dean Heller (R-NV) submitted two amendments to House Rules Committee to bolster the E-Verify program in the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2010 (H.R. 2892).

The first amendment would require any entity contracting with the federal government to use E-Verify as a condition to receive federal funds.

The second amendment would extend the program from two to three years in accordance with the Administration's budget. "In order to help curb the flow of illegal immigrants businesses must have the tools to determine the status of their employees.

The E-Verify program has the potential to allow every business in our country to hire only those who have come to the United States legally.

Moreover, my amendments would ensure that taxpayer's money does not go to employ illegal immigrants. This program is an important step towards reigning in illegal immigration in our country," said Heller.

E-Verify is an employment verification tool that allows participating employers to check immigration and citizenship records to determine whether their employees are of legal status.

The primary goal of an employment eligibility verification system is to ensure that individuals holding jobs are authorized to work in the United States.
