HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Four people have been charged in connection with the shooting of a Harris County sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop last week.

Kendell Davis, 22, and Juan Frank Ybarra are both charged with attempted capital murder of a peace officer. Brianna Garza and Richard Rodriguez are both charged with evading arrest/detention. All suspects have been arrested.

On Sept. 2, authorities say Deputy Alan Whitlock was conducting a traffic stop on a late model Cadillac that was occupied by four individuals. The vehicle turned on to a darkened street and slowed down, when deputies say Davis, sitting in the rear driver side, leaned from the rear window and produced an assault rifle and fired at the Deputy Whitlock's vehicle several times. The rounds struck the front of the vehicle, and one round went through the windshield and struck Deputy Whitlock in the center of his Trauma plate of his ballistic resistant vest.

Deputy Whitlock called out via his radio for an assist the deputy, and additional units responded. The vehicle fled the scene, and was found several blocks away abandoned.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office says the ceramic plate is credited in saving Deputy Whitlock's life.
