Pair Attacked by Tiger File Claim

Pair Attacked by Tiger File Claim

    Friday, March 28, 2008 3:29 PM

SAN FRANCISCO -- Two brothers who were attacked by an escaped tiger at the San Francisco Zoo have filed claims against the city alleging negligence and defamation.

Attorney Mark Geragos submitted papers on behalf of Kulbir (kool-'BEER) and Paul Dhaliwal (DAW'-lee-wahl) seeking monetary compensation for "serious physical and emotional injuries" this week. The claims are a prerequisite for filing a civil lawsuit.

The documents allege the city and the San Francisco Zoological Society failed in their duty to provide a safe zoo environment, defamed the brothers by spreading lies about their possible role in provoking the attack and improperly impounded Kulbir Dhaliwal's car.

Pair attacked by tiger file claim

SAN LEANDRO — One of the two brothers who were seriously injured in the Christmas Day tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of trying to steal a pair of Nintendo Wii controllers from Target, police said.
At about 6:30 p.m., San Jose resident Amritpal Dhaliwal, 19, was shopping at the Bayfair Center store when security noticed he had stuffed the items inside his pants.

"He walked past all the registers, never attempted to pay for the concealed items and walked outside of the store," said San Leandro Police Lt. Tom Overton. "Target security stopped him outside the store and put him under citizen arrest for theft."

Dhaliwal was booked for petty theft and was released at 2:50 a.m. today after posting $1,500 bail.

The Nintendo Wii is a popular video game system, and a controller for the system sells for a retail price of $40.

Scars from the tiger attack could still be seen on Dhaliwal's forehead, Overton said.

On Dec. 25, Dhaliwal's friend, 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr. of San Jose, was fatally mauled by Tatiana, a Siberian tiger that escaped her enclosure as the zoo was closing.

Dhaliwal and his brother, Kulbir Dhaliwal, 23, also suffered injuries in the attack.

The tiger was subsequently euthanized by San Francisco police.

Zoo officials have said they believe the tiger was somehow provoked out of her enclosure, but inspections found that regardless of provocation, the wall to the enclosure was shorter than the required height.
