Authorities say a 2-year-old boy who fell off a cliff and died at Chimney Rock State Park apparently pulled away from his mother and ran under a railing.

Division of Parks and Recreation spokesman Charlie Peek told The Charlotte Observer that the mother was holding her child's hand, walking between him and the railing, just before he fell Saturday morning.

Authorities say Giovani Chavez fell about 100 feet from a boardwalk on the Skyline Trail to another trail below. His family is from Spartanburg, S.C.

Trail maps at the park advise parents not to bring small children on the Skyline Trail because of the steep cliffs.

Peek says authorities want to interview family members again. They do not speak English.
