Pelosi: Trace Mosque Opponents' Money Trail

Wednesday, 18 Aug 2010 12:43 PM

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi believes that groups opposing the ground zero mosque should be investigated and that the decision should be a local New York matter.

And, while some mosque opponents want to know who’s funding the project to see decipher whether the money trail leads to radical Islam ties, the California Democrat told California radio station KCBS that she believes the opponents’ funding should be checked, according to a political blog report in The Washington Post.

Her comments, especially her opinion that it’s a local matter, revealed the increasingly fractious debate within even the Democratic Party. As President Obama weighed with the contention that the proponents have a constitutional right to build the mosque near ground zero, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid split with the president and said it should be built elsewhere.

Making it clear that she’s targeting opponents, she said, "There is no question that there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some, and I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded? How is this being ginned up?" the Post reported.

Some Republicans have made the mosque a campaign issue, although some, such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, have cautioned not to go overboard in making it a political football.
