TSA to Block "Controversial Opinion" on the Web

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is blocking certain websites from the federal agency's computers, including halting access by staffers to any Internet pages that contain a "controversial opinion," according to an internal email obtained by CBS News.

The email was sent to all TSA employees from the Office of Information Technology on Friday afternoon.

It states that as of July 1, TSA employees will no longer be allowed to access five categories of websites that have been deemed "inappropriate for government access."

    The categories include:

    • Chat/Messaging

    • Controversial opinion

    • Criminal activity

    • Extreme violence (including cartoon violence) and gruesome content

    • Gaming

The email does not specify how the TSA will determine if a website expresses a "controversial opinion."

There is also no explanation as to why controversial opinions are being blocked, although the email stated that some of the restricted websites violate the Employee Responsibilities and Conduct policy.

The TSA did not return calls seeking comment by publication time.

This means they are going to cut off all Federal employees from websites that carry views and opinions contrary to the current regime in DC.

I see this not as censorship but the fed not allowing employees paid by our tax dollars to use computers paid for by our tax dollars to play games read personal news stories, visit chatrooms, (sorry to see there wasn't a ban on porn sites though), and use fed computers and fed Inet access for personal business. I see this ban as making fed employees work instead of playing on the computer.

I worked for the TSA in its early days and I can tell you that back then the basic screeners and front line supervisors didn't have much access to computers with internet connections much less time to surf the web. Things may have changed but it looks to me like this is directed to their management and administrative people.

They won't define it. They will just start building a shit list of websites to filter out. Then they will slap that heading over it.
They will likely use the same filter to then block our troops from accessing sites like ALIPAC as well.

I don't understand why they just don't impliment a 'no web surfing' policy. It would have been less contriversial for them, I think, instead of drawing attention to themselves.

With the way the government is attacking the internet, I can see this as a precursor for things to come.
