Rep. Massa Alleges Emanuel Forced Resignation Over Healthcare Vote

    Monday, 08 Mar 2010 01:37 PM

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — New York Rep. Eric Massa is blaming his resignation on a conspiracy led by White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and House Democratic leaders to force him out before a crucial vote on healthcare.

Massa was one of 39 Democrats who voted against an earlier House version of the healthcare bill in November. Democratic leaders will "stop at nothing" to advance the healthcare overhaul, he said.

He also had some choice words for Emanuel during a recent radio interview in which he called the top Obama adviser "the son of the devil's spawn."

"He is an individual who would sell his mother to get a vote. He would strap his children to the front end of a steam locomotive," Massa said of Emanuel's desire to lock up vital votes on healthcare reform.

"You think that somehow they didn't come after me to get rid of me because my vote is the deciding vote in the healthcare bill? Then, ladies and gentlemen, you live today in a world that is so innocent as to not understand what's going on in Washington, D.C."

Massa spoke Sunday night on his weekly radio show on WKPQ-FM in Hornell, N.Y.

Facing a harassment complaint from a staffer, Massa said last week he's stepping down from his seat Monday. He earlier announced he wouldn't seek re-election because of health problems.

He said he learned he was the subject of an ethics complaint by a male staffer who felt "uncomfortable" during an exchange with Massa. The exchange reportedly had sexual overtones.

In his account, Massa said he and Emanuel have had many tense confrontations during the past year, including one incident in the shower of the Congressional gym.

"Let me tell you a story about Rahm Emanuel," Massa continued. "I was a congressman in my first eight weeks, and I was in the congressional gym, and I went down and I worked out and I went into the showers...I'm sitting there showering, naked as a jaybird and here comes Rahm Emanuel not even with a towel wrapped around his tush, poking his finger in my chest, yelling at me because I wasn't going to vote for the president's budget. Do you know how awkward it is to have a political argument with a naked man?

"By the way, what the heck is he doing in the Congressional gym," Massa continued. "He goes there to intimidate members of Congress... He's hated me since day one, and now he wins."

In the same interview on WKPQ radio, Massa accuses Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of lying about the time line of the ethics inquiry, and more broadly of a conspiracy against him by House Democratic leaders to force him out ahead of a critical vote on healthcare.

According to the following Wikipedia biography, Rep. Eric Massa, a former career Naval officer and Republican, became a Democrat because he opposed the Iraq War and unrestricted Free Trade. He campaigned in N.H. for Gen. Wesley Clark, under whom he had served, during the 2006 Presidential campaign. So evidently Rep. Massa has an established history of charting his own course and acting from his own principles.

    Biography

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of a career naval officer, Massa grew up in various locations, including Argentina and New Orleans. Massa graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1981 and went on to serve in the Navy for 24 years. He qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer on the USS New Jersey (BB-62), and eventually served as aide to former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, General Wesley Clark. Near the end of his Navy career he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, from which he later recovered. A former Republican, he left his party over the issue of the Iraq War and campaigned in New Hampshire during the unsuccessful presidential bid of his former boss, Wesley Clark.

During the 2006 campaign, Massa positioned himself as strongly opposed to the Iraq war and unrestricted free trade, favoring instead fair trade. Other issues in his platform included expanding farm aid programs, as well as bringing homeland security money to the 29th District. Massa is also active in Band of Brothers/Veterans for a Secure America whose goal is to help veterans who are running for Congress as Democrats. He also supported a system for universal health care.

Massa has recently worked as a business consultant for Strategic Insight, a defense consulting firm in Alexandria, Virginia. Massa, during a press conference in June, 2007, stated that he "curtailed all other activities in April (2007) when he became an active candidate".

Massa lives in Corning, New York with his wife Beverly, daughter Alexandra and son Justin. His eldest son Richard lives in California.

Massa was listed in the 2007 Esquire 100.[5]

One has to wonder if this resignation flap is a cross between truth-or- Consequences and a resulting psychotic break. At the very least, I suspect there is more to this story than meets the eye. The comments over "the showdown in the shower" does not do anything to improve Messa's image. Where is he going with this?

Massa to Appear on Glenn Beck as Story Rocks Nation
    Tuesday, 09 Mar 2010 12:33 PM

Just a day after triggering a political firestorm with accusations he was forced out of office because he rebelled against his fellow House Democrats’ healthcare plan, former New York Rep. Eric J.J. Massa will take his story to "The Glenn Beck Program" on Fox News tonight.

Beck said Monday he will devote a full-hour to an interview with Massa. The show airs at 5 p.m. EST and 2 a.m. on the Fox News Channel.

"I'm not saying he's, you know, pure as a driven snow. I don't know. I don't know the guy," Beck said of Massa in a video clip from Fox News. "But this is a moment that will decide the course of this nation, possibly."

Editor's Note: See Glenn Beck discuss the Massa case below

Beck said he called Massa at his home and spoke with him off-air shortly after he left office Monday, according to the Buffalo News.

Massa, who is facing a harassment complaint from a male staffer who said the lawmaker made lewd advances toward him at a wedding party, said Sunday that Democratic leaders will "stop at nothing" to advance the health care bill. Massa voted against the legislation last year.

Massa has given three explanations for leaving office. Last week, he said he would not seek re-election because of health problems.

Massa was one of 39 Democrats who voted against an earlier House version of the healthcare bill in November. His departure reduces the majority House Speaker Nancy Pelosi needs for passage of health care legislation to 216.

Massa was the talk of Washington Monday after he made allegations Sunday on a Hornell, New York radio station that he was "set up" to fall so that House Democrats would have an easier path to passing health care reform.

"Mine is now the deciding vote on the health care bill," said Massa, who consistently has opposed the Democratic health plan. "And this administration and this House leadership have said — quote, unquote — they will stop at nothing to pass this health care bill. And now they've gotten rid of me, and it will pass. You connect the dots."

Massa singled out White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel for his ouster. The two had been known to have had frequent skirmishes over healthcare and other issues over the last year.

He called the top Obama adviser "the son of the devil's spawn."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, on ABC's "Good Morning America" today, said of Massa's charges: "I think this whole story is ridiculous. I think the latest excuse is silly and ridiculous."

Massa also accused House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of "lying" in a statement in which the majority leader's office said Hoyer would have contacted the ethics committee about the allegations against Massa if Massa's staff had not done so itself.

A spokeswoman for Hoyer, D-Md., Katie Grant, vehemently denied Massa's claim.

    "That's completely false," Grant said.

Massa was the second Democrat in a week to be hit by damaging ethics questions, and his departure is a further embarrassment for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who had pledged to create "the most honest, most open and most ethical Congress in history."

Republicans have ridiculed Pelosi over this week's ethics revelations, saying the behavior of Democrats had made a mockery of her promise to clean up Congress.
