Cereso prison official, his bodyguard slain

EL PASO -- The director of the Cereso prison in Juárez and a bodyguard were shot and killed Thursday as the violence that has taken hold of the city continues.

Officials said Salvador Barreno Chávez, 66, and his bodyguard, Jorge Aguero Hernandez, 27, were found dead in a car near Juan Gabriel Street and Zaragoza Boulevard about 4:25 p.m. Police found 60 bullet casings near the scene.

Barreno Chávez took over the prison in November after a deadly riot there. The riot was sparked by a clash between the rival Aztecas and Mexicles gangs.

No arrests have been made, officials said. More than 600 homicides have been reported in the city so far this year, some of them tied to warring drug cartels.
