House Speaker John Boehner called President Obama Friday to inform him that he is pulling out of talk with him on raising the nation's legal limit to borrow money.

Boehner sent a letter to lawmakers saying, "we couldn't connect."

"For these reasons, I have decided to end discussions with the White House and begin conversations with the leaders of the Senate in an effort to find a path forward," he wrote.

According to a GOP leadership aide, the sides were moving forward toward a total package that would cut $3 trillion to 3.5 trillion over a decade. It would have included an incremental increase in the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling now and force another one late next winter.

Fox News' Chad Pergram contributed to this report.

    The Quote of the Decade

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government can not pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, “the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.â€

    1. Why has President Obama refused to CUT GOVERNMENT Spending? He falsely accuses the TEA Party organizations who are NOT elected to any office as refusing to compromise, because Obama needs someone to demonize! Everyone else but ME is to blame!

    2. Why are President Obama & Democrats NOT putting legislation on the table with specific facts? No Federal Budget in TWO YEARS! How irresponsible is that?

    3. Why is “taxingâ€
